Chapter 8 - The sentence hung in the room.“What do you mean, changed her?”

Emma looked at Calla.
“I don't know yet.”
Daniel's voice hardened.
“Then explain.”
Emma took a breath.
“When Calla was four, she was sick.”
Calla looked confused.
“I was?”
“You had a fever.”
Daniel remembered.
“It lasted three days.”
Emma nodded.
“After that, they gave her medication.”
Daniel frowned.
“Who?”
“The hospital.”
“You're saying the hospital altered our daughter?”
“I don't know.”
Detective Hayes interrupted.
“Let's slow down.”
Emma nodded.
She remembered more.
The night before she disappeared, she had returned home and found Drea in the hallway.
Drea was holding a folder.
Inside was Calla's medical history.
Emma had asked why she had it.
Drea told her Daniel needed help.
Then Vivian appeared.
That was the first time Emma had seen her.
Vivian told her Calla had a rare neurological condition.
She needed a procedure.
Emma refused.
The next morning, Emma disappeared.
But there was another detail.
Calla had a small scar behind her left ear.
She had always thought it came from a childhood accident.
Now Emma touched it.
“That wasn't there before.”
Daniel stared at the scar.
“I remember the accident.”
“No,” Emma said.
“You don't.”
Detective Hayes examined it.
“That's a surgical scar.”
Daniel felt his stomach drop.
“Then what did they do?”
Emma whispered:
“I don't know.”
A specialist was called in.
The doctor examined Calla.
Then he asked for her old medical records.
The files showed no surgery.
No procedure.
No hospital admission.
Nothing.
Yet the scar was real.
The doctor looked confused.
“This doesn't match the paperwork.”
Detective Hayes asked:
“Can you determine what kind of procedure caused it?”
“Possibly.”
Calla sat quietly.
She was tired.
She wanted her mother.
She wanted her life back.
Instead, every answer seemed to open another door.
That night, Daniel returned to the underground room alone.
He searched every box.
At the bottom of one container, he found a small VHS tape.
The label read:
CALLA. AGE 4.
He rushed upstairs.
They found a player in storage.
The screen flickered.
Static.
Then a video appeared.
Calla was four.
She was sitting in a hospital bed.
Emma stood beside her.
Drea was in the corner.
And Vivian Cross stood behind the camera.
Calla remembered none of it.
Vivian asked:
“Who do you love?”
Calla answered:
“Mommy.”
“Who do you trust?”
“Mommy.”
“Would you do anything to stay with Mommy?”
“Yes.”
Vivian smiled.
Then she looked at Drea.
“Again.”
The recording repeated.
Question after question.
Until something changed.
Vivian asked:
“Who is your mother?”
Calla hesitated.
Then looked toward Drea.
The child whispered:
“You.”
Emma collapsed into Daniel's arms.
“That was after the medication,” she whispered.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“What did they do to her?”
The video continued.
Vivian placed two photographs on the table.
One showed Emma.
One showed Drea.
She asked Calla:
“Which one makes you feel safe?”
Calla pointed at Drea.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Calla whispered:
“I don't remember that.”
Emma hugged her.
“You weren't supposed to.”
Daniel stood.
“They manipulated our daughter.”
Detective Hayes looked at the tape.
“Perhaps.”
Then she noticed something in the final frame.
A man stood outside the room.
The image was blurry.
But his face was visible.
Daniel froze.
It was his father.
Alive.
Standing outside the room.
