Chapter 14 - THE LAST BETRAYALPolice stormed the cemetery.

Gregory tried to run.

Thomas blocked him.

They fought beside the graves.

My grandfather was taken from the mausoleum in handcuffs.

But Richard was gone.

I immediately called Maria.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

The live feed from my grandfather's system was still running.

Sophie was no longer at Maria's house.

Her location had changed.

I felt the blood leave my face.

“They moved her.”

Amanda grabbed my arm.

“Where?”

I checked the coordinates.

The old railway station.

We drove.

The police followed.

When we arrived, the building was deserted.

One train stood waiting on the platform.

Its doors open.

A child’s pink shoe lay near the tracks.

“Sophie!”

I ran inside.

Empty.

Then I heard a whisper from the last carriage.

“Daddy?”

I froze.

“Sophie!”

I opened the door.

My daughter was sitting beneath a seat.

Maria was beside her.

Both were alive.

I dropped to my knees.

Sophie jumped into my arms.

“Daddy!”

I held her so tightly she laughed.

“I knew you'd come.”

I couldn't speak.

Maria started crying.

“I’m sorry.”

“What happened?”

“Richard.”

My stomach dropped.

“He came to the house.”

“I thought he was helping you.”

“He said the police were taking Sophie somewhere safe.”

I looked toward the platform.

“Where is he?”

Maria pointed down the tracks.

A figure appeared in the distance.

Richard.

He wasn't running.

He was walking toward us.

“Daniel.”

I stood.

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“You helped them.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Richard looked at Sophie.

“Because your grandfather wasn't the real enemy.”

I stared.

“Then who?”

Richard smiled.

“The trust.”

I laughed in disbelief.

“What?”

“The system itself.”

He held up a folder.

“Everyone who ever touched it became corrupt.”

My grandfather.

My father.

Gregory.

My mother.

My wife.

Even Richard.

He opened the folder.

“Your wife discovered the only way to destroy the network.”

“How?”

“She planned to dissolve the trust.”

I stared.

“Why didn't she?”

“Because she died first.”

“What does this have to do with Sophie?”

“The trust automatically passes its protections to the next beneficiary.”

Sophie.

Richard looked at her.

“If the trust remains intact, they will keep coming.”

“And if I destroy it?”

“The assets disappear into independent public foundations.”

“No one controls them.”

“Exactly.”

I looked at Sophie.

“What did my wife want?”

Richard handed me a letter.

“Protection.”

I read it.

Her final words were simple.

Daniel, don't protect our daughter by giving her the empire. Protect her by ending the reason everyone wants it.

I looked up.

Richard had tears in his eyes.

“She knew what would happen.”

Then a gunshot exploded.

Richard staggered.

Gregory stood at the far end of the platform.

He fired again.

Thomas tackled him.

The police rushed forward.

Gregory was arrested.

The station fell silent.

I looked at the letter.

At Sophie.

At Amanda.

Then my phone buzzed.

One final message.

No number.

YOU THINK IT ENDS WITH GREGORY.

Another.

YOU THINK YOUR GRANDFATHER IS THE LAST ONE.

Then:

ASK WHO CREATED THE FIRST TRUST.

I looked at the old documents.

The family name appeared at the bottom.

Not my grandfather’s.

Not my father's.

Not even mine.

A different name.

One I had never seen.

Amanda saw my face.

“What is it?”

I whispered:

“Blackwood.”

She froze.

“The trust wasn't created by my grandfather.”

“Then who?”

I stared at Sophie.

“My late wife's family.”

Amanda stepped closer.

“But they were supposed to be the victims.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I looked at the phone.

The final message appeared.

YOUR WIFE DIDN'T MARRY YOU TO PROTECT THE TRUST.

A second message arrived.

SHE MARRIED YOU TO GET CLOSE TO IT.

I stopped breathing.

Amanda whispered:

“Daniel…”

May you like

I couldn't answer.

Because the woman I had spent years mourning might have been part of the conspiracy from the beginning.
