Chapter 14 - The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The Truth Behind the Locked Room

Carmela walked into the room.

Alive.

Older.

Scarred.

But alive.

Dante's gun dropped from his hand.

“No.”

Carmela's eyes filled with tears.

“I'm sorry.”

He stumbled backward.

“You died.”

“I know.”

“I held your body.”

“It wasn't my body.”

“What?”

Carmela looked at Giovanni.

“He arranged the ambush.”

Giovanni lowered his eyes.

“The woman who died was one of his decoys.”

Dante stared.

Carmela continued.

“I was taken.”

“By who?”

“The Rose Syndicate.”

“For what?”

“Because I had proof.”

She looked toward Sophia.

“They wanted Adrian.”

“Why?”

“Because he was the heir.”

Dante shook his head.

“I don't understand.”

Carmela smiled sadly.

“Then you never knew your father's business.”

She explained everything.

Dante's father had built the organization legally first.

Then expanded into underground operations.

Years later, Carmela discovered the trafficking network.

She tried to stop it.

Giovanni tried to silence her.

Salvatore tried to seize control.

Daniel handled the money.

Matteo became Carmela's secret ally.

Rosa became the escape route.

And the twins became leverage.

“But why did you let Dante believe you were dead?”

Carmela looked at him.

“Because if he knew I was alive, they would kill Sophia.”

Dante's voice broke.

“You could have told me.”

“I tried.”

He stared.

“The locked room.”

Carmela nodded.

“The recordings.”

“The messages.”

“Yes.”

“Then Sophia…”

“She remembers me.”

Dante looked at Sophia.

Carmela knelt.

Sophia ran into her arms.

“I knew you'd come.”

Carmela cried.

“I never stopped.”

Dante watched them.

His face broke.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just one tear.

Then another.

Eighteen months of grief came down his face.

Carmela stood and walked toward him.

“I am sorry.”

Dante whispered.

“I searched every grave.”

“I know.”

“I killed men for you.”

“I know.”

“I became someone you wouldn't recognize.”

Carmela touched his face.

“I still recognize you.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel pulled a gun.

He shot Giovanni.

Chaos erupted.

Matteo shot Daniel.

Salvatore ran.

Carmela grabbed Sophia.

Adrian grabbed my hand.

Dante chased Salvatore.

We heard footsteps upstairs.

Then a scream.

Dante appeared at the top of the stairs.

Salvatore had escaped through the tunnel.

In his hand was the last ledger.

Dante looked at Carmela.

“He has the evidence.”

Carmela shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Rosa.

“Rosa has the original.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

Carmela smiled.

“When I met you six years ago, I gave you a box.”

I searched my memory.

The old diner.

A wooden box.

I had thrown it away.

Or so I thought.

Carmela whispered:

“You never threw it away.”

Dante looked at me.

“Where is it?”

I suddenly remembered.

My mother's house.

Attic.

Under the floorboards.

Carmela grabbed my hand.

“We have one problem.”

“What?”

She looked toward the dark tunnel.

“Salvatore already knows where it is.”

Then every light in the house went out.

A gunshot echoed from downstairs.

And Sophia screamed:

“Grandpa found Mommy.”
