Chapter 12 - The Boy in the Locked RoomLeo Was Never the Target

We found the location through one clue.

The wooden box.

The key.

The symbol.

Roman realized the mark wasn't just the Vale family crest.

It was an old railway symbol.

A private freight tunnel beneath the city.

David was using an abandoned warehouse near the river.

We entered through a side door.

No guards.

No cameras.

Too quiet.

Roman whispered:

"This is wrong."

We moved deeper.

Then we heard a child's voice.

"Mama?"

I nearly ran.

Roman caught my arm.

"Wait."

We listened.

"Leo?"

No answer.

Then a door opened at the end of the corridor.

Leo stood inside.

Alone.

I rushed toward him.

He threw his arms around me.

I kissed his face.

"Are you okay?"

"Yes."

"Where's the man who brought you?"

Leo pointed deeper into the warehouse.

"He said he wanted the box."

My stomach dropped.

"What box?"

"The wooden one."

Roman looked at me.

"He knows about it."

Leo pulled something from his pocket.

A small folded piece of paper.

"He gave me this."

I opened it.

It was a drawing.

A circle.

Three vertical lines.

And a little stick figure beneath it.

At the bottom, Leo had written:

DADDY.

I stared.

"Who taught you to draw that?"

Leo frowned.

"Daddy."

My heart stopped.

"Leo, what daddy?"

"The one in the pictures."

Roman stepped closer.

"What pictures?"

Leo pointed toward a crate.

Inside were photographs.

Hundreds.

Of me.

Of Leo.

Of Ethan.

Of Roman.

Of Laura.

Someone had been monitoring all of us for years.

Then I saw one photograph that made my blood turn to ice.

It showed me holding baby Leo outside the hospital.

Standing ten feet behind me was Victor Vale.

Alive.

Watching.

The date was the day Leo was born.

Roman stared.

"So he wasn't missing."

I looked at him.

"He was there the whole time."

Another photograph showed David handing my mother an envelope.

Then another.

Martha.

David.

Victor.

All together.

The conspiracy suddenly looked much larger than one family.

Then we heard applause.

Victor stepped out from the darkness.

David stood beside him.

"Congratulations," Victor said.

"You found the archive."

Roman raised his gun.

Victor smiled.

"Still angry."

"You kidnapped my nephew."

"No."

Victor looked at Leo.

"We rescued him from the wrong life."

"What do you want?"

Victor's attention shifted to me.

"You."

I froze.

"Why me?"

"Because Ethan left you something."

I shook my head.

"I don't have anything."

Victor smiled.

"You do."

He nodded toward the photographs.

"You just don't remember."

My stomach turned.

Then he said:

"When you were pregnant, Ethan told you something."

I searched my memory.

There was one thing.

One sentence.

Ethan had once said:

If anything happens to me, never let them know you remember.

I had assumed he was talking about our relationship.

But now I understood.

I had forgotten something.

Something important.

Victor stepped closer.

"Your memory was never as broken as they made you believe."

My head began pounding.

Suddenly a flash came.

A hospital room.

Ethan.

A nurse.

A second baby.

A silver bracelet.

Someone taking Leo away.

I stumbled.

Roman caught me.

"What did you see?"

I looked at him.

"Two babies."

His face changed.

I whispered:

"I remember."

Victor smiled.

"Good."

Then the warehouse doors exploded open.

A team of armed men stormed inside.

But they weren't Victor's men.

They wore federal badges.

One pointed directly at Roman.

"Roman Vale, step away from the child."

Roman slowly raised his hands.

The agent looked at me.

"Megan Bennett, you're not under arrest."

He glanced at Leo.

"You're the protected witness."

I stared.

"Protected from whom?"

The agent looked at Victor.

"From him."

Victor smiled.

May you like

Then the agent said something that made every secret in the room seem even darker.

"Because Victor Vale isn't Roman's father."
