Chapter 13 - The Last WitnessThe cabin stood beside a dark lake three hours away.

Rain fell as we arrived.
The old structure looked exactly as I remembered.
Same porch.
Same fireplace.
Same broken chair.
Emily followed me inside.
“Mom loved this place.”
“She did.”
I walked toward the fireplace.
There was a stone beneath the mantel.
I removed it.
A hidden lock.
The key from the steel case fit.
The floor opened.
A staircase descended.
At the bottom was a steel room.
Inside was the original Lantern archive.
Hundreds of hard drives.
Thousands of documents.
Photographs.
Videos.
Names.
And one final box.
Inside was Linda's wedding ring.
I stared at it.
Beneath it was a note.
Arthur, if you found this, then they finally reached Emily.
My vision blurred.
The note continued.
I knew this day would come.
You will want revenge.
Do not choose revenge. Choose truth.
I closed my eyes.
Then another line:
The person you trust most will betray you before this ends.
I looked at Emily.
She stared at me.
“Dad?”
I folded the note.
“Nothing.”
We began copying the archive.
Then the lights went out.
A voice came through the speakers.
Ethan.
“You found it.”
I turned.
“You helped them?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To force you here.”
Emily looked at me.
“Dad…”
A door opened.
Ethan entered.
Gun in hand.
He aimed at me.
“Give me the archive.”
“No.”
“You don't understand what happens if it gets out.”
“People deserve to know.”
“People don't survive truth like this.”
I looked at him.
“You've been hiding for fifteen years.”
“Yes.”
“And what did it accomplish?”
Ethan's face hardened.
“Survival.”
He pointed at Emily.
“She dies if you don't give it to me.”
A second door opened.
Claire was brought inside.
Alive.
Bruised.
But conscious.
Victoria stood behind her.
Edward stood beside Victoria.
And behind them…
Michael.
Alive.
Emily stared at him in disbelief.
“You're alive.”
Michael said nothing.
Victoria smiled.
“Of course he is.”
I looked at Edward.
“You staged the murder.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To make your daughter desperate.”
Michael stepped closer.
“I tried to stop them.”
Emily recoiled.
“You hurt me.”
“I know.”
“You locked me upstairs.”
“I know.”
“You made me think I was crazy.”
His eyes filled with shame.
“I was trapped.”
Victoria slapped him.
“Enough.”
She pointed at me.
“Open the archive.”
I refused.
She nodded.
Michael suddenly lunged at Victoria.
He knocked the gun from her hand.
Everything exploded into chaos.
Ethan fired.
Edward ducked.
Claire kicked the chair backward.
Emily grabbed the fallen weapon.
I pulled her behind me.
Michael tackled Edward.
Victoria ran toward the archive.
I chased her.
She reached the control panel.
“You're too late.”
She pressed a button.
A red light appeared.
“What did you do?”
“Destroyed it.”
I froze.
Then she laughed.
“Did you really think I'd let you keep everything?”
The screens went black.
Emily walked toward the wall.
“Dad.”
“What?”
She pointed.
A small light was still blinking.
One drive.
One copy.
Hidden.
I remembered Linda's note.
Choose truth.
I removed the drive.
Victoria's face changed.
“No.”
She rushed me.
I stepped aside.
She fell against the console.
The alarms began.
The entire room shook.
A timer appeared.
SELF-DESTRUCT: 03:00
Ethan shouted:
“Move!”
We ran.
Behind us, the chamber doors slammed shut.
Emily grabbed my hand.
“Dad!”
We reached the stairs.
Then the floor collapsed.
I fell.
Emily screamed.
My hand caught the edge.
Below me was darkness.
Claire grabbed Emily.
Ethan reached toward me.
“Arthur!”
The concrete cracked beneath my fingers.
Then someone grabbed my wrist.
Michael.
He pulled me up.
I stared at him.
“Why?”
He said:
“Because she was right.”
“Who?”
“My wife.”
He looked at Emily.
May you like
“Your daughter saved all of us.”
Then the archive exploded beneath us.
