CHAPTER 15 THE LAST DOOR

The tomb doors slammed shut.
The sound echoed beneath the cemetery like the closing of a prison.
I turned toward my father.
“Dad!”
He was on the ground.
Blood soaked through his shirt.
My mother screamed his name.
Marcus rushed toward him.
“Stay with me!”
Jonathan tried to speak.
“Adrian…”
I dropped beside him.
“I'm here.”
His eyes struggled to focus.
“Don't… open…”
“What?”
“The vault.”
I looked toward the massive stone door.
“What is inside?”
His breathing became shallow.
“Everything.”
Then his eyes closed.
“Dad!”
Marcus checked his pulse.
“He's alive.”
Relief hit me for half a second.
Then the lights beneath the cemetery came on.
One after another.
A hidden corridor illuminated beneath us.
Victor stood at the opposite end.
Noah was beside him.
The real Adrian stood behind Lily.
Both children were terrified.
I rose slowly.
“Let them go.”
Victor shook his head.
“You still don't understand.”
“I understand enough.”
“No.”
He pointed toward the corridor.
“The vault has been waiting for you.”
I looked at the three names glowing on the wall.
ADRIAN.
EMMA.
LILY.
Then I looked at Emma.
She was standing beside Alexander.
Her face was pale.
“Emma.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
“What do you know?”
She looked at the wall.
“I've seen this before.”
“When?”
“At Blackwater.”
She stepped closer.
“There was a door like this.”
“What was behind it?”
“I don't know.”
“Why?”
“Because they never opened it.”
Victor laughed.
“Not until tonight.”
The real Adrian looked at me.
“You need to understand something.”
I stared at him.
“You first.”
He nodded.
“I am the original Adrian.”
“I know.”
“And you…”
He hesitated.
“…were created to replace me.”
I clenched my fists.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it's true.”
“Then why do I have memories?”
“Because they gave you mine.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“When I was twelve, they extracted the memories they needed.”
“And put them into me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To make you believe you were me.”
I shook my head.
“That doesn't explain my entire life.”
“It explains enough.”
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“I remember my first day of school.”
“I remember my mother holding me.”
“I remember my father teaching me to ride a bike.”
“I remember falling in love with Lena.”
“I remember Noah being born.”
“I remember Lily.”
He stared at me.
“Those memories were real.”
“Then how could they belong to you?”
“They didn't.”
I froze.
He continued.
“They were fabricated.”
My mother suddenly stepped forward.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
She was crying.
“They weren't fabricated.”
The real Adrian looked at her.
“You knew?”
She nodded.
“I helped create them.”
I stared at her.
“You did what?”
She looked at me.
“We couldn't give you his memories.”
“Why?”
“Because you would have remembered what happened.”
“What happened?”
She swallowed.
“Adrian died.”
I stared at the real Adrian.
“No.”
She shook her head.
“The original Adrian died.”
The man standing beside Noah stepped backward.
“What?”
My mother continued.
“The boy you call the real Adrian…”
She pointed at him.
“…is not Adrian.”
The entire chamber went silent.
Victor's face changed.
The man beside Noah looked at her.
“You're lying.”
“I saw him die.”
“No.”
“You were there.”
He shook his head.
“I survived.”
“No.”
My mother looked at me.
“The boy who survived was another child.”
I felt the ground disappear beneath me.
“Then who is he?”
She whispered:
“Subject Seven.”
The man stared at her.
“That's impossible.”
“You were created from Adrian's genetic material.”
He stepped backward.
“No.”
“Victor told you that you were the original.”
“He lied.”
Victor suddenly shouted:
“Enough!”
For the first time, he looked afraid.
I turned toward him.
“You lied to him.”
Victor's jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I needed him to believe he was Adrian.”
“To do what?”
“To activate the vault.”
I looked at Lily.
Then Emma.
Then Noah.
Victor continued:
“The system requires three genetic signatures.”
“Adrian.”
“Emma.”
“Lily.”
“But Noah?”
He smiled.
“Noah isn't an heir.”
I looked at my son.
“Then why take him?”
“Because he is the stabilizer.”
“What does that mean?”
“The vault won't open unless he is present.”
I felt sick.
“All these years…”
Victor nodded.
“Your family has been fighting over a door.”
“And what's behind it?”
Victor looked at the wall.
“The original trust.”
“Money?”
“No.”
“Companies?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
He smiled.
“Freedom.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“The trust contains the identities of everyone who built the network.”
“The accounts.”
“The evidence.”
“The names.”
“The blackmail files.”
“Everything.”
I stared at him.
“And whoever controls it controls everyone.”
“Yes.”
“So that's why Elias wants it.”
“Yes.”
“That's why you want it.”
“Yes.”
“And that's why you wanted my children.”
Victor nodded.
“But there's one problem.”
“What?”
“You still don't know who the fourth child is.”
The chamber went silent.
I looked at Emma.
Then Lily.
Then Noah.
“Fourth child?”
Victor smiled.
“The one Elias erased from every record.”
My mother suddenly screamed:
“Don't!”
Victor looked at her.
“You knew.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“Yes.”
He pointed toward a sealed door.
“Open it.”
Nobody moved.
Victor raised his weapon toward Noah.
“Open it.”
The real Adrian looked at me.
“Don't.”
Victor cocked the weapon.
“Then your son dies.”
