Chapter 11 - The words made no sense.“Mara died eighteen months ago.”

“I know.”

“Then how could she hide Elsie?”

“She didn't hide her physically.”

Julian looked at the floor.

“She hid the records.”

“What records?”

“Her identity.”

I stared.

“Explain.”

Julian told me what he had finally discovered.

Mara had learned that Marcus planned to manipulate the trust.

She knew Elsie would become a legal target once the trust was activated.

So Mara created a second identity trail for Elsie.

Not a fake child.

A protected child.

She registered certain documents under alternate guardianship records.

That way, if anything happened to her, no one could easily locate Elsie's legal inheritance.

But Julian had eventually found out.

Marcus had discovered it too.

And that was why they needed the foundation.

They needed access to the original records.

“The papers are still somewhere,” I said.

Julian nodded.

“Clara knows where.”

Then a sound came from behind us.

Clara stepped into the basement.

Her face was pale.

“I do.”

I stared at her.

“You betrayed Mara.”

Clara shook her head.

“I saved her child.”

“Then where is Elsie?”

Clara smiled through tears.

“With someone Mara trusted.”

“Who?”

“Your sister.”

I froze.

I hadn't spoken to my sister in six years.

She lived two states away.

Clara handed me a photograph.

Elsie was sitting in a kitchen.

Alive.

Safe.

Eating fruit.

I nearly collapsed.

Julian covered his face.

“She knew.”

Clara nodded.

“She knew something would happen.”

“But why let everyone believe Elsie was missing?”

“Because if they knew she was safe, they would have found her.”

I stared at the photograph.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Mara told me never to.”

I looked at the back.

There was a handwritten message.

When he starts looking for the girl, he will finally look for the truth.

I felt tears burn my eyes.

“Mara knew.”

“Yes.”

“She knew Julian would fail.”

Clara nodded.

“She knew he loved his ambition more than he loved courage.”

Julian flinched.

I looked at my son.

For once, he didn't defend himself.

Then Clara gave me a second file.

“The killer is inside your family.”

I opened it.

Inside were records showing every communication before Mara's death.

One number appeared repeatedly.

Samuel's.

I felt betrayed all over again.

“But Samuel helped us today.”

“He was trying to undo what he built.”

“What did he build?”

Clara looked toward Julian.

“A system.”

She explained.

Years earlier, Samuel had helped my father hide assets.

When Marcus returned decades later, Samuel became the bridge between them.

He created the shell companies.

He built the payment system.

He trained the people who would eventually manipulate the foundation.

But when Mara discovered the truth, Samuel panicked.

He tried to warn her.

Too late.

Marcus found out.

Samuel couldn't stop the machine he had built.

So he secretly began sabotaging it.

The paper flowers were his way of leaving a trail.

Each invoice number was a breadcrumb.

My anger shifted.

“Then why did Mara say don't trust him?”

Clara answered:

“Because she didn't.”

“She knew he had helped them.”

“But she also knew he was trying to stop them.”

I sat down.

Every truth had another truth beneath it.

Then Clara said:

“There is one final thing.”

“What?”

“Mara left a video.”

“For whom?”

“For Elsie.”

I opened the file.

Mara appeared on screen.

She looked tired.

But alive.

Not the woman from the recordings.

This was filmed shortly before her death.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Elsie, you're too young to understand this.”

Her smile trembled.

“But one day you will.”

She touched her stomach.

Not pregnant.

Protective.

“You will hear people say your father was weak.”

“You will hear people say your grandfather was cruel.”

“You will hear people say I was reckless.”

She took a breath.

“Believe none of them until you have the whole story.”

Then her face changed.

“I knew someone would come for you.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“So I made a promise.”

“No matter what happens to me, you will never belong to them.”

The screen went black.

Julian began sobbing.

I couldn't move.

Then a final message appeared.

TRUST CLAUSE ACTIVATED ONLY BY BLOODLINE VERIFICATION.

Underneath it:

ELIZABETH JULIAN MARA.

Elsie's full legal name.

I looked at Clara.

“Why activate it now?”

Clara pointed toward the screen.

“Because someone already did.”

My phone buzzed.

A banking notification.

The trust had transferred.

Not to Elsie.

To another account.

An account controlled by…

Julian.

I stared at the screen.

Julian looked at me.

“I didn't do it.”

Then the lights flickered.

Every security alarm in the building began screaming.

Samuel's voice came through the intercom.

“Cesare, get out.”

May you like

“Why?”

“Because the foundation is on fire.”
