Chapter 10 - The final transfer was scheduled for noon.If it cleared, Marcus would control the last property necessary to complete the redevelopment deal.

But more importantly, the transfer would trigger the trust clause.

Control of the remaining assets would shift automatically.

To Elsie.

A seventeen-month-old child.

Marcus wasn't stealing the money.

He was trying to control the inheritance attached to it.

And Julian had unknowingly helped him build the path.

I called an emergency board meeting.

Every director arrived.

Arthur Bell.

Helen Price.

Robert Sloan.

Three people I had trusted for years.

I placed the paper flower in the center of the table.

“HP-4831.”

Nobody spoke.

I dropped the financial records beside it.

“Seven payments.”

Arthur cleared his throat.

“I don't understand.”

“You will.”

I pressed play.

Mara's recording filled the room.

I watched their faces.

Helen looked away.

Robert went pale.

Arthur stayed still.

Too still.

Then Arthur said:

“You don't have proof.”

I smiled.

“I do.”

I placed another file on the table.

“Your company received $214,500.”

Arthur's face changed.

“I can explain.”

“You'll explain in court.”

Robert stood.

“This is absurd.”

“Sit down.”

He sat.

Helen began crying.

She whispered:

“I didn't know.”

“Then tell me.”

“My husband…”

“Who?”

She shook her head.

“Marcus.”

I stared at her.

“How long?”

“Two years.”

“Did you know about Mara?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know she was threatened?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Elsie existed?”

She nodded.

I looked around the room.

Three board members.

Three compromised people.

And one question remained.

Who had authorized the final transfer?

Samuel stood beside me.

Then he said:

“Me.”

Everyone turned.

I felt the room tilt.

“What?”

Samuel looked at me.

“I authorized the first seven.”

Silence.

“And you're authorizing the eighth?”

“No.”

He pulled a USB drive from his pocket.

“I've been waiting for this moment.”

“What moment?”

“The moment you finally trusted the evidence more than the people.”

He inserted the drive.

A spreadsheet appeared.

Every payment.

Every shell company.

Every beneficiary.

At the bottom was a single name.

Arthur Bell.

I turned.

Arthur stood.

“You bastard.”

Arthur smiled.

“You've always been sentimental, Cesare.”

“Where is Elsie?”

He laughed.

“You still think this is about the child?”

“It is.”

“No.”

He stepped backward.

“This is about the trust.”

Then security entered.

Arthur had triggered the alarms.

Doors locked.

Windows sealed.

A fire erupted in the hallway.

Smoke filled the room.

Panic exploded.

Arthur disappeared through a hidden corridor.

I ran after him.

Samuel followed.

We reached an elevator.

Arthur was already inside.

The doors closed.

Samuel pulled open the maintenance panel.

“The elevator goes to the archive basement.”

We took the stairs.

Below the foundation was a room I'd never seen.

Server racks.

Paper records.

Hard drives.

Boxes.

And hundreds of files.

I walked through them.

Every property.

Every family.

Every payment.

Every forged document.

This wasn't a side operation.

It was an empire.

Then Samuel stopped.

“Cesare.”

He pointed.

A box marked MARA.

Inside was her handbag.

Her phone.

Her private investigator's notebook.

And a photograph.

Mara standing with Ethan.

But beside Ethan was someone else.

A woman.

Clara.

I stared.

“Clara was working with Ethan.”

Samuel nodded.

“No.”

I looked closer.

Clara wasn't meeting Ethan.

She was handing him something.

A memory card.

I opened Mara's notebook.

One line was circled repeatedly.

CLARA KNOWS WHO KILLED ME.

I felt sick.

Then the basement lights went out.

A door slammed.

I heard footsteps running.

Samuel shouted:

“Cesare!”

I turned.

He was gone.

In the darkness, my phone rang.

I answered.

Mara's voice whispered:

“Don't trust Samuel.”

I froze.

The recording continued.

“Samuel helped them build the system.”

I stared at the empty corridor.

Then another voice spoke over the recording.

My son's.

“Dad.”

I turned.

Julian stood in the doorway.

Blood covered his shirt.

“Where is Elsie?”

He looked at me.

“She isn't with Marcus.”

My heart stopped.

“Then where is she?”

He took one step forward.

“She was never kidnapped.”

I stared at him.

“What are you saying?”

Julian whispered:

“She was hidden.”

“By whom?”

May you like

His eyes filled with tears.

“By Mara.”
