Chapter 12 - THE REAL OWNERMy Father Had Been Lying for Eighteen YearsHarold's confession broke something open inside the room.

Daniel Cross had never owned Vale Holdings.
He had never been part of my father's company.
Yet his name sat at the center of the trust.
I turned to Elena.
“Tell me everything.”
She nodded.
“Daniel was your grandfather's accountant.”
“That doesn't make sense.”
“He discovered the fraud.”
“So why was he named owner?”
“Because your grandfather feared exposure.”
She pointed to the records.
“Daniel agreed to hide the properties temporarily while gathering evidence.”
“And Harold took control.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't Daniel expose him?”
“Because Harold threatened his children.”
I looked at Lucas.
“And then?”
“Daniel disappeared.”
Harold laughed.
“You make it sound dramatic.”
“You murdered him.”
“No.”
“You killed him.”
“No.”
“Then where is he?”
Harold said nothing.
Elena stared at him.
“You don't know.”
For the first time, Harold looked uncertain.
Elena smiled.
“Daniel never died.”
I felt the floor move beneath me.
“What?”
“He disappeared by choice.”
“Where is he?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why does he own the trust?”
“Because he planned for this.”
She turned toward me.
“The trust only unlocks when two conditions are met.”
“What?”
“You reach thirty.”
She glanced at Lena.
“And the second-generation heir survives.”
Lena.
My niece.
I understood.
The entire scheme wasn't about me.
It was about succession.
Harold had needed me to activate the trust.
Then he intended to force a transfer through Lena.
But there was one problem.
Me.
I was the current legal trustee.
I could block it.
Harold moved toward the table.
“Sign.”
“No.”
“Adrian.”
“No.”
“You have no idea what happens if you refuse.”
“Then tell me.”
His voice lowered.
“The city burns.”
I frowned.
He pointed to the vault.
“You saw the files.”
“Yes.”
“Those files aren't evidence.”
“Then what are they?”
“Insurance.”
He explained.
Every politician.
Every judge.
Every banker.
Every developer.
Everyone whose name was in those files had something to lose.
If the vault opened publicly, the city's power structure would collapse.
“And if I leak them?”
“Markets crash.”
“Good.”
“Your employees lose their jobs.”
Silence.
“Thousands.”
I hated that he knew exactly where to strike.
Harold smiled.
“You always were predictable.”
Then the alarm sounded.
A red light began flashing.
The vault doors started closing.
Someone had triggered the emergency lockdown.
Elena shouted:
“Get Lena!”
Lucas ran.
I followed.
We reached the control room.
The monitor came on.
Lena was gone.
Pilar was gone.
Cole was dead.
And one final camera showed a black car leaving Rosehill.
Driver?
Harold.
He hadn't been standing beside us.
It was another man.
A decoy.
I turned slowly.
“Where is my father?”
Elena looked at me.
“We have twenty minutes before the vault seals permanently.”
“What happens then?”
“All the evidence is destroyed.”
“And Lena?”
Elena's voice became almost a whisper.
“Harold will take her to the place he took Lucas.”
Lucas looked at me.
“The old Vale estate.”
We ran.

He was waiting.
