Chapter 10: The Man Who Watched Claire Grow Up

The photograph rested on the table.

A single piece of paper.

A frozen moment from twenty-seven years ago.

But to Claire, it felt heavier than any document she had ever held.

Because the man standing in the corner of the picture was not a stranger.

He was Alexander Sterling.

Richard Sterling's father.

The same man whose family had been connected to her disappearance.

The same man whose actions had destroyed two families.

And now Claire had proof.

He had been there from the beginning.

At the hospital.

On the day she was born.

Claire looked at Eleanor.

"Why was he there?"

Eleanor didn't answer immediately.

Because the truth was not something she wanted to remember.

It was something she had spent years trying to bury.

"I thought he was there because of business."

Claire frowned.

"Business?"

Eleanor nodded slowly.

"Before everything happened, the Crawford and Sterling families worked together."

She looked at the photograph.

"Your father trusted Alexander."

Claire looked down.

"My father trusted everyone."

The sadness in her voice hurt Eleanor.

Because she knew Claire wasn't only talking about William.

She was talking about herself.

About every person who had betrayed that trust.

Eleanor continued.

"Alexander was invited to the hospital because he wanted to congratulate us."

Claire stared at the photograph.

"But he wasn't just visiting."

"No."

Eleanor's voice became quieter.

"He was studying."

The security team searched through every record connected to Dr. Adrian Vale.

Within hours, they discovered something disturbing.

Dr. Vale had disappeared from Chicago shortly after Claire's birth.

His medical license was transferred.

His records were incomplete.

And every trace of him seemed carefully erased.

Thomas placed the report on the table.

"Someone helped him disappear."

Eleanor looked at the documents.

"Who?"

Thomas shook his head.

"We don't know yet."

Claire looked at the photograph.

"Maybe he can tell us."

Everyone looked at her.

"Dr. Vale."

Thomas nodded.

"We will find him."

But Claire remained focused on the photograph.

"Why would Alexander Sterling watch me being born?"

No one answered.

Because that question led to something darker.

A possibility nobody wanted to admit.

Maybe Alexander Sterling's plan had not started after Claire disappeared.

Maybe it had started before.

Meanwhile, Richard Sterling was discovering that his father's secrets went deeper than he imagined.

He sat inside the old Sterling mansion.

The same place where Alexander had built his empire.

The same place where Richard had learned about power.

But now every memory felt different.

His childhood lessons.

His father's advice.

His obsession with winning.

Everything had a darker meaning.

His mother, Victoria, entered the room.

"You found out."

Richard looked at her.

"About what?"

"About Alexander."

Richard's expression changed.

"You knew."

Victoria sighed.

"Richard."

"No."

He stood.

"You knew everything."

Victoria remained silent.

That silence was enough.

Richard laughed bitterly.

"All my life, I thought father was preparing me to become successful."

He looked around the room.

"But he was preparing me to continue his plan."

Victoria looked away.

"Your father believed the Crawford empire belonged to us."

Richard shook his head.

"Belonged to us?"

His voice became angry.

"Claire was a person."

Victoria's expression hardened.

"You sound like you care about her."

Richard stopped.

Because he didn't know how to answer.

Did he care?

Yes.

Did he betray her?

Yes.

Could both be true?

That was the part he couldn't accept.

"I loved her."

Victoria looked at him.

"No."

Richard looked away.

"You loved the version of her that needed you."

The words cut deeply.

Because somewhere inside, Richard knew they were true.

At the Crawford estate, Claire finally met with Dr. Vale's former assistant.

A woman named Sophia Miller.

She had worked with him twenty-seven years earlier.

She arrived carrying a box of old documents.

"I have been afraid of this day."

Claire looked at her.

"Why?"

Sophia opened the box.

"Because I knew someone would eventually find the truth."

She removed an old notebook.

"Dr. Vale kept records."

Eleanor immediately stepped closer.

"What kind of records?"

"Everything."

Sophia looked at Claire.

"Your birth."

"The pressure from Alexander Sterling."

"The agreement."

Claire froze.

"Agreement?"

Sophia nodded.

"Alexander Sterling paid Dr. Vale."

The room became silent.

"For what?"

Sophia looked down.

"To access your medical information."

Eleanor's face changed.

"Why?"

Sophia hesitated.

"Because he wanted to know if you could inherit the Crawford empire."

Claire felt sick.

"He was already planning."

"Yes."

Sophia nodded.

"He believed the Crawford family would eventually collapse without a strong heir."

Claire looked at Eleanor.

"But I was healthy."

"Yes."

Sophia continued.

"But Alexander didn't believe that."

She opened another document.

"This was his private assessment."

Claire read the words.

The child must be removed before she becomes a threat.

Her hands trembled.

A baby.

She had been considered a threat as a baby.

Not because of something she did.

But because of what someone feared she could become.

Then Sophia revealed something even more shocking.

"There is one more thing."

Everyone looked at her.

Sophia pulled out an envelope.

"This was written by Dr. Vale."

Claire opened it.

Inside was a confession.

Alexander Sterling did not act alone.

Claire's heart stopped.

The letter continued.

There was someone inside the Crawford family who gave him information.

Eleanor stepped back.

"No."

Claire looked at her.

"Mom."

Eleanor shook her head.

"No."

But the fear in her eyes showed she understood.

Someone else.

Another person.

Another betrayal.

Sophia continued.

"Dr. Vale wrote one final note."

She pointed at the bottom.

Claire read it.

The person who helped Alexander was the only person who knew where the Crawford child would be that night.

Silence.

Because only a few people knew the details of Claire's movements.

Only family.

Only trusted people.

Only those closest to Eleanor.

Claire slowly looked around the room.

The enemy was not just outside.

It had never been.

That evening, Claire walked through the Crawford estate alone.

She needed space.

Her entire identity had changed.

She was a daughter.

An heir.

A survivor.

But she was also something else.

A target.

Her phone suddenly received another message.

Unknown number.

You are searching for the person who betrayed your family.

Claire stared.

Another message appeared.

But you should ask why your mother hid the truth about your father.

Claire froze.

Her father?

A third message appeared.

William Crawford did not die because of an accident.

The phone slipped slightly in her hand.

Claire looked toward the mansion.

Because if this was true...

Then the tragedy that destroyed her family was not only about her disappearance.

It was about her father's death.

A death everyone believed was already explained.

But now Claire had to question everything.

The kidnapping.

The betrayal.

The secrets.

And the man who had loved her before she ever knew him.

Her father.

William Crawford.

Because someone was telling her that the greatest lie of all...

was the story of how he died.
