Chapter 5 - THE PHOTO IN THE SAFEMarco survived.

But he could remember nothing about the attack.
Luca did not believe him.
Not because Marco was lying.
Because whatever happened had been designed to leave no memory behind.
Maya continued going to the baseball diamond.
That became Luca's strangest comfort.
The world around him was collapsing into questions.
Maya still cared about homework.
Tommy still complained that the baseballs were too old.
Elena still reminded the staff when someone forgot to deliver groceries.
Ordinary things.
They kept Luca anchored.
Until the day Maya found the photograph.
It was inside a storage cabinet beneath the porch.
Tommy had been looking for a new baseball.
Maya found a metal box behind a loose wooden panel.
They brought it to Luca.
"Is this yours?"
Luca looked at it.
He had never seen it before.
The lock was old.
Tommy suggested a screwdriver.
Luca called security.
The box was opened.
Inside was a photograph.
A newspaper clipping.
And a small brass key.
Luca picked up the photograph.
His breath stopped.
It showed him twelve years earlier.
Standing.
Smiling.
Beside him was Elena.
They were outside a small apartment building.
Luca remembered that summer.
He had deliberately disappeared from his family.
He had used another name.
For three months, he had lived like an ordinary man.
No guards.
No meetings.
No empire.
Just Elena.
It had been the happiest period of his life.
He had left because he believed the life was too dangerous for her.
He never knew she was pregnant.
He stared at the photograph.
On the back was a handwritten sentence.
HE KNEW ABOUT THE CHILD.
Luca went cold.
"Who wrote this?"
Elena entered the porch.
She saw the photograph.
Her face drained of color.
"Where did you get that?"
"Was this taken after I left?"
She nodded slowly.
"My sister had it."
"Your sister?"
"I told you I had one."
"She died before Maya was born."
Elena looked at the note.
"She sent me this."
"When?"
"Three months before she died."
Luca stared at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I never believed it."
He turned the photograph over again.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But the message was clear.
Someone knew Elena was pregnant.
Someone knew Luca was the father.
And someone had been watching.
Luca picked up the brass key.
"Do you know what this opens?"
Elena shook her head.
Tommy stepped forward.
"I do."
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed toward the far side of the estate.
"There is a locked room under the old guesthouse."
Luca frowned.
"How do you know?"
Tommy shrugged.
"I've been exploring."
Security searched the guesthouse.
The room existed.
It was hidden behind a false wall.
The brass key fit the lock.
Inside was a small surveillance station.
Old monitors.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Maps.
A file bearing Luca's name.
Another bearing Elena's.
And one more.
MAYA HARPER.
Luca opened it.
The first page contained a birth certificate.
The second contained school records.
The third contained photographs.
Hundreds.
Maya at the park.
Maya walking home.
Maya sleeping beside Elena.
Maya entering the estate.
Luca's hands began to shake.
Someone had been watching his daughter for years.
Then he found the final page.
A single sentence.
TARGET WILL BE APPROACHED AFTER PATERNITY CONFIRMATION.
Luca looked at Elena.
"She was never supposed to meet me."
Elena whispered:
"Then why did she?"
From the hallway came a sound.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Unhurried.
Someone was walking toward them.
Luca reached for the gun hidden beneath his chair.
The footsteps stopped outside the door.
A voice spoke.
"You shouldn't have opened that room."
May you like
Luca recognized it immediately.
Anthony.
