CHAPTER 10: THE FATHER SHE NEVER KNEW

The paper trembled in my hands.
I read the words again.
Then again.
As if the letters might rearrange themselves into something different.
Something easier.
Something I could understand.
But they didn’t.
The truth remained exactly where it had been hiding for fifteen years.
Robert Carter was not Maya’s biological father.
I sat alone at the kitchen table, surrounded by silence.
The same kitchen where Robert had once kissed me goodbye before work.
The same kitchen where Maya had stood months earlier, holding her stomach, trying to tell us something was wrong.
The same kitchen where I had failed to see the fear in my daughter’s eyes.
Now I was discovering another truth.
I had spent fifteen years protecting a secret.
A secret that had shaped all of our lives.
And maybe…
A secret that had shaped Robert into the person he became.
I called Elena the next morning.
She answered after the first ring.
“Claire?”
“I need to know everything.”
There was silence.
Then she asked:
“Are you sure?”
I looked at the photograph of baby Maya sitting beside me.
“No.”
I took a breath.
“But I need to.”
A few seconds passed.
Then Elena said:
“Come to my place.”
When I arrived, Elena had prepared a folder.
Old documents.
Photographs.
Newspaper articles.
Records.
She placed everything on the table.
“I spent years trying to understand Robert.”
I looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because I knew something was wrong.”
She opened the folder.
“Robert wasn’t always like this.”
That surprised me.
“He wasn’t?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“He changed after a certain night.”
I already knew the answer.
“The night of the accident.”
Elena nodded.
“Yes.”
My chest tightened.
“Tell me what happened.”
She took a deep breath.
“Your friend’s name was Sarah.”
I closed my eyes.
Sarah.
My best friend.
The person who knew everything about me.
The person who stood beside me when I found out I was pregnant.
The person who disappeared from my life in one terrible night.
Everyone said it was an accident.
Everyone said she lost control of her car.
Everyone said there was nothing anyone could have done.
But now…
I wasn’t sure anymore.
“Sarah knew Robert before me.”
My eyes opened.
“What?”
Elena nodded.
“They worked together.”
“How?”
“Sarah discovered financial problems in Robert’s company.”
I felt a cold feeling in my chest.
“The same thing Elena discovered?”
“Yes.”
I looked down.
“So Sarah knew he was hiding money.”
“She knew more than that.”
“What?”
Elena hesitated.
“She knew Robert had been using fake accounts for years.”
I swallowed.
“And Maya?”
Elena looked at me.
“That’s where everything connects.”
Fifteen years ago, before I met Robert, Sarah and I were roommates.
She was the kind of person who noticed everything.
Small details.
Tiny changes.
Things other people ignored.
When I met Robert, she liked him at first.
She thought he was charming.
She thought I was lucky.
But after a few months, she started asking questions.
Questions about his business.
Questions about his past.
Questions about why certain people disappeared from his life.
At the time, I thought she was being suspicious.
I defended him.
I told her she didn’t understand him.
I told her she was judging him unfairly.
Looking back…
I realized Robert had already started separating me from people who could see the truth.
Sarah was the first person who tried to pull me away.
“Why didn’t you tell me this before?” I asked Elena.
Her expression became painful.
“Because Robert made sure nobody could.”
“How?”
“He threatened me.”
I looked at her.
“He told me if I spoke, he would make everyone believe I was unstable.”
The same tactic.
The same weapon.
The same pattern.
Destroy the person.
Not the evidence.
“Then what happened to Sarah?”
Elena looked at the folder.
“She found something.”
“What?”
“A recording.”
My heart stopped.
“A recording of what?”
“Robert.”
Saying things he should never have said.”
I leaned forward.
“Where is it?”
Elena looked away.
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”
“No.”
She lowered her voice.
“But Robert spent years looking for it.”
That evening, I returned to the hotel where Maya was staying.
She was sitting near the window reading a book.
For a moment, she looked like any other fifteen-year-old girl.
Not a witness.
Not a victim.
Not someone carrying secrets that belonged to adults.
Just my daughter.
“Mom?”
I sat beside her.
“I need to tell you something.”
She immediately looked worried.
“About Dad?”
“Yes.”
She closed the book.
“What happened?”
I held her hand.
“There’s something about your past.”
Her face changed.
“What kind of thing?”
I struggled to find the right words.
The truth was heavy.
Too heavy.
“Maya…”
I took a breath.
“Robert isn’t your biological father.”
She stared at me.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then:
“What?”
“I’m sorry.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“No, Mom.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Because I was afraid.
Because I thought I was protecting her.
Because I thought some truths hurt more than lies.
But I knew better now.
Secrets didn’t disappear.
They waited.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
She looked away.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
The words hurt.
Because she was right.
Robert said he protected her.
I said I protected her.
Everyone claimed protection.
But nobody asked what Maya needed.
“What happened to my real father?”
The question I had feared.
I looked down.
“I don’t know everything.”
That was the hardest part.
After fifteen years…
I still didn’t know.
“But I know his name.”
Maya looked at me.
“Who is he?”
I swallowed.
“Daniel.”
The name felt strange saying it aloud.
A name I had buried.
A name connected to a time before Robert.
Before the lies.
Before the fear.
“Is he alive?”
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know.
And that frightened me.
That night, another piece of evidence arrived.
The police had searched Robert’s office.
They found a hidden file.
Inside was a letter.
Written fifteen years ago.
Addressed to me.
But I had never seen it.
The officer handed it to me.
“Mrs. Carter, this was hidden behind a panel in your husband’s office.”
My hands shook.
I opened it.
The handwriting wasn’t Robert’s.
It was Sarah’s.
Only one page.
Only a few sentences.
But they changed everything.
Claire,
If you’re reading this, it means Robert finally failed to hide the truth.
You need to know something. The night of the accident was not an accident.
Robert knows where Daniel is.
He has known the entire time.
My heart stopped.
I continued reading.
And Claire…
Maya was never the thing he hated.
She was the thing he feared.
The letter ended there.
No explanation.
No goodbye.
Just a warning.
I looked at Maya sleeping peacefully in the next room.
Then I looked at Sarah’s letter.
And I finally understood.
Robert didn’t spend fifteen years controlling Maya because she reminded him of a betrayal.
He controlled her because he knew one day…
She would grow old enough to uncover the truth.
And now she had.
But there was one question left.
One question that haunted me.
May you like
Where was Daniel?
And why had Robert spent fifteen years making sure Maya never found him?
