Chapter 13 - The Father Who Wasn't His FatherThe DNA Test That Changed Everything

The warehouse turned silent.

Roman looked at the agent.

"What did you say?"

The agent repeated:

"Victor Vale is not your biological father."

Roman stared.

Victor laughed softly.

"Finally."

I looked at Roman.

He seemed completely lost.

"Then who is?"

The agent removed a file.

"Adrian Cross."

Roman's face changed.

I knew the name.

Everyone in Chicago did.

Adrian Cross had built the company that became Vale Development.

He had disappeared thirty years earlier.

Presumed dead.

"That's impossible," Roman whispered.

The agent shook his head.

"No. What's impossible is the number of lies you were raised on."

He opened the file.

DNA comparisons.

Adrian Cross.

Roman Vale.

Match confirmed.

Martha had known.

Victor had known.

Ethan had known.

Roman wasn't a Vale by blood.

He was a Cross.

And the Cross family had founded the original trust that controlled the company.

That's why Victor needed Leo.

That's why Ethan created the inheritance.

The trust didn't belong to the Vale family.

It belonged to the Cross bloodline.

Roman looked at Victor.

"You stole my identity."

Victor smiled.

"We gave you a name powerful enough to survive."

"You murdered Ethan."

"Ethan discovered the truth."

Roman raised his weapon.

The federal agent stepped between them.

"We need him alive."

Roman stared at me.

"What does this have to do with Megan?"

The agent looked at me.

"Ethan didn't choose Megan because she was convenient."

"He chose her because she was the only person outside the family who had access to the original Cross records."

I shook my head.

"I worked in a restaurant."

"Before that?"

I couldn't remember.

The agent placed a photograph in front of me.

Me at nineteen.

Working in a legal office.

I stared.

"That's me."

"You were an intern in a law firm handling Cross family estates."

My mind flashed.

A basement archive.

A silver bracelet.

A man handing me a folder.

I remembered.

Adrian Cross.

He had told me:

"One day, someone will ask you where the original trust is."

I had forgotten because my memory had been manipulated after a car accident.

My mother had helped hide me.

Ethan had found me.

Then Leo was born.

The pieces finally aligned.

I hadn't accidentally discovered Roman.

Roman had accidentally rediscovered me.

And someone had spent years making sure neither of us remembered why we mattered.

David attempted to run.

Federal agents tackled him.

Victor reached for a hidden weapon.

Roman stopped him.

"Don't."

Victor looked at Roman.

"You'll never understand what I did for you."

Roman's voice was ice.

"You killed my brother."

Victor smiled.

"And I saved you from becoming him."

The agent stepped toward me.

"The original trust document is missing."

I looked at Leo.

He was holding the wooden box.

I remembered the key.

The false bottom.

The symbol.

I knelt beside him.

"Leo, where did Daddy show you this?"

He pointed toward the floor.

"Under the house."

"The warehouse?"

He nodded.

We found a loose floor panel.

Beneath it was a steel case.

Roman opened it.

Inside was the original trust.

And another document.

A handwritten confession from Adrian Cross.

The final line read:

The heir is not Roman.

The heir is Megan's son.

Roman stared.

I stared.

Leo stepped between us.

And for the first time, I understood why everyone had been hunting my child.

He wasn't worth sixty million dollars.

He was worth control of everything.
