Chapter 6 - The Room Beneath the PoolThe search began just before sunset.

Four state investigators entered the Carter property alongside Detective Ortiz. They secured the house, photographed every room, and brought in a forensic team equipped to examine the swimming pool.

Deputy Bell had been ordered to surrender his badge pending an investigation.

He did not appear at the search.

Jason had disappeared.

At the hospital, Emily watched the live updates on Ortiz's phone until the detective turned the screen away.

"Your dad and I will handle the investigation," Ortiz told her. "You shouldn't have to watch every moment."

Emily nodded, but she kept Bluebird in her lap.

I had never seen her look so old.

Around nine that evening, Ortiz called.

They had found the hidden room.

The entrance was concealed behind a metal panel near the pool's filtration system. A narrow stairwell descended beneath the concrete deck into an old maintenance chamber that did not appear on the house's modern floor plan.

The room smelled of wet stone and rust.

There was a mattress on the floor, a bucket, an empty water bottle, and a metal ring bolted into the wall.

There were also fresh scratches around the inside of the door.

Someone had been locked in there.

But Sarah wasn't there anymore.

The investigators found a strip of fabric caught beneath the door and blood on the lower stair.

The blood matched Sarah's preliminary medical records from an earlier emergency-room visit, one she'd explained away as an accident several months before.

Ortiz called me from the house.

"We found signs your ex-wife was being held there," she said. "We're checking every possible location."

"What about the bags?"

A pause.

"We've recovered personal effects connected to Rebecca Miles. Some of the material appears to be biological."

I closed my eyes.

"Is she dead?"

"We cannot confirm that until the forensic tests are complete."

I understood why she wouldn't promise anything.

But I knew what the photographs had shown.

Rebecca's wedding ring.

Bloodstained clothing.

A set of keys with the name of a lakeside motel stamped onto the tag.

The pool had not been used to hide ordinary trash.

It had been used to bury the past.

Then Ortiz told me something else.

Inside the hidden room, investigators had found a piece of paper folded into the mattress.

It contained only four words.

THE ORCHARD IS NOT SAFE.

Beneath the message was a drawing of a blue bird.

Sarah had left it for us.

That night, I took Emily to a secure family shelter under the supervision of a child-protection specialist. She would not sleep unless I sat beside her bed.

At two in the morning, she woke from a nightmare and began calling for her mother.

I held her until she could breathe normally again.

Then she looked up.

"Daddy, can I tell you something without you getting angry?"

"Always."

"Mommy knew Jason was bad before he married her."

I waited.

"She told him she wouldn't leave you because of him. She said she would protect me."

Emily wiped her cheeks.

"But after you got divorced, Jason said it was finally his turn to make the rules."

I tried to speak, but the words wouldn't come.

For years, I had believed that my marriage ended because Sarah and I simply stopped understanding each other. We had disagreements, financial stress, long stretches of silence, and different ideas about what Emily needed.

I had never imagined another person had been carefully shaping the pieces of our lives.

"Did your mother ever try to leave him?"

Emily nodded.

"Three times."

"Why didn't she call me?"

"She said Jason knew where you lived. She was afraid he'd come after you, too."

I sat beside her until dawn.

Just before sunrise, Ortiz arrived with an update.

The police had identified a vehicle connected to the location in the recording. It belonged to an abandoned lakeside property once owned by Jason's father.

The place was near the orchard.

It was also where Rebecca had last been seen alive.

Ortiz handed me a photograph of the property.

Behind the main building stood a boarded-up boathouse.

Emily stared at it.

"That's where he took Mommy."

She pointed to the far corner of the image.

"There's a red door behind the trees. He said nobody could find it."

Then she looked directly at me.

"And Daddy, if Jason knows the police are looking there, he'll kill her before they arrive."
