Chapter 8: The Heir's First Battle

The name on the screen seemed impossible.

Daniel Crawford.

Eleanor's nephew.

A member of the family.

Someone who had walked through the Crawford estate freely.

Someone who had spoken to Claire with kindness.

Someone who had looked at her as if she belonged there.

And now...

Someone connected to the betrayal.

Claire stared at the security footage.

Daniel stood inside the private archive room.

His face was clear.

There was no mistake.

"How long?"

Eleanor's voice was quiet.

But everyone in the room knew that quiet was dangerous.

Thomas looked at the data on his tablet.

"The access records show he entered the archive three times in the last month."

Eleanor's expression changed.

"Three times?"

Thomas nodded.

"He wasn't searching randomly."

He looked at Claire.

"He was looking for something specific."

Claire felt a cold feeling in her chest.

"What?"

Thomas hesitated.

"The original documents about your disappearance."

Silence.

Because everyone understood what that meant.

Daniel wasn't curious.

He wasn't investigating.

He was hiding something.

The Crawford estate had always been built on trust.

Family members shared information.

They protected each other.

They stood together against the outside world.

But now Claire saw something different.

A family built on secrets.

A family where smiles could hide knives.

Eleanor walked toward the communication system.

"Call Daniel."

Thomas looked surprised.

"Here?"

"Yes."

"Ms. Crawford, if he is involved..."

Eleanor interrupted.

"Then I want him to know we already know."

Claire watched her mother carefully.

For the first time, she saw the woman behind the billionaire image.

Not a CEO.

Not an empire builder.

A mother.

A mother who had been betrayed again.

Twenty minutes later, Daniel Crawford arrived.

He was in his early thirties.

Well-dressed.

Confident.

The kind of person who seemed naturally comfortable around wealth.

When he entered the room, his expression was calm.

Almost too calm.

"Aunt Eleanor."

He looked around.

Then noticed Claire.

His smile disappeared slightly.

"I see."

Eleanor didn't respond.

Daniel looked at Claire.

"So it finally happened."

Claire frowned.

"What?"

"You found her."

The way he said it bothered her.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Almost like he had been waiting.

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Daniel."

His expression changed.

"Yes?"

"Why did you access the archives?"

A few seconds passed.

Then Daniel sighed.

"I knew this day would come."

Claire looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel looked at her.

"That means everyone is about to learn the truth."

Eleanor's eyes narrowed.

"What truth?"

Daniel walked closer.

"The truth that nobody in this family wants to admit."

He looked around the room.

"The Crawford family destroyed itself long before Claire came back."

Daniel placed a folder on the table.

Not old.

Not damaged.

New.

"This is what I found in the archives."

Eleanor opened it.

Inside were financial records.

Old communication files.

And documents related to the year Claire disappeared.

Claire watched her mother's expression change as she read.

"What is it?"

Eleanor didn't answer immediately.

Thomas looked over the documents.

Then his face became serious.

"Impossible."

Claire looked at him.

"What?"

Thomas pointed at one page.

"The investigation was manipulated."

Everyone froze.

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

Claire looked at him.

"By who?"

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

"That's the question."

Eleanor's hands tightened.

"What are you saying?"

Daniel took a breath.

"I'm saying Charles wasn't the only person hiding the truth."

The room became silent.

Claire felt her heart sink.

Another secret.

Another betrayal.

How many more were there?

Daniel looked at Claire.

"You want to know why nobody found you?"

Claire nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"Because someone inside the Crawford family made sure the investigation failed."

Eleanor looked shocked.

"Who?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at the old letter from Claire's father.

"The person who betrayed your family wasn't just looking for money."

Claire stepped closer.

"Then what did they want?"

Daniel looked directly at her.

"They wanted you erased."

The words echoed.

Claire touched the bracelet.

"Why?"

Daniel's expression became complicated.

"Because you weren't just the heir."

Eleanor looked confused.

"What are you talking about?"

Daniel opened another document.

A document that made Eleanor's face lose color.

"This."

She took the paper.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then she whispered:

"No..."

Claire looked between them.

"What is it?"

Eleanor didn't answer.

Daniel did.

"When your father created the family trust, he changed the inheritance rules."

Claire frowned.

"What rules?"

Daniel looked at her.

"The Crawford empire doesn't automatically go to the oldest surviving family member."

He paused.

"It goes to the person your father personally selected."

Claire felt confused.

"Who?"

Daniel looked at her.

"You."

The room went silent.

Claire stared.

"Me?"

Daniel nodded.

"Your father knew there were people inside the family who wanted control."

He pointed at the document.

"He created a private trust that could only be activated when you returned."

Eleanor looked at the paper.

"I never knew about this."

Daniel answered:

"Because your brother hid it."

Everyone turned toward Charles.

For the first time, Charles looked genuinely nervous.

Claire looked at him.

"You knew."

Charles remained silent.

"You knew my father protected me."

Charles finally spoke.

"I knew he was suspicious."

"And you still tried to erase me."

Charles's expression hardened.

"You don't understand the consequences."

Claire stepped forward.

"No."

Her voice was stronger than before.

"I understand perfectly."

The woman who had once apologized for taking up space in Richard's life was gone.

The woman standing now was different.

"I was a child."

She looked at Charles.

"You made me disappear because you wanted something that wasn't yours."

Then she looked at Daniel.

"And now I find out everyone has been fighting over something I never asked for."

Daniel looked away.

Because that was the truth.

Claire never wanted billions.

She never wanted power.

She wanted a family.

That night, Claire stood alone on the balcony.

The city stretched endlessly below.

Eleanor joined her.

"You handled that well."

Claire smiled faintly.

"I didn't feel like I did."

"You did."

Claire looked at her.

"I feel angry."

"You should."

"I feel betrayed."

"You have every right."

Claire looked at the lights.

"I spent my whole life trying to prove I was enough."

Eleanor became quiet.

"And now?"

Claire touched the bracelet.

"Now I find out I was always more than enough."

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"You were always my daughter."

For a moment, everything felt peaceful.

Until Claire's phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

Only one sentence.

You think you know why you disappeared. You don't. Ask your mother what happened the night you were born.

Claire froze.

Eleanor noticed.

"What is it?"

Claire slowly turned the screen toward her.

The color disappeared from Eleanor's face.

Because she knew the number.

She knew who sent it.

And she knew the secret hidden behind those words.

"The night you were born..."

Eleanor whispered.

"Was the one thing I promised I would never tell anyone."

Claire stared at her.

"What happened?"

Eleanor looked away.

For the first time, fear appeared in her eyes.

Not fear for herself.

Fear of losing Claire again.

"Claire..."

Her voice trembled.

"Your birth was not as simple as you were told."

The city lights continued shining below them.

But inside the Crawford estate...

another secret had just awakened.

A secret older than the kidnapping.

Older than Richard.

Older than the betrayal.

May you like

A secret about the day Claire entered the world.

And the reason someone wanted her gone before she was even born.
