Chapter 3 - The hidden staircase descended beneath the mansion like a throat.Stone walls.

Black iron railing.
No cameras.
No lights except the narrow emergency strips embedded along the steps.
Adrian went first.
Marcus followed.
Two security men remained behind with Emma and Lily.
Every instinct Adrian had developed over twenty years told him this was a trap.
He went anyway.
At the bottom, a steel door stood open.
The number 917 had been scratched into its surface.
Adrian touched it.
Cold.
Too cold.
Inside was a room the mansion blueprints did not show.
One table.
Three chairs.
A ceiling light.
A wall covered with photographs.
Adrian stopped breathing.
Emma.
Daniel.
Lily.
Adrian himself.
Matteo.
Victor Hale.
Hundreds of images.
Some were recent.
Some were years old.
Some were taken inside the mansion.
His bedroom.
His office.
The kitchen.
The staff hall.
Even the room where Lily slept.
Marcus whispered.
âSomeone's been watching this house.â
Adrian walked to the wall.
A photograph showed Emma carrying Lily through the front entrance.
The date was printed in the corner.
Three months ago.
Another showed Emma arriving at a grocery store.
Another showed Lily sitting alone on a park bench.
Then Adrian saw a photograph of himself sleeping.
His eyes hardened.
âThis wasn't surveillance from outside.â
Marcus said nothing.
Adrian pointed at the photograph.
âWhoever took this was inside the house.â
A faint buzzing sound came from beneath the table.
Marcus crouched.
âCamera.â
He lifted a small black device.
âLive feed.â
Adrian looked around.
âHow many?â
âSeveral.â
Marcus pulled one from beneath the lamp.
Then another behind a vent.
Then another hidden inside a smoke detector.
Adrian felt anger spreading through him.
Not the hot kind.
The cold kind.
The kind that made decisions permanent.
âWho has access to these systems?â
Marcus looked at him.
âMe.â
The words hung there.
Adrian's head slowly turned.
Marcus raised both hands.
âNot me, sir. I mean my security credentials.â
âWho else can use them?â
âThree administrators.â
âNames.â
âMe. Nathan Cole from IT. And Victor Hale's old master account.â
Adrian stared.
âVictor Hale died eight years ago.â
âYes.â
âAnd his account is still active?â
Marcus didn't answer.
That was enough.
Adrian reached for the computer terminal.
The screen was already awake.
One file was open.
PROJECT ELEVEN FIFTY-NINE.
He clicked it.
The file contained dates.
Times.
Names.
Every time Adrian had entered or left the mansion.
Every time Emma had entered or left the staff wing.
Every meal.
Every delivery.
Every medical appointment.
Lily's birth date.
Daniel's disappearance.
Matteo's death.
And one recurring line:
Subject remains unaware.
Adrian's voice was quiet.
âSubject?â
Marcus stared at the screen.
âMaybe you.â
Adrian scrolled.
The last entry had been added forty-seven minutes earlier.
11:59 PM.
EVENT CONFIRMED.
LILY CARTER ENTERS EAST WING.
Adrian stopped.
The system had known Lily was coming before she reached his door.
Someone had planned tonight.
The knocking wasn't random.
The girl hadn't simply wandered to Adrian's room.
Someone had sent her.
A second file opened automatically.
Video.
Adrian clicked play.
The footage showed the staff corridor.
11:51 p.m.
Emma walked into frame carrying a tray.
She looked exhausted.
She stopped.
Turned toward something off-camera.
Her lips moved.
Then she dropped the tray.
The video jumped.
11:56.
Emma was dragging herself toward her bedroom.
11:58.
Lily opened the bedroom door.
11:59.
The screen went black.
Adrian stared.
âWhy did it cut out?â
Marcus checked the system.
âSomeone manually disabled the cameras.â
âWhen?â
âExactly 11:59.â
âFrom where?â
Marcus typed quickly.
His expression changed.
âInside the east wing.â
Adrian stepped back.
âWho?â
Marcus hesitated.
Then looked up.
âYour bedroom terminal.â
Adrian stared at him.
His bedroom.
The device connected to the surveillance system was hidden behind a painting.
He had never touched it.
Adrian walked out of the room.
They climbed the stairs.
When they reached his bedroom, everything looked untouched.
His bed.
Desk.
Books.
The painting on the wall.
Adrian moved it.
A small security console was mounted behind it.
The screen displayed one message.
WELCOME BACK, ADRIAN.
Then the screen changed.
A live camera feed appeared.
Adrian's own bedroom.
The angle was from above his bed.
He could see himself standing there.
Marcus standing behind him.
Then Adrian noticed something else.
The camera wasn't showing the room exactly as it was.
It showed the room thirty seconds earlier.
A delayed feed.
Someone was controlling it remotely.
Adrian reached for the console.
The screen suddenly displayed another message.
YOU WERE NEVER THE OWNER OF THIS HOUSE.
Adrian stared.
A countdown appeared.
Marcus stepped closer.
âSir.â
The screen went black.
Then the bedroom door slammed shut.
Locked.
Marcus pulled his weapon.
Adrian turned.
The lock had engaged electronically.
âOpen it.â
Marcus tried.
Nothing.
Then a voice came through the bedroom speakers.
A male voice.
Calm.
Almost amused.
âYou should have left Emma alone.â
Adrian's blood ran cold.
âWho are you?â
âYou already know.â
âDaniel?â
A pause.
Then a laugh.
âNo.â
The voice changed.
The speaker crackled.
âIâm the reason Daniel survived.â
Adrian stared at the ceiling.
âWhat do you want?â
âI want the thing your family stole.â
âWhat thing?â
âThe truth.â
The lights died.
Something hissed from the vents.
Marcus covered his mouth.
Adrian smelled smoke.
Not fire.
Gas.
âMask!â
Marcus pulled an emergency respirator from his belt.
Adrian grabbed another.
Then the speaker whispered one final sentence.
âAsk your brother why room 917 was built.â
The system shut down.
A second later, something exploded beneath the floor.
The bedroom shook.
The carpet split open.
Adrian fell backward.
May you like
And from the darkness below, a man's hand reached up through the broken floorboards.
