CHAPTER 2 THE SECRET ROOM

Clara didn't move.

She stood inside the narrow passage with the dead phone pressed against her chest.

On the other side of the hidden wall, Daniel was calling her name.

“Clara.”

His voice was gentle.

Too gentle.

“Sweetheart, you don't need to be afraid.”

Vanessa's voice followed.

“Your father only wants to talk.”

Clara looked at Mr. Graves.

The old butler had gone completely still.

“Don't answer them,” he whispered.

“Where does this passage go?”

“To the old chapel.”

“Can they get inside?”

Graves shook his head.

“Not unless they know about the second door.”

Clara swallowed.

“Do they know?”

Before Graves could answer, something slammed against the hidden panel.

Clara jumped.

Daniel shouted:

“Open this door!”

Another blow.

The bookshelf shook.

Graves grabbed Clara's wrist.

“Run.”

They moved through the passage.

It was so narrow Clara had to turn sideways.

Dust filled the air.

The walls smelled like damp stone.

She could hear Daniel pounding behind them.

“Graves!”

The old butler didn't look back.

“You have to understand something, Clara.”

“What?”

“Your mother never disappeared because of an accident.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Graves stopped.

He turned toward her.

“You don't know.”

His expression was filled with something Clara had never seen in him before.

Fear.

“Your mother discovered something.”

“What?”

“Something about your father.”

Clara stared at him.

“Mommy told me Daddy was dangerous.”

Graves nodded.

“She was right.”

A metallic sound echoed behind them.

The hidden door had opened.

Graves grabbed Clara again.

“Keep moving.”

They reached the end of the passage.

Graves pushed against a stone panel.

Nothing happened.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

“What's wrong?”

“The mechanism.”

“What mechanism?”

“It hasn't been used in years.”

Behind them, footsteps entered the passage.

Daniel.

They were coming closer.

Clara looked at Graves.

“Mr. Graves.”

“Quiet.”

“Please.”

He pressed his palms against the stone.

Then he whispered something Clara couldn't understand.

The wall clicked.

A section slid sideways.

Cold night air rushed into the passage.

They stepped into the abandoned chapel.

Clara recognized it immediately.

It had been part of the Whitmore estate before Daniel renovated the mansion.

Nobody used it anymore.

Moonlight spilled through the broken stained-glass windows.

Graves closed the secret door.

“Stay here.”

“Where are you going?”

“To stop them from following us.”

“No!”

Clara grabbed his sleeve.

“You said Mommy is alive.”

“She is.”

“Then take me to her.”

Graves looked at her.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because if your mother comes back too early, everyone she loves will be in danger.”

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

“She called me.”

“I know.”

“She said Daddy didn't kill her alone.”

Graves looked toward the chapel doors.

“That means she knows they've discovered the evidence.”

“What evidence?”

Before he could answer, the chapel doors opened.

Clara screamed.

A man stepped inside.

He was tall.

Wearing a dark suit.

His face was unfamiliar.

Graves immediately stepped in front of Clara.

“Who are you?”

The man raised both hands.

“I'm not here to hurt her.”

“Then leave.”

The man looked at Clara.

“My name is Thomas Reed.”

Clara stared at him.

“Are you with my mother?”

Thomas hesitated.

“Yes.”

Graves narrowed his eyes.

“Prove it.”

Thomas reached into his jacket.

Graves immediately grabbed a fireplace poker.

“Slowly.”

Thomas pulled out a small envelope.

He placed it on the floor.

“Your mother told me to give this to Clara if the wedding happened.”

Clara stepped forward.

Graves stopped her.

“I'll open it.”

He picked up the envelope.

There was no name on it.

Only a symbol.

A silver bird.

Graves opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Clara stared.

It showed her mother.

Alive.

Standing in front of a building.

And beside her was a man Clara had never seen before.

Underneath the photograph was a handwritten sentence.

HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS WHERE THE MONEY WENT.

Graves looked at Thomas.

“What money?”

Thomas didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Clara.

“Your mother found proof that Daniel had been stealing from the Whitmore Foundation.”

Clara frowned.

“My father's company?”

“No.”

Thomas shook his head.

“The foundation belonged to your mother.”

Graves went pale.

Thomas continued.

“Evelyn discovered that millions of dollars had disappeared over several years.”

“Who took it?”

Thomas looked toward the chapel doors.

“Daniel wasn't working alone.”

Clara's stomach tightened.

“Vanessa?”

Thomas didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Vanessa was the reason your mother started investigating.”

Clara remembered the necklace.

“Why?”

“Because Vanessa had been married before.”

Graves suddenly interrupted.

“Enough.”

Thomas looked at him.

“It's time she knew.”

“She is nine.”

“She already knows her father tried to destroy her mother.”

Clara stared between them.

“What happened to Vanessa's first husband?”

Neither man answered.

Clara's voice became louder.

“What happened?”

Thomas finally spoke.

“He died.”

“How?”

“A car accident.”

Clara's eyes widened.

“Like Mommy?”

Thomas looked at Graves.

Then back at Clara.

“Exactly.”

The chapel seemed to grow colder.

Clara stepped backward.

“No.”

Thomas continued quietly.

