Chapter 7 - The Easter LedgerWe returned to a secure facility before sunset.

Emily was finally asleep.

I sat alone in a concrete room with the steel case on the table.

I opened it.

Inside:

The satellite phone.

The authorization card.

Three old photographs.

A handwritten list.

And a small brass key.

I stared at it.

I'd carried that key for fifteen years.

I'd never known what it opened.

Claire entered.

She closed the door.

“Did you find it?”

I placed the key on the table.

“This?”

She nodded.

“The archive key.”

“Where's the lock?”

“Inside your house.”

I stared.

“My house?”

Claire smiled.

“You've been living above it.”

My pulse jumped.

“What are you talking about?”

“The key opens a compartment beneath your foundation.”

I remembered the old basement.

The one I had never renovated.

A section of concrete near the furnace.

I had always thought it was part of the original construction.

Claire spoke quietly.

“They knew you would abandon your old life.”

“So they left the evidence where you would eventually hide from the world.”

I drove home with two agents.

The basement was exactly as I remembered it.

Gray concrete.

Old pipes.

Dust.

I measured the wall.

Nothing.

Then I noticed a line in the floor.

Barely visible.

I scraped away years of grime.

A metal plate appeared.

The brass key fit perfectly.

Click.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a ledger.

Black leather.

Handwritten pages.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Witnesses.

Judges.

Doctors.

Police officers.

Politicians.

Corporate executives.

Everything.

Claire's face went pale.

“This is it.”

The final page had a list of names.

At the bottom was one line:

COLLINS, ARTHUR. STATUS: UNRESOLVED.

My hands shook.

Under my name were two handwritten words.

DAUGHTER RECRUITMENT.

Emily.

They had targeted her before Michael ever met her.

The marriage wasn't the beginning.

It was the final stage.

A plan fifteen years in the making.

Then we found another entry.

EASTER EVENT. PHASE 7.

I read it twice.

“What is Phase 7?”

Claire didn't answer.

An agent looked at the clock.

“Sir.”

“What?”

“It says here the event began at 8:00 a.m.”

I looked at the ledger.

Easter morning.

The phone call.

The party.

The police chief.

The basement.

Everything had happened according to schedule.

“What's Phase 7?” I asked again.

Claire pointed at the final line.

FAMILY WITNESS REMOVAL.

My blood ran cold.

“Who?”

She pointed at Emily's name.

“They intended to kill her.”

Silence.

The room seemed to contract around us.

“They were going to make her death look like suicide.”

I stared at the words.

“No.”

Claire nodded.

“The diagnosis.”

“The medication.”

“The police witnesses.”

“The locked room.”

“The papers.”

Everything connected.

They weren't merely trying to control Emily.

They were preparing to erase her.

Then the lights flickered.

An agent looked toward the hallway.

Someone had breached the building.

A monitor suddenly switched on.

Ethan appeared on screen.

Older.

Scarred.

Alive.

He looked straight into the camera.

“Arthur.”

I stood.

“Where is Emily?”

Ethan smiled.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“Not for long.”

I stepped toward the monitor.

“If you touch her…”

“I won't.”

“Then stop this.”

He shook his head.

“You still don't understand.”

“Explain it.”

“You found the ledger.”

“Yes.”

“Then you know what's coming.”

“Tell me.”

Ethan leaned closer to the camera.

“Phase 8.”

The screen went black.

Claire whispered:

“What is Phase 8?”

The agent looked down at the ledger.

His face turned white.

“Retaliation.”

A second line appeared on the monitor.

A countdown.

02:00:00

Then:

TARGET: ARTHUR COLLINS
