Chapter 14 - THE FIRST FAMILYWe found Grace's car abandoned twelve miles from the city.

No blood.
No signs of struggle.
Only a note on the dashboard.
FOLLOW THE RIVER.
Nicholas wanted to go alone.
I refused.
Vanessa came.
Peter stayed with Elena.
Marco brought six men.
We followed the river into the industrial district.
At its end was an abandoned children's hospital.
The building had been closed for thirty years.
According to public records, it had never existed.
We entered.
The basement elevator still worked.
It took us down six floors.
Six.
Not one.
Not two.
Six.
The doors opened.
At the end of the corridor was a steel gate.
Behind it sat a room filled with old photographs.
Children.
Hundreds.
Different names.
Same symbol.
A black cross.
Peter's necklace.
Nicholas stared at them.
“That's where we came from.”
I turned.
“What?”
“This was the first facility.”
“For what?”
“Identity transfers.”
Adrian looked horrified.
“The registry started here.”
A voice answered from the darkness.
“Yes.”
Grace stepped forward.
She wore no nurse uniform now.
Only a black coat.
Behind her stood several armed men.
And beside her...
an elderly man.
My father's oldest partner.
Dr. Victor Hale.
I knew him.
He had treated my family for decades.
He smiled.
“The children were never the point.”
“What was?”
“Control.”
He explained everything.
The registry had begun as a way to protect powerful families.
Then it became a market.
Children were relocated.
Names changed.
Inheritance redirected.
Witnesses disappeared.
And the Moretti family eventually became the largest operator.
My father tried to stop it.
Lucia took over.
Nicholas discovered the records.
Grace's father designed the original system.
And Grace inherited the access keys.
“You killed the hospital nurse,” I said.
Grace nodded.
“She was about to expose me.”
“You took Peter.”
“I protected him.”
“You kidnapped him.”
“He is the last bloodline outside the registry.”
Victor Hale stepped forward.
“Peter can authenticate the original archive.”
“For what?”
“To unlock the real inheritance.”
I stared.
“What inheritance?”
He smiled.
“The Moretti reserve.”
“What reserve?”
“An offshore fortune.”
“How much?”
He named a number.
I almost laughed.
Hundreds of billions.
Money hidden behind trusts, shell corporations, private accounts.
The money was never meant for Dominic.
Or Nicholas.
Or Vanessa.
It was meant for the children listed in the registry.
But someone had been stealing from it for decades.
“Who?”
Victor looked at Grace.
She nodded.
“Your father.”
I thought of Maria's confession.
My father wasn't the mastermind.
Maybe he had become the thief.
Victor continued:
“He took the children's inheritance.”
“And left them with nothing.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Power.”
I looked at Grace.
“You want the money.”
“No.”
“Then what?”
She looked at Peter.
“Justice.”
“That word gets expensive.”
She smiled.
“You think this ends with money?”
She pressed a button.
A screen appeared.
A list.
The first names were Moretti.
Then Bellini.
Then thousands of others.
At the bottom was mine.
But beside my name was a designation I had never seen.
PRIMARY CUSTODIAN.
I looked at Nicholas.
“What is that?”
He answered quietly:
“Dad made you the final guardian.”
“Guardian of what?”
“The children.”
The room went silent.
Victor raised his gun.
Then Peter shouted from behind us.
“Don't shoot him!”
Everyone turned.
Peter had entered with Elena and Marco's men.
I stared.
“How did you get here?”
Elena smiled.
“Because you weren't going to leave without me.”
Grace looked at Peter.
Then dropped her weapon.
“You have no idea what you've inherited.”
Peter walked toward the screen.
He placed his hand against the scanner.
The machine activated.
Every account.
Every file.
Every hidden trust.
Unlocked.
Victor stared.
“No.”
The system announced:
PRIMARY HEIR CONFIRMED.
Peter looked at me.
Then smiled.
“Uncle Dominic.”
The screen behind him changed.
A final file opened.
It contained one sentence.
THE REAL ENEMY IS NOT INSIDE THE FAMILY.
Then another line appeared.
HE IS THE MAN WHO MARRIED INTO IT.
Vanessa went pale.
I turned toward her.
She whispered:
“My father.”
But a voice behind us answered.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
Adrian Cole stepped out of the shadows.
Holding a gun.
May you like
And he smiled.
“The man who married into the family was me.”
