Chapter 13 - The PromiseWhat Happened Before I Was Born

The USB contained forty-seven files.
Bank statements.
Scanned contracts.
Old photographs.
Audio recordings.
And one video.
Recorded nineteen years earlier.
The filename was:
FINAL_MEETING
I clicked it.
My grandmother appeared on screen.
Older.
Tired.
But clear-eyed.
Daniel Mercer sat beside her.
My father sat across from them.
I watched.
My father said:
"I want out."
Grandma answered:
"You already took your share."
"I want more."
"You have taken enough."
Daniel leaned forward.
"Paul, this company belongs to the family."
Dad laughed.
"No. It belongs to whoever can keep it alive."
Grandma looked at the camera.
"If you continue this, Madison will inherit everything."
Dad became furious.
"She's a child."
"She is the trustee."
"She doesn't even know."
"She will."
Daniel said:
"That's the point."
The video continued.
They discussed land.
Assets.
Accounts.
Trust structures.
Nothing was more shocking than what came next.
Dad said:
"Kevin changes everything."
Grandma looked at him.
"Kevin is a child."
"No."
Dad leaned closer.
"He isn't mine."
The recording cut.
I stared at the screen.
Kevin was standing behind me.
He had heard everything.
He whispered:
"So it's true."
Neither of us moved.
The video resumed from another timestamp.
Grandma was crying.
"You promised me you'd never tell him."
Dad said:
"You should have thought about that before threatening me."
Daniel stood.
"What are you going to do?"
Dad said:
"I'll fix it."
Daniel answered:
"You mean destroy the evidence."
My father's expression changed.
Daniel looked directly at the camera.
"If you're watching this, Paul did something."
The video ended.
Another file opened automatically.
A scanned document.
DNA test.
Kevin Carter.
Biological father:
Daniel Mercer.
Mother:
Susan Carter.
The father line was crossed and replaced by handwriting.
Paul Carter.
I covered my mouth.
Kevin stepped backward.
"So that's why."
"Why what?"
"My whole childhood."
He looked like someone had removed the floor beneath him.
"Dad never loved me."
I shook my head.
"I don't think that's true."
Kevin laughed.
"He tolerated me."
We sat in silence.
Then another recording began.
Grandma's voice.
"Madison, if this reaches you, remember one thing."
I leaned toward the screen.
"Your father isn't trying to take the house."
My heart stopped.
"He is trying to regain control of the trust."
"Because the trust controls Carter Holdings."
"Whoever controls Carter Holdings controls the land."
"And whoever controls the land controls the debt."
I frowned.
The connection came together.
Kevin's $312,480 debt wasn't separate.
It was attached to the company.
Dad had used Carter Holdings as a shell.
If the company collapsed, lenders could pursue assets.
Including land.
Including my house.
Grandma's voice continued:
"I knew Paul would eventually try to make Madison purchase the property."
I stared.
"He needs her mortgage."
My blood went cold.
"He needs Madison to appear to be the legitimate owner."
"Then he can move the debt beneath her."
I looked at Kevin.
"He planned this before I even bought the house."
Kevin nodded slowly.
"And Grandma knew."
The final recording played.
Grandma whispered:
"I am leaving you the house because I know Paul will come for it."
The recording ended.
Then an email arrived.
From my father.
One sentence.
Come to my office tomorrow morning, alone.
Underneath it was a photograph.
A photograph of Kevin's birth certificate.
May you like
And across it, written in red:
You still don't know why Daniel died.
