CHAPTER 14 THE MAN WHO STOLE MY LIFE

The photograph remained on my screen.
Noah was alive.
That was the first thing I told myself.
Alive.
Terrified, but alive.
The second thing was harder to accept.
The man standing beside him looked exactly like me.
Not similar.
Not close.
Exactly.
Same eyes.
Same jaw.
Same scar above the eyebrow.
Even the tiny mark beneath his left ear that I'd had since childhood.
I stared at the photograph.
Then I looked at Alexander.
“You knew.”
He didn't answer.
“Alexander.”
His hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“Yes.”
My voice dropped.
“You knew there was another me.”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Since the day you were born.”
I felt something inside me crack.
“You watched me live his life.”
“I watched you survive.”
“That's not an answer.”
“I didn't know how to tell you.”
“You could have started with, ‘Adrian, you're not Adrian.’”
Alexander closed his eyes for a second.
“You wouldn't have believed me.”
“I don't believe anything anymore.”
Lena began crying beside me.
I looked at her.
“You knew too?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“You're sure?”
“Yes.”
She looked at Lily.
“I knew there were secrets.”
“But not this?”
“No.”
My mother whispered from the front seat:
“I knew.”
I turned.
She didn't look back.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Twenty years.”
I laughed.
“Twenty years.”
She nodded.
“You were supposed to be dead.”
I stared at her.
“Who?”
“The original Adrian.”
I pointed at the photograph.
“Him.”
“Yes.”
“Why was he replaced?”
My mother took a breath.
“Because he was dangerous.”
“He's a child.”
“He was twelve.”
“So?”
“He knew what the network was doing.”
My father finally spoke.
“He found the records.”
“What records?”
“The original trust.”
“The one everyone keeps talking about?”
“Yes.”
“What did he discover?”
My father looked at me.
“That the family wasn't built on money.”
I waited.
“It was built on ownership.”
“Ownership of what?”
“People.”
The words made my stomach turn.
“The trust controlled companies, hospitals, private security firms, research facilities.”
He paused.
“But those were only the surface.”
“What was underneath?”
“Children.”
I stared at him.
“Children?”
“Every generation, they searched for the genetic line.”
“Why?”
“To create a successor capable of accessing the original assets.”
I looked at Lily.
“And the children who didn't qualify?”
My father didn't answer.
I already knew.
They disappeared.
My phone vibrated.
Another message.
TWENTY MINUTES.
Then:
BRING LILY.
Then:
COME ALONE.
I looked at the photograph again.
Noah was sitting beside the man who claimed to be the real Adrian.
Victor stood behind them.
But something was wrong.
I zoomed in.
Victor's hand was resting on the man's shoulder.
Not threatening.
Protective.
I showed Alexander.
“Look.”
He stared.
“They're working together.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor hated him.”
“Maybe they made a deal.”
Alexander shook his head.
“That man would never work with Victor.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor destroyed his family.”
I looked at him.
“You're telling me Victor kidnapped his own enemy's son?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Alexander's face changed.
“He didn't kidnap Noah.”
I froze.
“What?”
“He took him willingly.”
“No.”
“Look at the photograph.”
I did.
Noah's hands weren't tied.
There was no weapon pointed at him.
He wasn't crying.
He looked scared, but not restrained.
Alexander whispered:
“Noah went with him.”
My blood ran cold.
“Why would my son go with Victor?”
Alexander didn't answer.
I looked at Lily.
“Lily.”
She was staring at the floor.
“Did Noah ever tell you something?”
She nodded.
“What?”
“He said he remembered a man.”
“Which man?”
“The man who looked like Daddy.”
I froze.
“When?”
“Last week.”
“What did he say?”
“He said the man visited him when he was little.”
I looked at Lena.
“Did you know?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Lily continued.
“He told Noah something.”
“What?”
She looked at me.
“He said…”
Her voice became tiny.
“‘Your dad isn't the one who came home.’”