I stepped toward the door.
“Stop.”
Victor smiled.
I placed my hand against the panel.
Nothing happened.
Then Lily stepped beside me.
The system activated.
LILY COLE: VERIFIED.
Emma stepped forward.
EMMA COLE: VERIFIED.
Noah's wrist began glowing.
NOAH COLE: VERIFIED.
The door shook.
Then a final prompt appeared.
FOURTH SIGNATURE REQUIRED.
Victor smiled.
“Now you see.”
I looked at him.
“Where is the fourth child?”
He pointed toward the wall.
A photograph appeared.
A baby.
Then a name.
ALEXANDER JONATHAN COLE.
I turned toward Alexander.
He looked terrified.
“No.”
The system displayed:
FOURTH HEIR LOCATED.
Alexander stumbled backward.
“I don't understand.”
My father, still bleeding, suddenly opened his eyes.
“Alexander…”
Alexander looked at him.
“What?”
Jonathan whispered:
“You were never my son.”
Alexander froze.
My mother covered her mouth.
“No…”
Jonathan continued:
“You were Elias's first experiment.”
Alexander shook his head.
“No.”
“The first child created from the bloodline.”
I looked at him.
“That's why you know everything.”
Alexander's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't know.”
Jonathan whispered:
“You weren't supposed to survive.”
Alexander stared at his hands.
Then the system began counting.
FOUR SIGNATURES REQUIRED.
TIME REMAINING: 03:00
Victor stepped forward.
“Put your hands on the panel.”
Nobody moved.
“Now.”
Alexander walked toward it.
I grabbed his arm.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“If I don't?”
Victor raised his weapon.
Noah cried:
“Dad!”
Alexander pulled away.
“Let me.”
“No.”
“If this ends it…”
“It could kill you.”
He smiled faintly.
“Maybe that's what I was made for.”
He placed his hand on the panel.
The system flashed.
ALEXANDER: VERIFIED.
The vault began opening.
A deep mechanical sound rolled through the chamber.
The stone door lifted.
Behind it was not gold.
Not money.
Not weapons.
A vast underground archive.
Thousands of files.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Bank records.
Medical records.
Government documents.
And hundreds of locked metal boxes.
At the center stood a single glass case.
Inside was a small black book.
Victor stared at it.
His face changed.
“No.”
I walked toward the case.
“What is that?”
My mother whispered:
“The original ledger.”
“What's inside?”
“Every name.”
Victor suddenly fired.
The bullet struck the glass.
The case cracked.
Marcus fired back.
Victor ducked behind a pillar.
Chaos erupted.
Men stormed into the chamber.
Gunfire filled the vault.
I grabbed Lily.
Alexander grabbed Emma.
Noah ran toward me.
“Dad!”
I pulled him into my arms.
For one second, all three children were together.
Then the vault alarm sounded.
UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS.
PURGE INITIATED.
The files began burning.
“What?”
Victor shouted:
“Get out!”
I looked at the archive.
Everything we needed was disappearing.
I grabbed the black ledger.
The moment I touched it, the system activated.
A screen appeared.
PRIMARY USER IDENTIFIED.
I stared.
Then:
ADRIAN COLE.
I froze.
The real Adrian looked at me.
“No.”
I stepped backward.
The system continued.
ORIGINAL HEIR CONFIRMED.
Victor stared at me in disbelief.
“You…”
He whispered:
“You really are him.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
He pointed at me.
“The original Adrian.”
I shook my head.
“That isn't possible.”
My mother was crying.
“It is.”
I looked at her.
“How?”
She whispered:
“Because the child who died…”
She pointed toward the man who claimed to be Adrian.
“…was never Adrian.”
The real Adrian dropped his weapon.
“What?”
My mother looked at me.
“You were.”
The chamber went silent.
Victor smiled.
Then he laughed.
“Finally.”
I stared at my mother.
“What are you saying?”
She walked toward me.
“When they took you at twelve, they didn't replace your memories.”
She touched my face.
“They removed them.”
My heart pounded.
“You were the original.”
I looked at the system.
PRIMARY USER: ADRIAN COLE.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The memories.
The bracelet.
The bloodline.
The vault.
The reason Victor had feared me.
The reason Elias had wanted me.
The reason my entire identity had been attacked.
I wasn't a replacement.
I wasn't a copy.
I wasn't a fabricated heir.
I was the original.
The man who had spent years claiming to be me was the experiment.
Then a voice came from behind us.
“That's not the worst part.”
I turned.
Elias stood inside the vault.
Alive.
He smiled.
And behind him were six armed men.
He looked directly at Lily.
“The real secret isn't who Adrian is.”
He pointed toward the black ledger in my hand.
“It's what Lily's blood can unlock.”
Lily stepped backward.
Elias smiled.
“Because the final page…”
He paused.
“…contains her name.”
The vault doors began closing.
I grabbed Lily's hand.
Elias laughed.
And as darkness swallowed the room, the final screen appeared:
FINAL HEIR ACTIVATION: 00:10
00:09
00:08
I looked at my children.
At Lena.
At my father bleeding on the floor.
At the ledger in my hands.
Then I realized the countdown wasn't counting down to the vault closing.
It was counting down to something inside Lily waking up.
00:03
Lily suddenly screamed.
00:02
Her bracelet shattered.
May you like
00:01
And every light in the underground facility went black.
