Chapter 15 - I watched the video again.Then again.

My own face stared back at me from the screen.

Calm.

Certain.

Terrifyingly familiar.

Gwen stood beside me.

“No.”

I looked at her.

“You knew?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Did I create Project Echo?”

“I don't know.”

Marcus was still recovering from his wounds.

My mother looked like she had aged twenty years overnight.

Paige stood silently near the grave.

For once, she wasn't smiling.

I pressed play again.

The video continued.

The man on the screen was me.

Not the man I remembered.

Not the soldier.

Not the husband.

Something colder.

Something calculated.

“If you're watching this,” I said in the recording, “Blackridge has already failed.”

I leaned toward the camera.

“The program began with them.”

“But it ends with me.”

Gwen covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“I learned what they were doing.”

“I learned how memory could be manipulated.”

“I learned how information could control people.”

“So I built a system.”

Project Echo.

Not to erase memory.

To restore it.

To expose every secret.

Every hidden contract.

Every identity.

Every transaction.

Every lie.

But there was a problem.

The system was too dangerous.

It could reveal everything.

Including innocent people's private memories.

Including military secrets.

Including things that could start wars.

So I created a final safeguard.

My own memory.

I had myself erased.

The recording showed me sitting in the red room.

Dr. Cross stood behind me.

My mother was crying.

Gwen stood against the wall.

Paige watched.

I spoke into the camera.

“If my memory ever returns completely, Echo activates.”

I looked directly at Gwen.

“And if Gwen is still with me, trust her.”

The recording paused.

Then continued.

“She is the only person who ever betrayed me for the right reason.”

Gwen began crying.

I stared at her.

My entire reality shifted.

All those years.

All that fear.

All those lies.

She had lied to save me.

My mother had lied to protect Paige.

Paige had lied to gain power.

Marcus had lied to protect the operation.

Everyone had a reason.

But reasons didn't erase consequences.

The video continued.

“David Hayes cannot control Project Echo once it begins.”

“Neither can Paige.”

“Neither can Blackridge.”

“So I created one final command.”

The screen went black.

Then a phrase appeared:

HOME.

I felt something click inside my chest.

The implant activated.

Pain ripped through me.

I dropped to my knees.

Memories flooded in.

Everything.

My father's death.

Blackridge.

The red room.

The military.

My first deployment.

The case.

The drive.

Gwen.

Our wedding.

The night before I left.

The final meeting.

I remembered the truth.

I had created Project Echo after discovering Blackridge's network.

But I didn't trust myself with it.

So I made everyone believe I was only a victim.

I made my mother believe she controlled me.

I made Paige believe she could inherit everything.

I made Cross believe he had erased me.

I made Gwen believe she had to protect me.

And I erased my own memories.

Because the only person I trusted with the truth was the version of me who didn't remember it.

I opened my eyes.

The world was silent.

Gwen knelt beside me.

“David?”

I touched her face.

“I remember.”

She cried.

“What?”

“Everything.”

My mother looked at me.

“What are you going to do?”

I stood.

“Finish it.”

I walked toward Paige.

She raised her weapon.

“You can't stop Echo.”

“I don't have to.”

I held out my hand.

“The system is mine.”

She frowned.

“No.”

“You used my money.”

“Yes.”

“You used my family.”

“Yes.”

“You used my wife.”

Her face hardened.

“She chose.”

“Exactly.”

I looked at her.

“You never understood the difference between control and loyalty.”

Paige's gun shook.

Then she lowered it.

For the first time, she looked like my little sister again.

Not an architect.

Not a conspirator.

Just Paige.

“I didn't know how to save us.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

Then federal agents surrounded the cemetery.

Thomas Reed's remaining network was arrested.

Blackridge facilities were raided.

Government contracts were exposed.

Billions in hidden assets were frozen.

My mother's properties were seized.

Paige was arrested.

Dr. Cross was captured three days later at the border.

The world learned what Blackridge had done.

But the story didn't end there.

Because Project Echo was still active.

The final command was waiting.

I returned home with Gwen.

The house was empty.

For the first time in years, there were no cameras.

No guards.

No hidden microphones.

No secret files.

Just silence.

Gwen stood in the kitchen.

The same kitchen where I had first seen her trembling.

She looked at me.

“Do you regret coming home?”

I looked around.

“No.”

She smiled.

“I thought you would.”

“I almost did.”

I walked toward her.

“Then I remembered something.”

“What?”

“Home was never the house.”

I took her hand.

“It was always you.”

She began crying.

I pulled her close.

For four years, I had imagined this moment.

But I had never imagined surviving enough lies to reach it.

Then my phone vibrated.

One notification.

No sender.

No number.

Just a message.

PROJECT ECHO: PHASE 2 COMPLETE.

I stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

THERE ARE 312 ACTIVE SUBJECTS.

Gwen's smile disappeared.

“What does that mean?”

I didn't answer.

Because I already knew.

Project Echo had not ended.

It had only opened its first door.

A final message appeared.

SUBJECT D-17, YOUR FAMILY WAS NEVER THE TARGET.

I read the next line.

YOU WERE.

Then the phone went black.

And somewhere in the city, thousands of screens lit up at once.

The same symbol appeared.

A red circle.

A black line.

And beneath it, four words:

THE SOLDIER IS HOME.

I looked at Gwen.

She looked back at me.

This time, neither of us was afraid.

Because after four years of war, four years of lies, and four years of believing I was fighting just to survive...

I finally understood the truth.

I had never been coming home.

May you like

I had been coming back for the enemy.

And now that the enemy knew I was alive, the real war was finally beginning.
