Chapter 15 - WHEN THE DEAD COME HOMEAdrian fired.

Nicholas shoved me aside.

The bullet struck the wall.

Marco returned fire.

Everyone scattered.

Victor ran.

Grace tackled him.

Vanessa pulled Peter behind a concrete pillar.

Adrian disappeared through a side door.

I chased him.

We tore through the underground corridor.

He moved quickly for an old man.

Too quickly.

I caught him near the elevator.

He turned.

“You finally understand.”

“What?”

“Your father didn't create the registry.”

“You said he inherited it.”

“I lied.”

“Who created it?”

Adrian smiled.

“Your grandfather.”

My blood froze.

“My grandfather died before I was born.”

“Officially.”

There it was again.

The word that had poisoned every part of my life.

Officially.

He continued:

“Your family has been rewriting its own history for three generations.”

“And you?”

“I was born outside it.”

“Then why help them?”

“Because I wanted what they stole from my family.”

“What did they steal?”

“My sister.”

I stared at him.

“Who?”

Adrian's eyes filled with something between rage and grief.

“Elena Russo.”

I froze.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“She was your sister?”

“Yes.”

“And Peter?”

“My nephew.”

I lowered my weapon.

“You kidnapped him.”

“I protected him.”

“By killing people?”

“They killed first.”

“Grace?”

“Protecting the archive.”

“Lucia?”

“Too dangerous to survive.”

“Vanessa?”

“Collateral.”

“You've destroyed everyone.”

“No.”

He smiled.

“I exposed them.”

The elevator opened.

Peter stepped into the corridor.

He was holding the brass key.

“Uncle Dominic.”

Adrian looked at him.

His face softened.

“Peter.”

The boy stared.

“Are you my uncle too?”

Adrian couldn't answer.

Peter walked toward him.

Then stopped.

“My mom said you were good.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“She remembered me.”

Elena nodded.

Adrian lowered his weapon.

Police sirens echoed from above.

Everything was ending.

Or so I thought.

Adrian handed me a drive.

“This is the final archive.”

“What does it contain?”

“Everything your family erased.”

I took it.

“What do you want?”

He smiled.

“Nothing.”

“That isn't true.”

“I want the truth to survive.”

Then he stepped backward.

Police officers flooded the corridor.

Adrian dropped his weapon.

He surrendered.

For the first time in twenty years, I felt the weight inside my chest begin to loosen.

The registry was exposed.

The Bellini network collapsed.

Victor was arrested.

Lucia was taken into custody.

The old accounts were frozen.

The hidden children were identified.

Names were restored.

Families learned truths they had been denied for decades.

But the Moretti empire was finished.

I stood on the roof of the old headquarters at sunrise.

Nicholas stood beside me.

He still had a bandage around his shoulder.

“You're giving it all away?”

“Yes.”

“All of it?”

“Almost.”

He laughed.

“What are you keeping?”

I looked down.

Peter was in the courtyard with Elena and Vanessa.

Grace stood nearby.

She had survived, but she'd chosen to disappear after giving investigators everything she knew.

I wasn't sure whether I trusted her.

Maybe trust wasn't supposed to return in one dramatic moment.

Maybe it was rebuilt slowly.

Like a house after fire.

Nicholas looked over the city.

“We're free.”

I shook my head.

“Not yet.”

He raised an eyebrow.

I handed him the drive Adrian had given me.

He plugged it into a laptop.

The screen opened.

At first, nothing.

Then one file.

PROJECT SECOND SON.

Nicholas stopped breathing.

“What?”

He opened it.

A photograph appeared.

Our father.

Our grandfather.

And a third boy.

Much younger.

Standing beside them.

The same black cross around his neck.

Nicholas stared.

“That isn't possible.”

“Who is he?”

He zoomed in.

His face changed.

“I know him.”

“Who?”

“Nico.”

I frowned.

“You are Nico.”

“No.”

He pointed at the photograph.

“He was older than me.”

I stared.

A second document opened.

SECOND SON STATUS: ACTIVE.

Then another.

LOCATION: UNKNOWN.

Then a final message.

PROJECT CONTINUES UNDER NEW CUSTODIAN.

I felt cold.

The registry was destroyed.

The empire was collapsing.

The Bellinis were exposed.

Our family secrets were finally coming into daylight.

But someone had inherited the system.

Someone who had been planning this long before I woke up in that hospital room.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then a little boy's voice whispered:

“Uncle Dominic?”

I looked at Peter.

He was still in the courtyard.

The voice continued.

“I found another black cross.”

My blood ran cold.

“Where?”

A pause.

Then:

“Under your mother's grave.”

The call ended.

I stared at Nicholas.

He stared back.

Neither of us spoke.

Because our mother's grave was in a cemetery we'd visited for twenty years.

And no one had ever told us there was another child.

Another son.

Another secret.

Another name buried beneath the Moretti family.

I looked toward the rising sun.

For twenty years, I had thought the fire was the thing that destroyed my family.

I had been wrong.

The fire had only burned away the lies we could see.

The real story had been buried deeper.

May you like

And somewhere beneath my mother's grave...

someone had been waiting for us to come home.
