Chapter 6 - Gertrude's SecretI couldn't sleep.

Every memory of Gertrude now looked different.

Every family dinner.

Every complaint about money.

Every conversation about the house.

She wasn't just controlling.

She was calculating.

The next morning, Daniel arranged a meeting with the investigator.

We needed to understand why Gertrude wanted my property.

Then a bank record appeared.

A payment from an account controlled by Gertrude to Oakridge Holdings.

$32,000.

Another payment.

$18,500.

Then another.

$47,000.

She wasn't simply aware of the scheme.

She was financing it.

Daniel looked up.

“There's another issue.”

“What?”

“Gertrude isn't the final beneficiary.”

“Who is?”

He showed me a trust document.

I read the name.

Then I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was absurd.

The beneficiary was Brandon Reynolds.

My husband.

If the transfer succeeded, Brandon would eventually control the company receiving the property.

“So he planned all of this?”

“Apparently.”

I wanted to believe there was another explanation.

There wasn't.

The investigator then told me something strange.

“Gertrude has been visiting a storage facility in Riverside.”

“What does she keep there?”

“We don't know.”

I went there with a warrant-backed search team.

Inside locker 314 were boxes of documents.

Old bank statements.

Photocopies of passports.

Property records.

And dozens of files.

Not just mine.

Other families.

I flipped through them.

One family had lost their home after a failed business.

Another elderly couple had entered foreclosure.

Another woman had disappeared from the records after a property dispute.

Every file had the same structure.

Financial pressure.

Debt.

Legal paperwork.

Property transfer.

Then resale.

Gertrude had records going back seven years.

Daniel looked horrified.

“This is organized.”

“Yes.”

“How many properties?”

He counted quickly.

Thirty-two.

Then thirty-three.

The final file was marked:

REYNOLDS RESIDENCE — PRIORITY

My hands trembled.

Inside was a timeline.

Every event from the past year.

Brandon's spending.

My late nights.

Skylar's school schedule.

My financial accounts.

Even our family arguments.

Someone had been documenting us like a military operation.

Then I found a note.

Phase Four: Child isolation.

My eyes stopped.

Below it:

Separate child from target psychologically. Create perception that resources belong elsewhere. Increase target's emotional exhaustion.

I read it twice.

The instant noodles.

The expensive dinners.

Skylar's exclusion.

It had been deliberate.

The purpose wasn't only to hurt her.

It was to destabilize me.

Then I found something else.

A handwritten sentence.

Mother believes Charlotte will surrender the property voluntarily after discovering Brandon's betrayal.

I whispered:

“She thought I'd leave.”

Daniel nodded.

“Probably.”

Then the door slammed.

Everyone looked up.

An investigator rushed toward the entrance.

A man was running across the parking lot.

He had been waiting outside.

He disappeared between two buildings.

They searched the area.

Nothing.

But left behind was a phone.

A cheap burner.

It contained one unread message.

You are closer than you should be.

Then the phone buzzed again.

A video file appeared.

I opened it.

The screen showed Skylar.

She was sitting in a room I didn't recognize.

My breath stopped.

Her hands were tied.

And behind her stood Brandon.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Charlotte, listen carefully.”

I could barely breathe.

“We never wanted to hurt her.”

I whispered:

“Where is my daughter?”

Brandon continued.

“You have until midnight.”

“For what?”

“Bring the USB.”

I froze.

“The original files. All of them.”

“And then?”

Brandon's face tightened.

“You get Skylar back.”

The video ended.

I turned to Daniel.

He was already reaching for his phone.

But before he could speak, another message arrived.

Come alone.

Then a location.

An abandoned warehouse.

May you like

And a final sentence:

Tell the police, and you will never see your daughter again.
