Chapter 10 - We returned to my house under police protection.Julian wasn't there.

The living room looked almost exactly as I had left it.
That made it worse.
My son's shoes were still beside the stairs.
His drawing was still on the refrigerator.
A cup with his name on it sat near the sink.
I had spent years thinking this house was safe.
Now every room felt like a crime scene.
I stood beneath the staircase.
There it was.
The door.
Small.
Painted white.
Locked.
I inserted the brass key.
It turned.
Marcus stood behind me.
The door opened with a long creak.
A narrow staircase descended into darkness.
“Your house has a basement,” Marcus said.
“My house has a secret.”
We went down.
At the bottom was a concrete room.
Shelves lined the walls.
There were old boxes.
Documents.
Photographs.
One large metal cabinet.
I opened the first drawer.
Property records.
Bank transfers.
Old legal agreements.
The second drawer contained business contracts.
The third?
Photographs.
My grandfather.
Henry Cole.
Julian's father.
I froze.
Julian's father had been in these records decades ago.
Marcus examined a contract.
“This is the original company agreement.”
“What company?”
“Sterling-Cole Development.”
I stared.
“Why did my grandfather keep this hidden?”
Marcus flipped the page.
Because of an ownership dispute.
Your grandfather held majority control.
Henry had attempted to take the company.
The case went to court.
But there was more.
One final agreement.
A settlement.
It transferred a valuable parcel of land to Clara's grandmother.
That parcel was the property beneath our house.
I looked up.
“My grandmother owned the land legally.”
“Yes.”
“But why were they after it?”
Marcus pointed at an attached map.
The property wasn't just residential.
It sat directly above a long-term commercial development corridor.
The land was worth more than I had ever imagined.
Millions.
But that still didn't explain the hospital.
Then Marcus opened another drawer.
There was a folder labeled:
SUCCESSION.
Inside was a document from my grandmother.
It said:
Should any descendant attempt to acquire this property through deception, the entire archive shall be transferred to state investigators.
I stared.
“She expected this.”
“She knew someone would come.”
I turned the page.
Another note was attached.
To Clara:
Trust no man who arrives asking about the house.
My throat tightened.
Grandma had known.
Maybe not Julian specifically.
But she'd known someone would try.
Then we found the final piece.
A handwritten ledger.
Payments.
Dates.
Names.
And one name appeared repeatedly.
Julian Sterling.
But not just as recipient.
As payer.
There were payments to Ethan.
To Chloe.
To a physician.
To a hospital contractor.
And one final payment scheduled for two days from now.
Recipient:
North Harbor Surgical Center.
Amount:
$75,000.
Marcus looked at me.
“That's not a small payment.”
“What is North Harbor?”
He checked.
“Private surgical facility.”
“Why would Julian pay them?”
He scrolled.
“There's an appointment scheduled.”
Under the appointment details was my name.
My blood froze.
Date:
Two days from now.
Procedure:
Emergency abdominal surgery.
I stared at the screen.
“I don't need surgery.”
Marcus's expression hardened.
“You're not scheduled for surgery.”
“Then who scheduled it?”
The answer appeared underneath.
Attending physician:
Dr. Samuel Cross.
I knew that name.
He had been one of Leo's doctors.
I took a step back.
“No.”
Marcus caught my arm.
“What?”
“Dr. Cross treated Leo.”
We rushed upstairs.
Daniel called the hospital.
They confirmed something horrifying.
A surgical referral had been submitted in my name.
My insurance had authorized it.
The procedure was scheduled.
I had never requested it.
Marcus looked at me.
“They're moving faster.”
“How?”
He pointed at the ledger.
“Someone paid them in advance.”
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Then a man's voice whispered:
“You should have stayed in the hotel.”
The line went dead.
Seconds later, the front door opened.
Police drew their weapons.
A man ran across the hallway.
Marcus chased him.
There was a crash.
Then silence.
Marcus returned holding an envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Me.
Sleeping in my hotel room.
Taken from inside.

On the back was a handwritten sentence.
NEXT TIME, WE WON'T MISS.
