Chapter 11 - PROJECT ADRIANMy Entire Life Had Been PlannedThe folder was nearly three hundred pages.

Every major event in my life had a note.

School.

College.

Career.

Relationships.

Even the company I founded.

Nothing was accidental.

My childhood scholarship?

Approved by a Vale trustee.

My first investor?

A shell company.

My first property?

Owned by the family trust.

My promotion?

Engineered.

My board?

Selected.

My obsession with real estate?

Manipulated.

I felt sick.

“You raised me inside a machine.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“I tried to break it.”

“You failed.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you leave?”

“To keep you alive.”

I threw the folder across the room.

“They controlled everything anyway.”

“No.”

She pointed at the papers.

“They controlled what happened around you.”

“What didn't they control?”

“You.”

I laughed bitterly.

“That's convenient.”

Elena came closer.

“Your father wanted you to become the final trustee.”

“My father is dead.”

“Harold's death was staged.”

I stopped.

“What?”

“He disappeared.”

Martin, still wounded on the floor, laughed weakly.

“He really did.”

I looked at him.

“You knew?”

“Of course.”

“Where is he?”

Martin smiled.

“Closer than you think.”

The basement door opened.

A man walked in.

Old.

Gray hair.

Walking cane.

I recognized him before my brain accepted it.

Harold Vale.

My father.

Alive.

I stepped backward.

“No.”

He smiled.

“Hello, son.”

Everything inside me broke.

“You're dead.”

“I wanted you to think so.”

“Why?”

“Because dead men are difficult to investigate.”

I stared.

“You manipulated my entire life.”

“I protected it.”

“You destroyed my mother.”

“She destroyed herself.”

Elena moved forward.

Harold pointed at her.

“You always were sentimental.”

I stepped between them.

“Why Rosehill?”

Harold smiled.

“Because Rosehill is where this ends.”

“What ends?”

“The trust.”

He looked at my hands.

“You have both keys.”

I tightened my fist.

“I'm not signing anything.”

“You already did.”

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

He pointed to the folder.

“Your signature was embedded into the original trust years ago.”

“That wasn't me.”

“You were five.”

“I couldn't sign legal documents.”

“You didn't.”

He smiled.

“I used your fingerprints.”

I felt suddenly dizzy.

“You've been waiting for me to become thirty.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Harold looked at Lena on the monitor.

“Because when you turn thirty, the trust activates.”

“Activates what?”

“Full ownership.”

“Of what?”

He looked at me.

“Everything.”

I stared at the documents.

All those properties.

All those accounts.

All that hidden money.

“And Lena?”

Harold smiled.

“She is the contingency heir.”

Elena's face went pale.

Harold continued:

“If you die tonight, ownership transfers to her.”

I looked at Lena.

Then at Harold.

“That's why you took her.”

“Yes.”

“That's why you brought me here.”

“Yes.”

“That's why you wanted Rosehill.”

He nodded.

“And that's why my mother warned me.”

Harold smiled.

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“Your mother warned you because she knows the last secret.”

“What secret?”

He leaned toward me.

“The trust doesn't belong to me.”

May you like

He whispered:

“It belongs to Daniel Cross.”
