Chapter 13 - Daniel could not breathe. The memory was impossible.

He had no recollection of being tied to anything.

Yet Calla described details no ten-year-old could invent.

A green lamp.

A cracked mirror.

A bloodstain on the floor.

His father's voice.

Vivian's voice.

Drea crying.

And Emma screaming behind a second door.

Calla remembered herself hiding beneath a table.

She had been four.

Watching.

Listening.

Waiting.

Then she saw something.

Her father had been given an injection.

After that, he stopped resisting.

The memory ended.

Daniel sat down.

“What happened after?”

Calla shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Emma knelt beside her.

“You don't have to remember.”

“But I do.”

Calla touched the wall.

“There was writing.”

“What writing?”

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

THE FIRST CHILD OBEYS. THE SECOND CHILD FORGETS. THE THIRD CHILD WATCHES.

Daniel stared.

“Three children.”

Emma nodded.

The pieces were finally connecting.

Calla.

Caleb.

Lila.

Three children.

Three different roles.

One conditioned to obey.

One hidden.

One kept as a witness.

But why?

Detective Hayes searched the documents again.

There was a reference to a project.

Inheritance Continuity Initiative.

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

The detective found an old legal file.

His father's family had been fighting over a massive trust.

The inheritance would pass only through direct descendants under certain conditions.

But there was a clause.

If one child was declared unstable or missing, guardianship could be transferred.

Daniel's father had discovered that Emma was pregnant.

Then he discovered she was carrying twins.

And perhaps a third child.

The children were not just family.

They were leverage.

Assets.

He had manipulated records to control the inheritance.

Drea had been brought in because she could legally become Calla's guardian.

Vivian had handled the medical side.

But one thing still didn't fit.

“Why keep Emma alive?”

Daniel asked.

Emma looked at him.

“Because I knew where the money was.”

Everyone stared.

“What money?”

Emma took a breath.

“Your father moved part of the family trust.”

“How much?”

“Twenty-four million dollars.”

Daniel went silent.

“Where?”

Emma smiled sadly.

“I never knew.”

“What did he want from you?”

“He thought I had the account information.”

“You didn't?”

“No.”

“Then why keep you?”

“Because he believed I would remember.”

Daniel suddenly understood.

His father hadn't just erased memories from Calla.

He had been trying to erase memories from everyone.

There was a hidden account.

A hidden inheritance.

And Emma was the only person who could access it.

Drea had helped him.

Vivian had helped him.

But there was still one missing piece.

The person controlling everything.

Then the basement door opened.

Everyone turned.

Drea stood there.

Blood was running down her forehead.

Detective Hayes raised her weapon.

“Hands where I can see them.”

Drea obeyed.

“I didn't come to hurt anyone.”

Daniel stared.

“Then why are you here?”

Drea looked at Emma.

“I came to tell you who Vivian works for.”

Emma whispered:

“Your father?”

Drea shook her head.

“Not anymore.”

“Then who?”

Drea's eyes moved to Calla.

“Someone your father never knew existed.”

Calla stepped back.

“Who?”

Drea swallowed.

“Your grandmother.”

Daniel went rigid.

“My mother died before I met you.”

Drea shook her head.

“Not your mother.”

She looked at Emma.

“Her mother.”

Emma's face went blank.

“My mother?”

Drea nodded.

“She was alive.”

Emma whispered:

“Impossible.”

“She ordered your disappearance.”

Calla looked at her mother.

“Why?”

Drea's eyes filled with tears.

“Because she wasn't trying to steal the inheritance.”

Daniel frowned.

“Then what was she trying to do?”

Drea looked toward the underground tunnel.

“She was hiding the real heir.”

A long silence.

Then Drea whispered:

“Caleb isn't the second child.”
