Chapter 17 - The Last BetrayalMariana woke with a splitting headache.

She was alone.

No Mateo.

No Lucía.

No Gabriel.

Nothing but darkness.

“Hello?”

Her voice echoed.

A light turned on.

Rafael sat across from her.

He was strapped to a chair.

Blood dried along his forehead.

Mariana tried to stand.

“You're alive.”

“Unfortunately.”

“Where is my son?”

“Taken.”

“By whom?”

Rafael looked toward the ceiling.

“Everyone.”

Mariana's heart pounded.

“What happened?”

“Adrian activated the facility lockdown.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because he considers me a liability.”

Mariana stared.

“Did you know all of this would happen?”

“Yes.”

“You knew about the children.”

“Yes.”

“The structure.”

“Yes.”

“My mother.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Mateo could hear it.”

“Yes.”

Mariana stepped toward him.

“Why didn't you stop it?”

Rafael's eyes hardened.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of dying?”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“Of succeeding.”

Silence.

Mariana stared.

“What does that mean?”

“Every generation believed they were building the future.”

“But?”

“We built something that doesn't need us.”

The walls vibrated.

Mariana felt the sound in her bones.

Rafael whispered:

“Adrian thinks he's controlling the system.”

“He isn't.”

“No.”

“The structure is.”

“And who is controlling the structure?”

Rafael looked at Mariana.

“You.”

She stopped.

“What?”

“The sequence activated when you arrived.”

“That can't be.”

“You are the missing key.”

Mariana shook her head.

“No.”

“You are the reason your family kept you alive.”

“I thought I was the experiment.”

“You were the control.”

Mariana's mind raced.

“Why?”

“Because your mother's body rejected the sequence.”

“And mine?”

“You carried it naturally.”

Mariana thought of the memories.

The tests.

The lights.

The missing childhood.

“What did they do to me?”

“Nothing.”

“That makes no sense.”

“You activated it without machines.”

Mariana stared.

“Then what did Adrian mean?”

Rafael smiled bitterly.

“He means to force the system to accept him.”

“And Mateo?”

“Mateo is the bridge.”

Mariana swallowed.

“And Elena?”

“Backup.”

A blast shook the room.

The restraints around Rafael snapped.

He fell forward.

Mariana stepped back.

The door opened.

Tomas entered.

“Move.”

“Where is Mateo?”

“Below.”

“How far?”

“Too far.”

Mariana followed him through the facility.

They reached another chamber.

Mateo was inside.

Connected to dozens of cables.

Elena stood beside him.

Adrian watched from a control platform.

Lucía was restrained nearby.

Gabriel lay unconscious on the floor.

Mariana stepped forward.

“Release him.”

Adrian smiled.

“You came.”

“Release my son.”

“You still don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

“No.”

Adrian pressed a button.

Mateo screamed.

Mariana nearly lost control.

“Stop!”

“You are going to open the structure.”

“I won't.”

“You will.”

“Why?”

“Because every mother has a weakness.”

Mariana looked at Mateo.

Then at Adrian.

“You're wrong.”

He frowned.

“My weakness isn't my son.”

“What is it?”

Mariana stepped closer.

“My weakness was believing you were smarter than me.”

Adrian's face changed.

Mariana reached into her pocket.

She held up the memory card.

His expression went white.

“You thought your security team destroyed the only recording.”

Adrian stared.

“You don't have that.”

“I do.”

She smiled through the tears.

“And it streamed automatically.”

Adrian looked toward the monitors.

Every screen suddenly displayed the yacht footage.

Esteban.

Isabela.

The murder attempt.

The entire world could see it.

Adrian whispered:

“No.”

Mariana looked at him.

“You built Meridian.”

She pressed the card against the console.

“And I just built your prison.”

Then every alarm in the facility activated.

But the screen changed again.

A message appeared.

TRANSMISSION RECEIVED.

Mariana froze.

The words below appeared slowly.

SOURCE: PRESIDENTIAL ARCHIVE.

Then:

ADRIAN VALE AUTHORIZED.

Adrian stared at the screen.

“What?”

A second file opened.

A video from twenty years earlier.

Adrian was younger.

Standing beside the black door.

Beside him stood someone else.

A woman.

Mariana stared.

She recognized her immediately.

Isabela.

But she looked twenty years younger.

And she was holding a newborn.

Mariana's newborn.

Her daughter.

Adrian whispered:

“She wasn't supposed to survive.”

The video played.

The baby opened her eyes.

Blue.

Just like the structure.

May you like

Mariana's blood turned cold.

Because the baby's eyes looked exactly like Mateo's.
