Chapter 6 - THE CHILD THEY WERE WAITING FORThe gun in Daniel's hand was steady.

Too steady.
He wasn't angry.
He wasn't panicked.
He looked like a man finishing a business transaction.
âWhat does that mean?â I asked.
He smiled.
âYou really don't remember?â
âI remember giving birth.â
âYou remember the pain.â
âYes.â
âYou remember the doctors.â
âYes.â
âYou remember Emma crying.â
âYes.â
âYou don't remember the room before that.â
My stomach twisted.
âWhat room?â
Daniel stepped closer.
âThe research room.â
Michael shouted.
âDon't listen to him.â
Daniel laughed.
âWhy?â
âBecause she deserves the truth.â
âTruth?â
Daniel looked at me.
âYour daughter was part of a clinical experiment.â
I felt my legs weaken.
âNo.â
Michael lowered his voice.
âSarahâŠâ
âTell me he's lying.â
Michael said nothing.
I looked at him.
âTell me!â
He closed his eyes.
âHe's not lying about the experiment.â
The world disappeared beneath my feet.
I turned toward Emma.
She was crying.
âWhat experiment?â
Michael answered.
âBefore Emma was born, there was a medical program funded by a private company.â
âWhat company?â
âVoss Biomedical.â
Daniel smiled.
âMy father founded it.â
I stared.
âWhy Emma?â
âBecause Michael had a genetic trait they were studying.â
âWhat trait?â
âA rare resistance to a neurological disease.â
I looked at Emma.
âShe inherited it?â
âWe believe so.â
Daniel said it.
âAnd that was worth millions.â
My mind raced.
âSo MarkâŠâ
âWas paid to marry you,â Daniel said.
âAnd my father?â
âWas paid to keep you quiet.â
Michael stepped forward.
âAnd I was threatened.â
âBy Daniel?â
âYes.â
Daniel laughed.
âYou make it sound dramatic.â
âYou kidnapped me,â Michael said.
âBecause you tried to expose us.â
I looked at Michael.
âWhat happened nine years ago?â
He stared at Emma.
âI found out Sarah was pregnant.â
âAnd?â
âI went to Robert.â
I turned toward my father.
He stood at the doorway.
He looked broken.
âYou were going to take Emma,â he said.
Michael nodded.
âBecause I knew what Daniel planned.â
My father lowered his head.
âI was afraid.â
âAfraid of what?â
Daniel answered.
âLosing everything.â
My father whispered.
âThey threatened to kill Sarah.â
âAnd you believed them,â Michael said.
âYes.â
âSo you took the money.â
âYes.â
I felt something inside me break.
âDadâŠâ
âI thought I could keep you alive.â
âBy selling me?â
âI was trying to protect you.â
âYou let Mark become my husband.â
âI didn't know what he would become.â
Mark's voice came from behind us.
âThat's not true.â
We all turned.
Two police officers were escorting him toward the house.
His wrists were cuffed.
His face was bruised.
But he was smiling.
âMark,â I whispered.
He looked at Daniel.
âYou're finished.â
Daniel raised his gun.
The officers drew theirs.
âDrop it!â
Daniel hesitated.
Then threw the gun onto the ground.
For one second, I thought it was over.
Then Mark started laughing.
I turned toward him.
âWhat?â
He looked at me.
âYou still think Daniel was the mastermind?â
Nobody moved.
Mark leaned closer.
âHe wasn't.â
Daniel stared at him.
âShut up.â
Mark smiled.
âTell her who signed the original order.â
Daniel's face changed.
Mark looked directly at my father.
âTell Sarah who ordered the experiment.â
My father said nothing.
The silence was unbearable.
Then Mark whispered:
âRobert did.â
I stared at my father.
âNo.â
Dad's face crumpled.
âSarahâŠâ
I stepped backward.
âYou approved it?â
âI didn't know what they were going to do.â
âYou signed it.â
âI was desperate.â
âYOU SIGNED IT.â
Emma began crying.
I pulled her close.
And then Mark said the one thing that shattered everything left inside me.
âThere is one more person who signed that document.â
I looked at him.
âWho?â
May you like
Mark's smile disappeared.
âYour mother.â
