Chapter 11 - The RecordingThe Truth My Father Never Meant to Hear

I didn't take the report.
I took a photo of every page.
Dad noticed.
"Give me your phone."
"No."
"Madison."
"No."
He moved toward me.
Kevin stepped between us.
"Dad."
"Move."
"No."
For a moment, nobody breathed.
Then Tessa spoke.
"Paul, what did you do?"
Dad looked at her.
"You don't understand."
"Then explain."
He didn't.
My mother suddenly stood.
"I can't do this anymore."
Dad turned.
"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying I'm done lying."
His face went white.
Mom looked at me.
"Your grandmother discovered the money transfers."
I listened.
"She confronted your father."
"When?"
"Two months before she died."
"What happened?"
"He begged her not to tell you."
"Why?"
"Because by then he'd already transferred the company assets."
"To himself?"
"To corporations he controlled."
I looked at Dad.
"Why?"
"He said he was protecting us."
Mom laughed bitterly.
"That's what he always called it."
I felt the anger spreading through my chest.
"What happened the last night Grandma was alive?"
Mom wiped her face.
"She called me."
"What did she say?"
"She said she had proof."
"Proof of what?"
"That Daniel hadn't died naturally."
I looked at Elaine's father's name.
"Daniel's accident."
Mom nodded.
"She believed your father had caused it."
Dad snapped:
"That's insane."
Mom looked at him.
"You told me you were there."
Silence.
Kevin stared.
"You were at the accident?"
Dad didn't answer.
Mom continued.
"He said Daniel threatened to expose him."
I stared at my father.
"Did you kill him?"
"No."
His answer was immediate.
But then he looked down.
"I didn't kill him."
"Did you arrange it?"
"No."
"Did you know someone planned to hurt him?"
He said nothing.
That silence was enough.
I pulled the small recorder from my pocket.
Dad looked at it.
I had been recording since the meeting started.
"I told you the truth," I said.
His face changed.
"You can't..."
"I can."
I stood.
"I want every document."
Dad stepped toward me.
"No."
I backed away.
"I already sent copies to someone."
That was partly true.
I'd uploaded them to a secure cloud folder and shared access with Elaine.
Dad didn't know that.
His face became unreadable.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
"Who is it?"
He didn't answer.
He walked outside.
I followed quietly.
He answered.
"Yes?"
I could hear only his side.
"How did you get it?"
Pause.
"No. She doesn't know."
Pause.
"Then stop her."
My heart pounded.
"Who is this?"
Dad turned.
He saw me.
The call ended.
"Who was that?"
"No one."
I raised the recorder.
"Try again."
He stared at me.
Then his phone buzzed.
A text appeared.
His face drained.
I saw only part of it.
She knows about Daniel.
Then another line:
Plan B is active.
Dad locked the screen.
I looked at him.
"What is Plan B?"
He didn't answer.
My phone buzzed at the same moment.
A notification from my house camera.
Motion detected.
I opened the feed.
My front door was open.
I hadn't opened it.
I watched the screen.
A man in a gray jacket stepped inside.
The same man from the SUV.
He looked directly at the camera.
Then raised one hand.
He was holding a document.
He pinned it to the wall.
Zooming in, I read the words.
NOTICE OF FORECLOSURE PROCEEDINGS.
I looked at my father.
May you like
He didn't look surprised.
He looked relieved.
