Chapter 9 - Adrian woke to darkness. His wrists were tied.

His mouth was dry.
Something metallic pressed against the back of his neck.
A voice whispered:
âDon't move.â
Adrian recognized it.
Marcus.
âYou drugged me.â
âYes.â
âEmma?â
âAlive.â
âDaniel?â
âAlive.â
âLily?â
Silence.
Adrian's heart slammed against his ribs.
âWhere is she?â
âSafe.â
âYou said that already.â
Marcus pulled Adrian upright.
âYou need to understand what I'm about to tell you.â
âThen untie me.â
âI can't.â
âWhy?â
âBecause if I do, you will kill the wrong person.â
Adrian stopped.
âWhat does that mean?â
A light turned on.
The room was not Archive Zero.
It was the underground chamber beneath the mansion.
Emma and Daniel were tied to chairs.
Both conscious.
And standing between them was a man wearing an expensive black suit.
Victor Hale.
Alive.
He looked older than Adrian remembered.
But unmistakably Victor.
Beside him stood another man.
Adrian.
Or someone who looked exactly like him.
The second man's hair was slightly longer.
His expression colder.
But the resemblance was terrifying.
âWho is he?â
Victor smiled.
âYour family's insurance policy.â
The double stepped forward.
âYou've spent your whole life believing you inherited this empire.â
Adrian stared.
âYou want my company?â
âNo.â
âThen what?â
âThe name.â
Adrian frowned.
The man smiled.
âMy name.â
Michael stepped from the shadows.
Adrian turned.
âYou said you were Michael.â
âI am.â
Then he pointed at the other man.
âAnd he is the one who wants to become Adrian Moretti.â
The double smiled.
âI already have.â
Adrian stared.
Victor placed a file on the table.
âYour biometric records have been duplicated.â
Adrian looked down.
Fingerprints.
Retinal scans.
Blood type.
Voice samples.
Everything.
âHow?â
âSix years ago.â
Daniel spoke.
âVictor didn't take me because of the ledger.â
Adrian looked at him.
âHe took me because I knew the replacement program existed.â
âThe what?â
Victor answered.
âIdentity substitution.â
Adrian laughed bitterly.
âYou expect me to believe someone can replace me?â
Victor nodded.
âNot someone.â
He pointed at the double.
âSomeone who was raised to.â
Adrian looked at the man's face.
âWho is he?â
Victor's smile disappeared.
âMatthew.â
Adrian froze.
âMatthew who?â
âMatthew Moretti.â
Michael whispered:
âOur father had him before you.â
Adrian's thoughts collided.
Three brothers.
Michael.
Matthew.
Two hidden sons.
Victor continued.
âYour father believed the Moretti name needed a spare.â
Adrian stared.
âA spare.â
âA replacement.â
âWhat happened to Matthew?â
Victor looked at the double.
âHe was trained.â
Adrian studied him.
âFor what?â
âTo become you.â
Emma suddenly spoke.
âAdrianâŠâ
He turned.
Her face was pale.
âI know him.â
The double looked at her.
âYou don't.â
âI do.â
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
âYou were there the night Daniel disappeared.â
Matthew smiled.
âYou remember.â
Adrian turned toward Emma.
âHow?â
âHe was the man I saw in the hallway.â
The child.
The voice.
The face.
Everything connected.
Lily had said the man looked like Adrian.
Because he did.
Victor stepped closer.
âHere's the part you haven't understood.â
He opened another file.
âDaniel discovered the network six years ago. Matteo wanted out. Michael tried to expose it. I was ordered to eliminate them both.â
Michael shook his head.
âYou failed.â
Victor smiled.
âNot entirely.â
He pointed at Daniel.
âDaniel survived.â
Then at Michael.
âMichael disappeared.â
Then Adrian.
âAnd you kept living.â
Adrian stared.
âWhere is my brother Matteo?â
Victor didn't answer.
Daniel did.
âHe's not dead.â
Adrian froze.
Victor's smile returned.
âHe's the reason this started.â
Adrian's voice became a whisper.
âWhere is Matteo?â
A door opened behind them.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
A man entered the room.
Older.
Gray at the temples.
A scar along his cheek.
Adrian stared.
He knew that face.
He had buried it eight years ago.
Matteo Moretti looked at his brother.
And said:
âYou should have listened when I told you to stay out of the east wing.â
Adrian's blood went cold.
Emma began crying.
Michael lowered his head.
Victor stepped back.
And Matteo looked at Adrian with an expression that contained no affection at all.
âNow,â he said.
May you like
âWe can finally discuss why I let you think I was dead.â