“Your mother discovered that the two accidents were connected.”

“Connected how?”

“Same road.”

Clara stared at him.

“That's impossible.”

“Your mother didn't think so.”

Thomas reached into his jacket again.

This time, he pulled out a small flash drive.

“She copied everything.”

Graves looked at it.

“Where is the laptop?”

“Gone.”

“Who took it?”

Thomas looked toward the mansion.

“Daniel.”

A loud crash suddenly echoed from outside.

Everyone froze.

Thomas turned toward the window.

“They found us.”

Graves looked terrified.

“Who?”

Thomas whispered:

“Daniel.”

Clara heard footsteps approaching the chapel.

Then Daniel's voice came through the locked doors.

“Clara.”

He sounded exhausted.

Almost heartbroken.

“Please come outside.”

Clara didn't move.

Daniel continued.

“I know what Graves told you.”

Her eyes widened.

Graves looked at Thomas.

“How?”

Daniel laughed softly.

“Because I know every secret passage in this house.”

The chapel doors shook.

Once.

Twice.

Then Daniel shouted:

“Open the door!”

Thomas moved toward Clara.

“There's another exit.”

Graves shook his head.

“Not anymore.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel sealed it.”

Thomas looked at Clara.

“Then we fight our way out.”

Graves grabbed him.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you don't understand.”

Graves pointed toward the altar.

“There is another person in this chapel.”

Clara stared.

“What?”

The old butler slowly walked toward the altar.

He stopped.

Then lifted the white cloth covering an old wooden box.

Inside was a small recorder.

He pressed a button.

A woman's voice filled the chapel.

Evelyn.

“If you're hearing this, Daniel knows.”

Clara covered her mouth.

Her mother's recording continued.

“I need you to understand something. I didn't disappear because I wanted to leave you.”

A pause.

Then:

“I disappeared because someone inside our family tried to kill me.”

Clara began crying.

The recording continued.

“And if Daniel has married Vanessa, then the plan has entered its final stage.”

Thomas looked at Graves.

“What plan?”

Evelyn's voice answered before Graves could.

“They are going to kill Clara next.”

Clara stopped breathing.

The chapel doors exploded inward.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

Vanessa was beside him.

Behind them were two men Clara had never seen before.

Daniel looked directly at his daughter.

His face was no longer gentle.

“I'm sorry, Clara.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You heard too much.”

Thomas raised his hands.

“Stay back.”

One of the men pulled a gun.

Graves pushed Clara behind the altar.

“Run!”

A gunshot shattered the chapel.

Clara screamed.

The bullet struck the stone wall above her head.

Thomas tackled the gunman.

Graves grabbed Clara and pulled her toward the altar.

“There's a tunnel beneath it.”

Clara looked down.

“Where does it go?”

Graves whispered:

“To your mother's house.”

Clara froze.

“My mother has a house?”

“Not anymore.”

He pulled a hidden lever.

The altar moved.

A dark staircase appeared beneath it.

Clara stared into the darkness.

Then she heard Vanessa scream:

“Don't let her escape!”

Clara ran down the stairs.

Behind her, chaos erupted.

Another gunshot.

Someone shouted.

The altar slammed shut.

Clara was alone.

She stumbled down the stone staircase.

At the bottom was a small underground room.

There was a desk.

A lamp.

A chair.

And dozens of photographs covering the walls.

Clara walked closer.

Her breath caught.

The photographs showed her mother.

Watching Daniel.

Watching Vanessa.

Watching their mansion.

Watching Clara.

Then Clara saw one photograph that made her blood turn cold.

It had been taken three nights ago.

It showed Clara sleeping in her bedroom.

Someone had been standing in the doorway.

The photograph had been taken from inside the house.

Clara dropped it.

Then she noticed something written on the back.

She picked it up.

Five words.

I WAS THERE THAT NIGHT.

Clara turned around.

Someone was standing in the underground room.

A woman.

Her face was hidden in the darkness.

Clara couldn't move.

The woman stepped forward.

Moonlight from a tiny basement window touched her face.

Clara's lips trembled.

“Mommy?”

The woman smiled through tears.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

Clara ran toward her.

But Evelyn didn't hug her.

Instead, she grabbed Clara's shoulders and whispered:

“We have to leave.”

“Why?”

“Because your father knows I'm alive.”

A noise came from above them.

Footsteps.

Evelyn looked toward the ceiling.

Then her face changed.

“They're here already.”

Clara clutched her hand.

“Who?”

Evelyn stared at the hidden staircase.

“The person who betrayed me.”

Then the basement door slowly opened.

A man's voice came from the darkness.

“Hello, Evelyn.”

Evelyn's face went white.

Clara recognized the voice.

It was Daniel.

But Daniel wasn't alone.

Another voice followed.

Vanessa.

And then a third voice spoke.

A voice Clara had never heard before.

“Three years hiding in the dark, Evelyn.”

A pause.

“Did you really think we wouldn't find you?”

Evelyn pulled Clara behind her.

The third voice laughed.

“You should have stayed dead.”

And then the lights came on.

Clara saw who was standing beside Daniel.

May you like

And she realized the person her mother had feared most...

was someone Clara knew.