I felt cold.
I looked at my hands.
My face.
My reflection in the window.
Who was I?
If the memories had been replaced…
If the identity had been constructed…
Then what exactly had I been living?
Twenty years of memories.
Twenty years of love.
Twenty years of believing I was a husband.
A father.
A son.
Could all of it be fake?
Lily touched my hand.
“Daddy?”
I looked at her.
“I'm still your daddy.”
She nodded.
“That's all I care about.”
Her words nearly broke me.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?”
A familiar voice.
“Adrian.”
The real Adrian.
“Where are you?”
“Close.”
“Give me Noah.”
“No.”
“Then what do you want?”
“Lily.”
“No.”
“Then Noah dies.”
“You won't hurt him.”
“You don't know me.”
“I know enough.”
He laughed.
“You don't know anything about me.”
“Then tell me.”
Silence.
Then:
“I was twelve when they took me.”
My chest tightened.
“They put me in a room.”
“I watched them erase my name.”
“I watched them give my identity to another boy.”
“To you.”
I said nothing.
“They told me you would replace me.”
“I didn't ask for this.”
“I know.”
His voice softened.
“That was the worst part.”
“What?”
“You were innocent.”
I swallowed.
“Then why are you doing this?”
“Because they gave you my life.”
“I didn't steal it.”
“No.”
“You were just the one they chose.”
He paused.
“And I was the one they abandoned.”
I heard Noah's voice in the background.
“Dad?”
I froze.
“That's my son.”
“He thinks you're his father.”
“I am.”
The real Adrian laughed.
“That's what they taught you.”
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Let me talk to him.”
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“Because I want you to understand.”
“Understand what?”
“You aren't the enemy.”
“Then who is?”
“Victor.”
I looked at the photograph.
“Then why are you standing beside him?”
“Because I need him.”
“For what?”
“To destroy Elias.”
I froze.
“You're working against Elias?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Elias created the system.”
“And Victor?”
“Victor wants to control it.”
“And you?”
“I want to burn it.”
I didn't know what to say.
The real Adrian continued:
“Lily is the only person who can destroy the trust.”
“Why?”
“Because she wasn't registered.”
“Neither was Emma.”
“Emma was registered.”
I looked at my daughter.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Through you.”
I felt confused.
“What does that mean?”
“Your bloodline.”
He paused.
“Emma carries the old marker.”
I looked at Emma.
She was listening.
“But Lily doesn't?”
“No.”
“Then why does she matter?”
“Because she carries something different.”
“What?”
“Choice.”
I almost laughed.
“Choice?”
“Yes.”
“The system can't predict her.”
“That's why Elias wants her.”
“And Victor?”
“He wants her too.”
“Why?”
“Because if Lily destroys the trust, Victor loses everything.”
I stared at the phone.
“Then why did you ask me to bring her?”
“Because I need her.”
“No.”
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
“I need her to open the final vault.”
I looked at my father.
His face had gone white.
“You know about this.”
He nodded.
“Where is it?”
The real Adrian answered:
“Under the Cole family cemetery.”
I froze.
“The cemetery?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because that's where Elias buried the original records.”
“Then let's go.”
“Alone.”
“No.”
“If you bring anyone else, Noah dies.”
I looked at my family.
My children.
My wife.
My parents.
Alexander.
Everyone had lied.
But Noah was still my son.
I couldn't risk him.
“I'll come.”
“Bring Lily.”
“No.”
“Then no deal.”
I closed my eyes.
“Fine.”
I ended the call.
Lena immediately grabbed my arm.
“You can't take her.”
“I have to.”
“No.”
“Lena.”
“She'll be killed.”
“I know.”
“Then don't go.”
I looked at her.
“Would you rather I leave Noah?”
She cried.
“No.”
“Neither would I.”
My father stepped forward.
“I'll go with you.”
“No.”
“Adrian.”
“You lied to me for twenty years.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“You failed.”
He flinched.
