Chapter 3 - The Man Dante Trusted With His Life

The Photograph

By midnight, the Falcone estate looked like a fortress under siege.

Cars filled the driveway.

Guards stood on every corner.

Men searched every room.

And Matteo Rinaldi was nowhere to be found.

Dante had ordered him back from a security meeting thirty-seven minutes earlier.

He never came.

I watched Dante make call after call.

Straight to voicemail.

Then he looked at the photograph again.

Carmela and Matteo.

Smiling.

Friends.

Family.

The old photograph contradicted everything I knew about Dante's world.

I had always thought loyalty was the only currency people like him understood.

Now I realized betrayal was worth more.

Sophia sat beside me on the library sofa.

“Mommy.”

“Yes?”

“Mr. Sad is angry.”

I glanced toward Dante.

“He has a name.”

“Dante.”

“Right.”

Sophia looked around.

“Pretty lady says hurry.”

My pulse quickened.

“What does she want?”

Sophia pointed at the ceiling.

“Go upstairs.”

Dante heard her.

He looked at me.

Then at Sophia.

“Which room?”

Sophia pointed.

“The blue one.”

There was no blue room on the first floor.

Dante knew that.

We followed her to the second floor.

Sophia walked confidently through a corridor I had never entered.

She stopped before an old nursery.

Dante opened it.

Dusty toys filled the shelves.

Carmela had once used the room for nieces and nephews.

Sophia walked straight to an old rocking horse.

She touched its wooden ear.

“Here.”

Dante lifted the horse.

A small metal key lay underneath.

He stared at it.

Then at Sophia.

He didn't ask how she knew.

He simply took it.

The key opened a locked drawer in Carmela's vanity.

Inside were letters.

Three passports.

Two USB drives.

And a photograph of a man I had never seen.

Dante looked at the photo.

“Who is he?”

I shook my head.

Sophia leaned over.

“He's scared.”

Dante stared at her.

“What?”

Sophia pointed.

“His eyes.”

The photograph showed the unknown man standing beside a warehouse.

Behind him was a shipping container marked with the Falcone family symbol.

Dante's expression became colder.

He recognized something.

“Dock 17.”

He called another number.

“Get me the records for Dock 17. Five years.”

He paused.

“What do you mean they’re gone?”

His face hardened.

“Who authorized deletion?”

Silence.

Then Dante hung up.

“They've been erasing records.”

I looked at the USB drives.

“What are those?”

“Carmela was investigating something.”

“Something big?”

Dante's eyes met mine.

“She thought someone was stealing from me.”

“And Matteo?”

“Matteo controlled internal security.”

A gunshot exploded outside.

Glass shattered.

Sophia screamed.

Dante moved faster than I thought possible.

He grabbed Sophia and pulled her behind the sofa.

Two guards rushed in.

“Shots from the east wall!”

Dante shoved me down.

Another shot tore through the window.

The bullet struck the bookshelf above my head.

Books crashed over the floor.

Sophia began crying.

Dante held her against his chest.

“Look at me,” he told her.

She buried her face in his shirt.

“Don't let him get Mommy.”

Dante glanced at me.

“I won't.”

The shooting stopped.

His guards disappeared through the doorway.

One returned seconds later.

“Shooter escaped.”

Dante stood slowly.

He looked at the shattered window.

Then at Carmela's photograph in his hand.

Suddenly he noticed something behind the frame.

A folded piece of paper.

He opened it.

Only one sentence.

THEY WILL COME FOR THE CHILD NEXT.

Dante's eyes shifted toward Sophia.

The little girl was still crying.

He looked at me.

“Pack a bag.”

I stared.

“For where?”

“Somewhere no one in my organization knows.”

May you like

He tucked the paper into his pocket.

“Because whoever killed Carmela now knows your daughter can hear her.”
