Chapter 7: The Officer Who Was Never Supposed to Know

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
My name was on the screen.
Not mentioned.
Not referenced.
Not listed as an investigator.
My name was attached to the project itself.
DIRECTOR OF PROJECT PHOENIX: OFFICER DANIEL MILLER
I stared at the words.
Waiting for them to disappear.
Waiting for someone to laugh and tell me it was a mistake.
A trick.
A fake.
But the screen remained.
The letters stayed exactly where they were.
Leo looked at me.
His eyes were full of confusion.
"Officer Miller..."
His voice shook.
"Is it true?"
I looked at him.
And that was the hardest part.
Not the accusation.
Not the fear.
Not the possibility that someone was framing me.
It was seeing a child who had trusted me suddenly wondering if I was another person who had lied to him.
"No."
The answer came immediately.
But I knew I needed more than one word.
"I don't know why my name is there."
Leo watched my face.
Trying to decide whether he believed me.
I couldn't blame him.
Everyone in his life had told him the truth was one thing.
Then shown him another.
His father.
The doctors.
The people behind Project Phoenix.
They had all worn friendly faces.
They had all said they were helping.
Then they hurt him.
A child's trust is fragile.
Once broken enough times...
Even kindness starts to look dangerous.
Detective Bennett stepped in front of the screen.
"Someone is trying to manipulate us."
Her eyes stayed on the monitor.
"They know we found the system. They know we're close."
I nodded.
"But why use my name?"
That was the question.
The only question that mattered.
The screen changed.
A new file opened.
My photograph appeared.
Not a recent one.
An old photograph.
A younger version of me.
No badge.
No uniform.
Standing beside a group of people.
Doctors.
Researchers.
And Dr. Adrian Vale.
My stomach dropped.
I stepped closer.
I didn't recognize the picture.
But my body reacted before my mind did.
A strange feeling.
Like seeing a place from a dream.
Something familiar.
Something buried.
Sarah looked at me.
"Jason?"
I didn't answer.
Because I was trying to remember.
Trying to pull something from the deepest corner of my mind.
But there was nothing.
Only fragments.
A hallway.
Bright lights.
A child's voice.
A door closing.
Then darkness.
"I don't remember."
The words came out quietly.
Sarah looked at me.
"What do you mean?"
I pointed at the screen.
"I don't remember this."
Nobody spoke.
The room became silent.
Even Leo stopped moving.
"You were there," Sarah said.
"I know."
"You knew Dr. Vale?"
"I don't know."
She looked at me carefully.
"Jason, look at me."
I did.
"Are you saying someone erased your memory?"
I wanted to say no.
Because it sounded impossible.
But I had already learned something.
Impossible things were happening.
A hidden facility.
A device inside a child.
A secret project.
A man controlling a school.
Impossible was no longer a reason to ignore something.
"I think..."
I swallowed.
"I think someone took something from me."
Leo stared at me.
"They did that to us too."
His words were quiet.
But they hit hard.
Because suddenly I understood.
Leo and I weren't just connected by this investigation.
We were connected by something much older.
Something neither of us remembered.
Michael Carter stepped forward.
"You don't understand."
Everyone turned toward him.
His face was pale.
"What?"
He looked at the screen.
Then at me.
"You were part of the original team."
My heart stopped.
"What team?"
"The Phoenix team."
I stared at him.
"Impossible."
Michael shook his head.
"I saw your name."
"Where?"
"In the documents."
"Then why don't I remember?"
He looked away.
"Because you were removed."
Sarah's expression hardened.
"Removed by who?"
Michael hesitated.
Then whispered:
"By Dr. Vale."
The room went quiet.
I felt anger rising.
"So Dr. Vale erased my memory?"
Michael nodded.
"After the accident."
"What accident?"
Michael looked at Leo.
Then at me.
"The first experiment failed."
Leo's face changed.
"First?"
Michael nodded slowly.
"Before the children."
I felt cold.
Project Phoenix didn't begin with Leo.
It began before.
With adults.
With researchers.
With me.
"What was the purpose?"
Michael looked at the floor.
"They wanted to create people who could survive extreme psychological pressure."
Sarah frowned.
"Survive?"
Michael nodded.
"They believed trauma could be controlled."
I looked at Leo.
A seven-year-old boy.
A child they had hurt because they wanted data.
"They experimented on children because the adult trials failed."
Michael closed his eyes.
"Yes."
My hands tightened.
"How many adults?"
Michael didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
I already knew.
Not many.
Because if there had been many survivors...
Someone would have talked.
The screen suddenly flickered.
A countdown appeared.
00:09:59
Sarah looked at it.
"What is that?"
Michael's face changed.
"Oh no."
I turned toward him.
"What?"
"The facility."
"What about it?"
"If the system detects unauthorized access..."
He stopped.
"Finish the sentence."
Michael looked terrified.
"It destroys everything."
Sarah moved toward the computer.
"Can we stop it?"
Michael shook his head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because it was designed to erase evidence."
The countdown continued.
00:09:21
The room suddenly felt smaller.
Nine minutes.
Nine minutes before every answer disappeared.
Every record.
Every child.
Every piece of proof.
I looked at Leo.
Then at the screens.
Then at my own name.
Someone had built this entire nightmare.
Someone had hidden it.
Someone had erased memories.
But they made one mistake.
They left survivors.
And they underestimated what happens when survivors finally remember.
I grabbed the computer equipment.
"We copy everything we can."
Sarah nodded.
Michael looked at me.
"You don't understand what you're walking into."
I looked at him.
"No."
I glanced at Leo.
"But I understand what happens if I don't."
The countdown reached:
00:08:30
Then the intercom activated.
A familiar voice filled the room.
The Collector.
"Daniel."
Everyone froze.
I looked at the speaker.
He used my first name.
Not Officer Miller.
Daniel.
A name only someone close would use.
"You always were stubborn."
My blood ran cold.
"Who are you?"
A quiet laugh came through the speaker.
"You really don't remember."
The monitors changed.
A photograph appeared.
Two young men standing together.
One was me.
The other...
The Collector.
The man I had been chasing.
The man behind Project Phoenix.
The person who knew my past.
Then his name appeared.
DR. ADRIAN VALE
I stared at the screen.
Because the man who had destroyed Leo's life...
Was the same man who had once been my partner.
And then he said the words that shattered everything.
"Welcome back, Daniel."
A pause.
"You were never investigating Project Phoenix."
May you like
The lights flickered.
"You were one of its creators."
