Chapter 6 - I didn't tell anyone what Margaret had said.Not Daniel.

Not Marcus.

And certainly not Julian.

Because I had finally learned the most important rule of survival:

When everyone around you is lying, silence becomes a weapon.

I spent the next two days digging through everything I could find about Julian.

Our marriage.

His business.

His old employment records.

His family.

And eventually, I found something.

Before he met me, Julian had worked for a company called Northbridge Advisory.

The managing director?

Ethan Cole.

I stared at the screen.

Julian had told me he had worked for a small investment firm.

He never mentioned Ethan.

Not once.

Then I found a second connection.

Chloe had worked at the same firm.

My best friend.

My husband.

Ethan.

All three were connected before I ever met them.

I felt sick.

I called Marcus.

“I'm ready to tell you something.”

He arrived within an hour.

I handed him the documents.

He read them silently.

“Did Julian know you had this?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Then he looked at me.

“You need to leave the hotel.”

“Why?”

“Because someone knows you've been searching.”

“Who?”

He turned his phone around.

A photograph showed a man standing in the hotel parking garage.

Ethan.

My blood ran cold.

“He followed me?”

“Yes.”

“What do we do?”

“Move.”

That night, Marcus took me to a safe apartment.

I couldn't sleep.

At 2:13 a.m., there was a knock.

I reached for the door.

Marcus grabbed my arm.

“Don't.”

The knocking stopped.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A message.

YOU TOOK THE BOX.

My heart raced.

Another message arrived.

PUT IT BACK.

I stared at the screen.

Marcus read over my shoulder.

“What box?” he asked.

“The blue one.”

His expression changed.

“You never told me about it.”

“I didn't trust anyone.”

“Good instinct.”

Then a third message arrived.

YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR GRANDFATHER DID.

A fourth.

BUT YOUR HUSBAND DOES.

I looked at Marcus.

“Why would Julian know?”

“We find out.”

He arranged an emergency meeting with Daniel and a forensic accountant.

By morning, we discovered something buried in Julian's financial records.

For the last six months, large sums of money had been moved through offshore accounts.

But one account was different.

It received regular payments.

The beneficiary name wasn't Julian.

It was Chloe Bennett.

I stared at the amount.

$15,000 a month.

For nearly a year.

I felt something inside me collapse.

“You were paying her.”

Marcus asked quietly:

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Could she have been working for him?”

I looked away.

Chloe had been my friend since college.

She had stood beside me at my wedding.

She had visited Leo in the hospital.

She had cried with me.

She had promised me she would never leave me alone.

Now I wondered whether she had been watching me instead.

I called her.

She answered immediately.

“Clara?”

“Did Julian pay you?”

Silence.

Then:

“What are you talking about?”

“I know about the transfers.”

“Those are personal.”

“Fifteen thousand dollars a month?”

She didn't answer.

“Did you know about the house?”

Nothing.

“Chloe.”

Her voice changed.

“You need to stop.”

“Why?”

“Because you're hurting yourself.”

“You're lying.”

“I didn't want any of this.”

“Any of what?”

She started crying.

For a moment, the old Chloe appeared.

The woman who had held my hand in the ICU.

The woman I trusted.

“Please,” she whispered. “You're asking questions that should stay buried.”

“Did Julian kill my son?”

She went completely silent.

Then she said:

“No.”

I nearly collapsed with relief.

But before I could speak, she added:

“Not directly.”

The line went dead.

I called back.

No answer.

I looked at Marcus.

“What does that mean?”

He had already picked up his phone.

“We find her.”

Then another call came through.

Daniel.

His voice was tight.

“Clara, we've got a major problem.”

“What happened?”

“Your house was sold.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Not legally.”

“Then what do you mean?”

“Someone has transferred the property into a trust.”

I couldn't breathe.

“Under whose name?”

May you like

Daniel said:

“Chloe Bennett.”
