Chapter 15 - WHAT SOPHIE FOUND IN THE WALLThree weeks passed before I opened the final box.

The police had arrested Gregory.
My grandfather remained in custody.
Richard survived.
Thomas disappeared again.
Amanda stayed away from the company.
And Sophie went back to preschool.
Life looked normal.
But it wasn't.
Every night, I read my wife's letters.
Every night, I searched for the answer.
Was she part of it?
Did she marry me for access?
Was our entire life a lie?
One afternoon, Sophie came into my office carrying the stuffed rabbit.
“Daddy.”
“What?”
“Bunny is broken.”
I took the rabbit.
The recorder had been removed.
Inside was a tiny brass key.
I stared at it.
“Where did this come from?”
Sophie pointed to the wall.
“Mommy's room.”
I followed her.
She stood beside an old bookshelf.
“Here.”
I moved the books.
Nothing.
Then she pointed lower.
“Behind.”
I removed the panel.
A narrow compartment appeared.
Inside was another box.
This one had my name.
I opened it.
There was a photograph.
My wife.
My grandfather.
And another man.
The man from the original trust records.
The founder.
Under the photograph was a note.
Daniel, this is the one truth I could never tell you in person.
I read.
“I did love you.”
I stopped.
The next line made my hands shake.
“I did not marry you for the trust.”
Another.
“I knew the trust would eventually become a target.”
Another.
“I knew they would come for Sophie.”
I kept reading.
“But I made one terrible mistake.”
The room seemed to shrink.
“I trusted the wrong person.”
The note continued.
“The person who betrayed me was not Gregory.”
I looked at the photograph.
The man beside her.
I recognized him.
Richard.
My lawyer.
The man who had claimed to protect me.
The man who had helped everyone.
The man who had handed me the truth piece by piece.
My wife's next words were underlined.
Richard created the second network.
I sat down.
All those years.
All those deaths.
The staged wedding.
The false police report.
My grandfather.
Gregory.
Amanda.
Elias.
They had all been pieces of a larger structure.
Richard hadn't merely known about it.
He had built the system connecting the factions.
And he'd made them fight one another while controlling the outcome.
Then I found the last page.
There is only one way to stop Richard.
A key.
A location.
A phrase.
THE ROOM UNDER THE HOUSE.
My heart stopped.
My house.
I went downstairs.
Sophie followed.
I stopped her at the hallway.
“Stay here.”
“But Daddy—”
“Please.”
I entered the study.
Moved the painting.
Opened the safe.
Then searched the floor.
Nothing.
I remembered the photographs on Amanda's phone.
The house.
My bedroom.
The safe.
The wall.
The stairs.
I looked at the staircase.
One step was slightly higher than the others.
I pried it up.
A steel hatch appeared.
The key fit.
The door opened.
Cold air rose from below.
A staircase descended into darkness.
I switched on my phone flashlight.
At the bottom was a room.
Rows of files.
Computers.
Screens.
Photographs.
Every person connected to my life.
My mother.
My wife.
Amanda.
Gregory.
Thomas.
Richard.
And Sophie.
I walked toward the main desk.
A monitor suddenly turned on.
Richard appeared on screen.
He was sitting in the same chair from the railway station.
Smiling.
“You finally found it.”
I froze.
“You've been watching me.”
“From the beginning.”
“You killed my wife.”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Richard smiled.
“Your wife.”
My blood ran cold.
“She chose to die.”
“What?”
“She knew the network could only survive if the trust remained divided.”
He leaned toward the camera.
“She sacrificed herself to make sure you hated everyone except the person closest to you.”
I stepped backward.
“Amanda?”
“No.”
“Thomas?”
“No.”
“Who?”
Richard smiled.
“You.”
I stared at him.
“That makes no sense.”
“It does.”
He pressed a button.
Every monitor turned on.
Videos.
My actions.
My conversations.
My wedding preparations.
My financial decisions.
Everything.
Then another file appeared.
DANIEL_REED_PROTOCOL
I opened it.
The first line read:
SUBJECT HAS BEEN PREPARED SINCE AGE 19.
I stopped breathing.
The second line:
EMOTIONAL RESPONSES CONSISTENT.
Third:
PATTERN OF TRUST CONFIRMED.
I looked toward the stairs.
Sophie was standing there.
Holding the rabbit.
“Daddy?”
I turned.
She smiled.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
“Mommy said not to worry.”
I stared at her.
“Why?”
Sophie hugged Bunny.
“Because you were always supposed to find the room.”
I couldn't move.
“What did Mommy tell you?”
Sophie tilted her head.
“That when you found it…”
She paused.
“…you should give this to the man downstairs.”
My eyes widened.
“What man?”
A voice answered from behind me.
“Me.”
I turned.
The basement door was open.
A man stood at the bottom of the stairs.
Older.
Calm.
Smiling.
He looked exactly like the man in my wife's photograph.
The founder of the Blackwood Trust.
The man whose name had been erased from every document.
My real grandfather.
He looked at Sophie.
Then at me.
“Your wife was never trying to protect you from the plan, Daniel.”
He stepped into the light.
“She was preparing you to become it.”
The basement lights came on.
Every screen displayed the same sentence:
PHASE TWO COMPLETE.
And beside me, four-year-old Sophie smiled at the man I had spent the entire night trying to escape.
Because the wedding had never been the beginning.
May you like
It had been the test.
And somehow, my daughter had known the ending before I did.
