Chapter 7: The Hand on Clara’s Shoulder

Clara froze.
A hand rested gently on her shoulder.
Not gripping.
Not hurting.
Just resting there.
But somehow, that was worse.
Because everyone in the room had gone silent.
Clara slowly turned her head.
And saw Vanessa.
The woman smiled.
“Don't be afraid, sweetheart.”
Clara immediately stepped away.
Vanessa's hand dropped.
“Stay away from me.”
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“Clara, you don't understand what you've heard.”
“I heard your voice.”
“No.”
“You cut Mommy's brakes.”
“I didn't.”
Clara pointed at the recorder.
“You said it.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“That recording was edited.”
Daniel suddenly grabbed Vanessa's arm.
“Stop.”
She turned toward him.
“You know that's not what happened.”
Daniel's eyes were filled with fear.
“Not here.”
Clara stared at them.
“What are you hiding?”
Nobody answered.
Then Evelyn moved toward Clara.
“Come to me.”
Clara hesitated.
Her mother's words from the recording echoed in her head.
The person she must fear most is the one standing beside her right now.
Clara looked at Evelyn.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at Daniel.
She didn't know whom to trust.
Evelyn noticed the fear in her daughter's eyes.
“Clara, I need you to listen to me.”
“Why should I?”
Evelyn stopped.
“Because I'm your mother.”
“You lied too.”
“I did.”
Evelyn's voice broke.
“I lied about many things.”
“Like what?”
Evelyn looked around the room.
Then she whispered:
“Like the night you were born.”
Clara frowned.
“What about it?”
Richard suddenly stepped forward.
“Don't.”
Evelyn ignored him.
“Your grandmother didn't leave you forty-two million dollars.”
Clara stared.
“Then how much?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Money was never the real inheritance.”
Jonathan laughed.
“Finally.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“The money was bait.”
Clara's confusion deepened.
“Bait for what?”
Evelyn pointed toward the black box.
“The ledger.”
“But you said the ledger was evidence.”
“It is.”
“What does it contain?”
Evelyn took a breath.
“Names.”
“Whose names?”
“Everyone who participated in what happened to our family.”
Clara looked at Richard.
“Grandpa?”
“Yes.”
“Daddy?”
“Yes.”
“Vanessa?”
Evelyn hesitated.
Then nodded.
“And Jonathan?”
Silence.
Clara looked at Jonathan.
He didn't answer.
That silence was enough.
Clara stepped backward.
“You're all involved.”
Jonathan's face hardened.
“You don't understand.”
“I understand that everybody lied to me.”
Daniel suddenly shouted:
“Enough!”
His voice echoed through the underground room.
He looked at Clara.
“Your mother is using you.”
Evelyn turned.
“Don't you dare.”
Daniel ignored her.
“She has been manipulating you since the moment she returned.”
Clara stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because she needs you.”
“For what?”
Daniel pointed toward the safe.
“To open that.”
Clara looked at the box.
“Why?”
“Because your blood gives her access.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“That is not why I came back.”
“Then why?”
“To save her.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You had three years.”
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“I had three years to stay alive.”
Daniel looked away.
Clara suddenly noticed something.
A small cut on Daniel's hand.
Blood.
Fresh blood.
She remembered something else.
The night of the wedding.
Daniel had disappeared for several minutes before the ceremony.
He had come back with that same cut.
“Daddy?”
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
“Where did you get that?”
He glanced at his hand.
“This?”
“Yes.”
“Broken glass.”
“When?”
“Tonight.”
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
Daniel's expression changed.
“You had it before the wedding.”
Silence.
Vanessa looked at him.
Daniel said nothing.
Clara stepped closer.
“You were in Mommy's room.”
Daniel's face became pale.
“I told you not to go in there.”
Clara's eyes widened.
“What did you find?”
Daniel looked toward Evelyn.
Evelyn whispered:
“Tell her.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“I found nothing.”
“You're lying.”
“I said I found nothing!”
Clara flinched.
Then the lights suddenly went out.
Again.
Complete darkness.
Someone screamed.
A gunshot exploded.
Then another.
Clara dropped to the floor.
“Mommy!”
“I’m here!”
Evelyn grabbed Clara.
“Stay down!”
Someone crashed into the table.
The black box fell.
Clara heard Jonathan shout:
“Who's shooting?”
A man's voice answered from the darkness.
“Everyone down!”
Thomas.
Then a third gunshot.
Glass shattered.
Clara crawled toward her mother.
But someone grabbed her wrist.
She screamed.
“Let go!”
The hand tightened.
“Clara!”
It was Vanessa.
“Come with me!”
“No!”
Vanessa pulled her into the darkness.
“Your mother is going to get you killed!”
Clara fought.
“Let me go!”
Vanessa dragged her toward the stairs.
