Chapter 1 - THE NAME ON THE ENVELOPEMy husband thought no one would stop him that night.

He forgot our daughter knew exactly who to call.
It started over something small.
At least, that was what I told myself afterward.
I had refused to give Mark money from Emmaâs savings account.
That money had been sitting there for years. Birthday money. Christmas money. Twenty-dollar bills from relatives. Every little deposit I could make without Mark noticing.
It was supposed to help her when she turned eighteen.
College.
A car.
An apartment.
A future.
Mark had other plans.
âYou always make me look like Iâm begging.â
His voice had been calm at first.
Too calm.
I stood beside the kitchen counter, gripping the edge hard enough for my knuckles to whiten.
âThat account is Emmaâs.â
âEmma doesnât need it now.â
âShe will.â
âI need it now.â
âYou need money for gambling.â
His face changed.
I knew the second the words left my mouth that I had gone too far.
Mark stepped closer.
âYou think you know everything.â
âStay away from me.â
He grabbed my hair.
Pain exploded across my scalp.
âMark!â
He dragged me across the kitchen as if I weighed nothing.
I screamed.
Emma appeared in the doorway.
She was only nine years old.
Still wearing her pink pajamas.
Still clutching the stuffed rabbit she slept with every night.
âDaddy, stop!â
Mark shoved my head toward the open trash can.
âYou think youâre better than me?â
I tried to push myself up.
âLet me go!â
Emma started crying.
âPlease donât hurt Mommy!â
Then Mark shoved her.
She fell hard.
For one second, everything went silent.
Then I heard myself scream.
âDONâT TOUCH HER!â
Something changed in my husbandâs face.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Anger.
Pure, ugly anger.
Emma scrambled backward.
She looked at me.
Then at Mark.
Then she ran.
I expected her to hide in her room.
Instead, she grabbed my phone from the hallway table.
She dialed the only number she knew by heart.
âGrandpa?â
Her voice trembled.
âDaddy is hurting Mommy.â
My father, Robert, was silent for several seconds.
Then his voice changed.
âEmma, where are you?â
âAt home.â
âGet somewhere safe.â
âMommy is still inside.â
âIâm coming.â
Mark heard every word.
His face went pale.
âYou called your grandfather?â
Emma backed against the wall.
âI don't want you hurting Mommy.â
Mark released me.
He stormed toward her.
I threw myself between them.
âDonât!â
Ten minutes later, someone pounded on the front door.
Mark opened it.
My father stood on the porch.
Seventy-one years old.
Gray hair.
Bad knee.
But his shoulders were square.
His eyes went immediately to Emma.
Then to me.
I was clutching my scalp.
My cheek was bleeding.
My fatherâs expression became something I had never seen before.
He walked inside.
âWhat did you do to my daughter?â
Mark laughed.
âThis is my house.â
My father stepped closer.
âYou put your hands on her?â
Mark shoved him.
That was the moment everything exploded.
My father punched him.
Mark stumbled backward into the dining table.
Then swung.
They crashed against the chairs.
âDad!â
Neither listened.
Mark drove my father against the wall.
My father hit him again.
âYou put your hands on my daughter?â
âMy marriage is none of your business!â
âMy granddaughter called me because she was terrified of you!â
Then Mark laughed.
Blood ran from the corner of his mouth.
âYou want to know why she stayed?â
My father stopped.
Mark pointed toward the stairs.
More specifically, toward the locked cabinet beneath them.
âShe knows why.â
My stomach dropped.
âMarkâŠâ
He smiled at me.
âGo on.â
My father looked at me.
âSarah?â
âDad, donât open it.â
He walked toward the cabinet.
âSarah, what is in there?â
âNothing.â
Mark laughed.
âThatâs what she told herself too.â
He reached into his pocket.
A small brass key landed on the floor.
Clink.
My father picked it up.
I took one step toward him.
âDadâŠâ
He opened the cabinet.
Inside were photographs.
Legal documents.
Old bank statements.
A red folder.
And a thick envelope.
Across the front was one handwritten name.
EMMA.
My father pulled it free.
His fingers trembled.
He opened it.
The first document was a birth certificate.
The second was a DNA report.
The third was something much older.
A photograph.
My father stared at the papers.
His face slowly lost its color.
âWhat the hell is this?â
Mark wiped the blood from his mouth.
âYou finally found out.â
My father turned toward me.
âSarahâŠâ
I couldn't breathe.
He looked back at the document.
Then at Mark.
Then at me again.
His voice broke.
âWhy does this say Mark isnât Emmaâs biological father?â
I closed my eyes.
Because there was no safe answer.
Not anymore.
My father held up the DNA report.
âSarah, who is Emmaâs father?â
I couldn't speak.
Mark smiled.
May you like
Then he said four words that made my blood freeze.
âYou already know him.â
