Chapter 8 - The Blue DoorThe basement entrance was hidden behind a wall panel.

The door was painted blue.
It opened with a key found in Victor's office.
Inside was a narrow corridor.
The air was cold.
There were cameras along the walls.
And photographs.
Dozens of them.
People who had been watched.
Investigated.
Targeted.
At the end of the corridor was a room containing computer servers.
An investigator searched the system.
We found names.
Addresses.
Financial records.
Property valuations.
Everything.
Then we found Skylar's file.
I opened it.
Her profile included her school schedule.
Friends.
Teachers.
Medical records.
Photographs.
And a section titled:
EMOTIONAL LEVERAGE
Underneath were notes about her relationship with me.
Her fears.
Her habits.
The things that comforted her.
I felt sick.
Then another file appeared.
CHARLOTTE — FINAL COMPLIANCE PLAN
The plan described the dinner.
The financial blockade.
The family conflict.
Then the kidnapping.
Everything.
Except one detail.
The final step was labeled:
MANDATORY PROPERTY TRANSFER
It hadn't happened yet.
Because they still needed my signature.
I asked the investigator:
“Where is Skylar?”
He looked at another screen.
A location tracker showed activity.
Thirty miles away.
An isolated property.
We moved immediately.
At the property, there was no one inside.
No Skylar.
No Victor.
No Brandon.
But we found fresh footprints.
A vehicle had recently left.
Then an investigator found a hidden compartment beneath the floor.
Inside was another USB drive.
And a handwritten note.
Charlotte, if you're reading this, they found me.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
Brandon.
He had been trying to warn me.
The note continued.
There is something you don't know about Victor.
Then:
He didn't recruit Gertrude.
I stopped.
Below it:
Gertrude recruited him.
I stared at the page.
That made no sense.
Until another paragraph.
Seven years ago, Mom lost everything. She owed Victor money. Instead of paying him, she offered him a business arrangement.
I read faster.
Gertrude had originally partnered with Victor.
She identified vulnerable property owners.
Victor supplied financing.
They split the profits.
Then Brandon became involved.
But there was one thing Gertrude never told Victor.
She had created a private trust.
A trust containing shares in several properties.
Including mine.
My house.
Brandon had discovered the trust.
Then everything changed.
He wanted the property for himself.
Gertrude wanted it too.
Victor wanted the profit.
The three of them had started fighting each other.
I wasn't the only target.
They were also betraying one another.
Then the final page revealed something devastating.
Skylar is not the reason they took her.
I froze.
She accidentally saw the ledger.
“What ledger?”
The investigator looked up.
“Charlotte.”
He pointed to a hidden folder.
Inside was a list of payments.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
Then I saw something impossible.
A payment from Victor to someone with access to my bank.
Someone inside my own workplace.
Someone who had been monitoring my salary.
My boss.
I stared at the name.
This wasn't a family conspiracy anymore.
It went beyond the house.
Beyond Brandon.
Beyond Gertrude.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice whispered:
“You've opened the wrong file.”
“Where is my daughter?”
“Alive.”
“Who are you?”
He paused.
Then said:
“Ask your father.”
My blood ran cold.
“My father is dead.”
The man laughed softly.
“No.”
The line went dead.
I stared at the phone.
My father had been buried six years ago.
I knew that.
I had attended his funeral.
May you like
I had seen the casket.
But suddenly, for the first time in six years, I wondered whether the man in that grave had really been my father.