Then Clara saw something.
A small silver bird hanging around Vanessa's neck.
Not her mother's necklace.
Another one.
Clara stopped struggling.
“Where did you get that?”
Vanessa froze.
Clara stared at it.
“That belonged to Mommy.”
Vanessa slowly covered the necklace.
“No.”
“I saw it in her things.”
Vanessa's eyes became cold.
“You saw nothing.”
“You have two necklaces.”
Vanessa grabbed Clara's face.
“Listen to me.”
Her voice was shaking.
“If you want your mother alive, you will do exactly what I say.”
Clara's heart pounded.
“What do you want?”
“The ledger.”
“It's downstairs.”
“No.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“Your mother has a second copy.”
Clara stared.
“How do you know?”
“Because I helped her hide it.”
Clara's eyes widened.
“You helped Mommy?”
Vanessa's expression changed.
For a moment, Clara saw something that looked like regret.
Then it disappeared.
“Not everything you've been told is true.”
“Then tell me the truth.”
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
“I will.”
A loud crash came from downstairs.
Vanessa grabbed Clara's hand.
“After we get out.”
They ran.
At the top of the staircase, Clara suddenly stopped.
“Wait.”
“What?”
“I forgot something.”
“What?”
“The recorder.”
Vanessa's face changed.
“You don't need it.”
“Yes, I do.”
Clara pulled away.
Vanessa reached for her.
But Clara ran back down.
“Clara!”
The room was still dark.
She could hear people fighting.
She dropped to her knees.
Her fingers searched across the floor.
Nothing.
Then she touched something cold.
The recorder.
She grabbed it.
But before she could stand, a flashlight turned on.
Daniel was standing several feet away.
His face was covered in blood.
“Give me that.”
Clara backed away.
“No.”
“Clara.”
“You're afraid of it.”
Daniel slowly raised his gun.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
His voice became quieter.
“Sweetheart, you don't understand.”
“You're afraid because it tells the truth.”
Daniel's eyes filled with something close to despair.
“Please.”
Clara stared at him.
Then she pressed the play button.
Daniel's recorded voice filled the darkness.
“I wasn't the one who pushed her.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
“Richard was there.”
Richard shouted from somewhere behind them:
“Turn it off!”
Clara kept listening.
Then came the final line.
“And he didn't act alone.”
Silence.
Clara looked at Daniel.
“Who helped Grandpa?”
Daniel didn't answer.
“Daddy?”
Still nothing.
Then Evelyn's voice came from the darkness.
“Daniel.”
He slowly turned.
Evelyn stood at the bottom of the stairs.
She was holding a gun.
“Tell her.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Evelyn…”
“Tell our daughter what happened.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I can't.”
“Then I will.”
Evelyn took a step forward.
“Richard didn't cause the accident.”
Clara's heart stopped.
“But the recording said—”
“I know.”
Evelyn looked at the recorder.
“Because the recording was made to make you believe he did.”
Clara stared.
“What?”
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
“Tell her who was driving.”
Daniel's face crumpled.
“No.”
“Tell her.”
He whispered:
“Vanessa.”
Clara turned toward the staircase.
Vanessa was standing there.
She looked devastated.
“I didn't mean to kill her.”
Clara's eyes widened.
“What?”
Vanessa began crying.
“Your mother wasn't supposed to be in the car.”
Evelyn's voice became ice-cold.
“You knew she was.”
“No.”
“You knew.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I thought Daniel would stop her.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Clara looked between them.
“So you both knew?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.”
Then the mansion alarm suddenly began screaming.
A red light flashed.
Thomas ran into the room.
“We have a problem.”
Evelyn turned.
“What?”
“The police are here.”
Thomas looked at Clara.
“Not the corrupt ones.”
“The real police?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn exhaled.
“Finally.”
But Thomas shook his head.
“They're not here for Daniel.”
“Then who?”
Thomas looked toward the window.
“They're here for you.”
Evelyn's face went pale.
“Why?”
Thomas handed her a document.
“There's a warrant for your arrest.”
Clara stared.
“For what?”
Thomas looked at Evelyn.
“Murder.”
Clara's heart sank.
“Whose murder?”
Thomas didn't answer.
The front doors of the mansion exploded open.
Police officers stormed inside.
And a voice shouted:
“Evelyn Whitmore, you're under arrest for the murder of Daniel Whitmore.”
Clara turned.
Daniel was standing right behind her.
Alive.
But then she realized what the officer had said.
The murder of Daniel Whitmore.
She looked at Daniel.
He was alive.
So why was there a warrant claiming he was dead?
Daniel slowly smiled.
And Clara understood.
May you like
The police weren't arresting her mother for something that had happened tonight.
They were arresting her for something that was supposed to happen tomorrow.