I turned to Alexander.
“You stay with Emma.”
He nodded.
“Marcus?”
“I'm coming.”
“No.”
“Sir.”
“I need you here.”
He looked confused.
“Why?”
“Because if I don't come back…”
I looked at Lily.
“…you get them out.”
Marcus nodded.
Lena pulled me aside.
“You're not bringing Lily.”
I looked at her.
“I have to.”
“She'll hate you.”
“She may.”
“She'll never forgive you.”
“I know.”
“But you're still doing it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Noah is waiting for me.”
Lena stared at me.
Then she whispered:
“Then bring both of them home.”
I nodded.
We left.
The cemetery was forty minutes away.
The entire drive, Lily sat silently beside me.
Finally she asked:
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“If I go…”
“You're coming back.”
“What if I don't?”
I looked at her.
“You will.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I'm coming with you.”
She smiled faintly.
Then she reached into her pocket.
She pulled out her bracelet.
“Emma told me something.”
“What?”
“She said the bracelet isn't a key.”
I frowned.
“Then what is it?”
Lily turned it over.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a tiny piece of metal.
Engraved with a name.
ADRIAN COLE
I stared.
“Where did that come from?”
Lily shook her head.
“It was always there.”
My stomach tightened.
Then I noticed something else.
A fingerprint.
Burned into the metal.
Mine.
I touched it.
The bracelet beeped.
A hidden screen appeared.
IDENTITY VERIFIED.
Then:
ORIGINAL HEIR CONFIRMED.
I stared at the words.
Lily looked at me.
“Daddy…”
“What?”
The screen changed.
SECONDARY HEIR DETECTED.
Then another name appeared.
EMMA COLE.
I froze.
Then a third line appeared.
TERMINAL HEIR: LILY COLE.
My blood went cold.
Three heirs.
Three children.
And suddenly I understood why everyone had been lying.
The system wasn't choosing one child.
It had been waiting for all three.
We arrived at the cemetery.
The gates were already open.
I stopped the car.
Lily looked outside.
“Someone's here.”
I saw the silhouettes.
Three men.
Then five.
Then ten.
And standing in the center was the real Adrian.
Beside him was Noah.
And behind them stood Victor.
I stepped out.
Victor smiled.
“You came.”
I looked at Noah.
“Let him go.”
Victor shook his head.
“Not yet.”
The real Adrian stepped forward.
“Bring Lily.”
I opened the passenger door.
Lily stepped out.
Victor looked at her.
For the first time, fear crossed his face.
Not anger.
Not surprise.
Fear.
He whispered:
“She was never supposed to reach this age.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
Victor stared at Lily.
Then at me.
“You don't understand what she is.”
I stepped in front of my daughter.
“Then tell me.”
Victor's voice dropped.
“She isn't an heir.”
“Then what?”
He looked at the ground beneath our feet.
“She is the reason the trust was created.”
The cemetery fell silent.
Then the ground beneath Lily's feet began to vibrate.
A stone tomb opened behind her.
A hidden staircase descended into darkness.
Victor stepped backward.
The real Adrian stared at Lily.
Noah whispered:
“Dad…”
I looked down.
A screen had appeared inside the tomb.
Three names illuminated one after another.
ADRIAN.
EMMA.
LILY.
Then a final message appeared:
ALL THREE REQUIRED.
The real Adrian's face changed.
Victor raised his weapon.
My father shouted from behind me:
“DON'T LET HIM OPEN IT!”
I turned.
My father was running toward us.
Victor aimed at him.
A gunshot echoed through the cemetery.
My father fell.
“DAD!”
I ran toward him.
Then I heard Victor whisper:
“Now you finally understand.”
I turned.
Victor was holding Noah.
And the real Adrian was holding Lily.
I froze.
Both children were between them.
Then Victor smiled.
“The final vault doesn't need one heir.”
He looked at me.
May you like
“It needs all three.”
And the tomb doors slammed shut behind us.
