CHAPTER 6: THE WOMAN BEHIND THE LOCKED DOOR

The sound came again.

A small knock.

Weak.

Almost impossible to hear.

But I heard it.

Someone was inside.

My hand froze around my phone.

For a few seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

Every instinct inside me screamed to run.

But another voice was louder.

The voice of a mother.

The same voice that had been whispering to me for weeks.

The voice that told me something was wrong with Maya.

The voice I should have trusted from the beginning.

I stepped closer to the metal door.

“Hello?”

My voice shook.

No answer.

I leaned toward the door.

“Is someone in there?”

Silence.

Then…

A faint sound.

Not a knock this time.

A sob.

My heart dropped.

I immediately stepped back and called emergency services.

My fingers trembled as I explained.

“There’s someone locked inside my basement.”

The operator stayed calm.

“Ma’am, are you currently inside the residence?”

“Yes.”

“Is the person inside the room injured?”

“I don’t know.”

“Is the person who locked them there still nearby?”

I looked around the basement.

At the empty shelves.

The hidden door.

The message from Robert.

My stomach tightened.

“I don’t know.”

But deep down, I knew.

Robert wasn’t gone.

Not really.

People like Robert didn’t disappear when their secrets were discovered.

They moved.

They adapted.

They protected themselves.

The operator told me to leave the basement and wait outside.

But I couldn’t.

Not yet.

Because someone was behind that door.

Someone had been trapped there.

And I needed to know who.

I reached for the handle.

Locked.

Again.

I searched around quickly.

A toolbox sat against the wall.

Inside was an old hammer.

I grabbed it.

“Ma’am, do not enter the room,” the operator warned through the phone.

But I wasn’t thinking clearly anymore.

All I could think about was Maya.

Her fear.

Her silence.

Her notebook.

The hidden photograph.

The woman named Elena.

I struck the lock.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The metal finally cracked.

The door opened slightly.

A wave of cold air escaped.

Then I heard it.

A voice.

A woman’s voice.

“Please…”

I froze.

“Are you okay?”

The woman coughed.

“Please don’t let him know I’m awake.”

My blood turned cold.

Him.

Not Robert.

Not your husband.

Him.

The way she said it carried the same fear Maya had.

I opened the door wider.

The room behind it was small.

Much smaller than I expected.

There was a bed.

A chair.

A small table.

A water bottle.

A blanket.

And on the wall…

Photographs.

Dozens of photographs.

I stepped inside.

The woman sitting on the bed looked exhausted.

She appeared to be in her early forties.

Her hair was messy.

Her face was pale.

But her eyes were clear.

Terrified.

“You’re Claire,” she whispered.

I stopped.

“How do you know my name?”

She looked at me.

“Because Robert talks about you.”

My stomach turned.

“What?”

“He talks about everything.”

The woman slowly stood.

“My name is Elena.”

The room felt smaller.

“You’re the woman in the picture.”

Her expression changed.

“You found it.”

I nodded.

“Who are you?”

She looked down.

Then she whispered:

“I was Robert’s employee.”

I waited.

“That’s all?”

A painful smile appeared on her face.

“No.”

The silence that followed felt heavy.

“He didn’t let me leave.”

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

Elena looked toward the door.

“He controlled my life.”

My heart pounded.

“How long have you been here?”

She hesitated.

“Eight months.”

Eight months.

The number echoed in my mind.

Eight months.

A person had been hidden beneath my house.

And I had lived upstairs.

Cooking meals.

Watching television.

Sleeping.

While someone was trapped below.

“How did this happen?”

Elena sat down slowly.

“I worked for Robert’s company.”

“What company?”

“Financial consulting.”

I knew the company.

Robert had built it over years.

He always told people he was successful because he was disciplined.

Because he worked harder than everyone else.

Elena continued.

“I discovered something.”

“What?”

“Money was missing.”

I felt a chill.

“How much?”

“A lot.”

“How much?”

She looked directly at me.

“Enough that he couldn’t let me talk.”

I felt sick.

“So he locked you here?”

She nodded.

“He told me nobody would believe me.”

The words hit me.

Nobody would believe me.

Exactly what Maya had written.

Exactly what Robert had told her.

A pattern.

A terrifying pattern.

“He said I was unstable.”

Elena’s voice trembled.

“He told people I was mentally unwell.”

I looked at the photographs on the wall.

Then I noticed something.

Pictures of Maya.

My heart stopped.

“What are those?”

Elena followed my eyes.

Her face changed.

“I’m sorry.”

I walked closer.

There were photographs of Maya leaving school.

Maya walking home.

Maya sitting in the backyard.

My hands started shaking.

“Why does he have pictures of my daughter?”

Elena looked terrified.

“Because he was afraid she knew.”

“Knew what?”

She swallowed.

“That he was watching everything.”

The room became silent.

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

Robert wasn’t just dismissing Maya’s pain.

He wasn’t just controlling her.

He had been monitoring her.

Watching her.

Keeping records.

Like she was a problem to manage.

Like she wasn’t his daughter.

Like she was evidence.

“Why?”

I whispered.

“Why would he do this?”

Elena looked at me.

“Because Robert doesn’t see people as people.”

She paused.

“He sees them as things he owns.”

The sentence cut deeper than I expected.

Because suddenly, every memory made sense.

The decisions.

The arguments.

The way he always needed control.

The way he made me doubt myself.

The way he made Maya afraid.

A sound interrupted us.

Footsteps.

Above us.

Both Elena and I froze.

Her face turned white.

“No.”

“What?”

“He’s back.”

My heart stopped.

“Robert?”

Elena nodded.

“He always comes back when he thinks someone knows.”

The basement door upstairs opened.

A voice echoed down.

Calm.

Controlled.

“Claire?”

My blood ran cold.

“Where are you?”

Robert walked closer.

“I know you’re here.”

Elena grabbed my arm.

“Don’t let him see me.”

I looked at her.

“He can’t hurt you anymore.”

But even as I said it…

I wasn’t sure.

Because Robert had spent years convincing everyone he was the victim.

The good man.

The reasonable man.

And now I finally understood something.

The most dangerous secrets are not hidden in dark rooms.

They are hidden behind smiles.

Robert’s footsteps reached the top of the basement stairs.

“Claire.”

His voice was gentle.

Almost loving.

“I know you found her.”

I looked at Elena.

She was shaking.

Then Robert said something that made my blood freeze.

Something I never expected.

“Now you understand why Maya had to be punished.”

The world went silent.

My daughter’s name.

His words.

The truth behind the locked door.

Everything connected.

And I realized…

May you like

Maya wasn’t just a witness.

She was the reason Robert had started losing control.
