Chapter 9: Subject Zero

The door opened slowly.

Too slowly.

Like the room behind it was not just waiting for us.

Like it was remembering us.

A cold stream of air moved through the hallway.

The smell was different from the rest of the facility.

The hidden rooms smelled abandoned.

Dust.

Old metal.

Decay.

But this room smelled alive.

Sterile.

Maintained.

Used.

The words on the glass door stared back at me.

SUBJECT ZERO

My name was not there.

My badge number was not there.

Just those two words.

Subject.

Zero.

The beginning.

Leo stood behind me.

He didn't want to look inside.

I understood why.

He had spent his entire life being treated like a number.

Now he was watching me discover that I had once been one too.

"Jason..."

Sarah's voice was quiet.

"Are you sure you want to go in there?"

No.

The honest answer was no.

Every instinct told me to walk away.

Some doors are dangerous because of what is behind them.

Others are dangerous because they reveal what you already are.

But I had spent years protecting people from the truth.

Now I needed to face mine.

I opened the door.

The room was smaller than I expected.

That surprised me.

After everything we had seen, I expected some massive laboratory.

Rows of machines.

Advanced technology.

Something that looked like the birthplace of a nightmare.

Instead...

It looked almost ordinary.

A chair.

A desk.

A computer.

A wall covered with photographs.

I stepped closer.

And immediately wished I hadn't.

The photographs were of me.

Not one.

Hundreds.

Me as a teenager.

Me in college.

Me during police training.

Me becoming an officer.

Every important moment of my life.

Someone had been watching me for years.

But that wasn't the worst part.

The worst part was the notes written beneath them.

EMOTIONAL RESPONSE: NORMAL

STRESS TOLERANCE: HIGH

MEMORY FORMATION: STABLE

Then one note appeared again and again.

SUBJECT ZERO SHOWS RESISTANCE TO CONDITIONING.

Conditioning.

That word made my stomach turn.

They weren't treating me.

They were changing me.

Sarah walked beside me.

"This is insane."

I didn't answer.

Because something on the wall had caught my attention.

A photograph.

A younger version of me.

Standing beside Dr. Vale.

But this time...

There was someone else.

A little boy.

A child.

I picked up the picture.

My hands started shaking.

Leo noticed.

"What is it?"

I looked at the photograph.

The child was about three years old.

Small.

Smiling.

Holding my hand.

And behind us was a date.

A date from twenty years ago.

"That's impossible."

Sarah looked at the picture.

"What?"

I stared at the child.

"I know him."

Everyone became silent.

Leo stepped closer.

"Who is he?"

I swallowed.

"My brother."

I had spent years believing my childhood was normal.

A normal family.

A normal home.

Normal memories.

But now I was standing inside a room built by people who had erased parts of my life.

And suddenly...

I wasn't sure which memories belonged to me.

I touched the photograph.

"My brother disappeared."

Sarah looked at me.

"When?"

"When I was young."

"What happened?"

I closed my eyes.

Another fragment appeared.

A rainy night.

My mother crying.

My father shouting.

Police officers arriving.

A missing child report.

A little boy gone forever.

Everyone told me he was taken.

Everyone told me we would never find him.

But nobody ever told me...

He had been part of Project Phoenix.

I looked at Leo.

The realization made my chest tighten.

"The children..."

Sarah understood.

"They weren't randomly selected."

I nodded.

"They were connected."

Project Phoenix wasn't searching for children.

It was searching for families.

Connections.

Patterns.

Emotional bonds.

They weren't studying children.

They were studying what happens when people lose someone they love.

The computer on the desk suddenly turned on.

A video file appeared.

No password.

No lock.

Just one message.

PLAY MEMORY RECOVERY SESSION

I stared.

My name appeared.

DANIEL MILLER
AGE: 18

My hands became cold.

A younger version of me appeared on the screen.

Sitting in a chair.

The same chair in the room.

A machine attached to my head.

Dr. Vale standing beside him.

Young Daniel looked terrified.

"Where is my brother?"

Vale looked calm.

"Daniel, your brother is gone."

"No."

The younger me shook his head.

"You took him."

Vale sighed.

"You continue to resist."

The video paused.

Sarah looked at me.

"What is this?"

I couldn't answer.

Because I remembered.

Not everything.

But enough.

My brother wasn't missing.

He was the first child.

The first subject.

The first failure.

And I had discovered it.

I had tried to expose Project Phoenix.

So Vale did the only thing he knew how to do.

He removed the person standing in his way.

Me.

The video continued.

Vale spoke.

"You need to understand something, Daniel."

Young me stared at him.

"What?"

"You are not a victim."

A pause.

"You are proof."

The younger version of me looked confused.

"Proof of what?"

Vale smiled.

"That trauma can be controlled."

The screen changed.

Brain scans.

Medical data.

Years of research.

Then one sentence:

SUBJECT ZERO SURVIVED COMPLETE MEMORY RECONSTRUCTION.

I felt sick.

Memory reconstruction.

They didn't just erase my memories.

They tested whether they could rebuild a person afterward.

They wanted to know if someone could be broken...

And rebuilt.

The perfect survivor.

Leo suddenly spoke.

"Officer Miller."

I turned.

He was looking at the photograph of my brother.

"Was he number one?"

The question froze me.

"What?"

Leo pointed.

At a small symbol on the photograph.

A number.

Hidden in the corner.

01

My breathing stopped.

Subject one.

The first child.

My brother.

The beginning of Project Phoenix.

Before Leo.

Before the others.

Before me.

I looked at the wall again.

Hundreds of photographs.

Hundreds of names.

But only one question remained.

Why did Vale let me live?

Why erase my memory?

Why allow me to become a police officer?

The answer appeared on the computer.

A new file opened.

FINAL OBJECTIVE

I clicked.

A message appeared.

SUBJECT ZERO WAS NOT CREATED TO SERVE PROJECT PHOENIX.

I read the next line.

My blood ran cold.

SUBJECT ZERO WAS CREATED TO DESTROY IT.

I stared.

Then another message appeared.

BUT SUBJECT ZERO FAILED.

The room went silent.

Sarah looked at me.

"Failed?"

The final line appeared.

BECAUSE HE FORGOT.

I stepped backward.

Because suddenly I understood.

Dr. Vale didn't erase my memory because I was dangerous.

He erased my memory because I was the only person who could stop him.

And the entire time...

I had been searching for the person who created Project Phoenix.

Without realizing...

I had already known him.

The speakers activated.

Vale's voice returned.

But this time...

He wasn't speaking to everyone.

He was speaking only to me.

"Daniel."

A pause.

"Do you remember what happened to your brother?"

My heart stopped.

Because deep inside the forgotten pieces of my mind...

A memory was returning.

A memory I had buried for twenty years.

A memory of the night Project Phoenix began.

A memory of the person who took my brother.

And when the image finally appeared...

I realized the truth.

It wasn't Dr. Vale.

It wasn't a stranger.

It was someone I trusted.

Someone who had raised me.

Someone who had protected me.

May you like

Someone who had been there from the beginning.

My own father.
