Chapter 6 - The Woman on the ScreenDaniel ran.

The clock room was on the third floor.
The others followed.
When Daniel threw open the door, there was nobody inside.
Only an old grandfather clock.
Its hands were stopped at 11:17.
Sophie stared at the screen.
“She was there.”
“I know.”
“But now she's gone.”
Daniel walked to the clock.
The face was scratched.
11:17.
The same time written in the red ledger.
He pressed the glass.
Nothing.
Victor searched the floor.
Mara searched the walls.
Daniel examined the clock's wooden frame.
A faint red mark appeared beneath the pendulum.
He touched it.
The clock opened.
Inside was a tiny digital drive.
Victor whispered, “Your mother hid everything in plain sight.”
Daniel connected the drive to a laptop.
One file.
11-17-FINAL.
He clicked.
Eleanor appeared.
This time she was furious.
“Daniel, if you're watching this, I failed to stop them.”
She took a breath.
“The trust money is not being stolen for personal wealth.”
Daniel frowned.
“Then what?”
Eleanor continued.
“It is being moved because someone is preparing to claim control of the Vale family assets.”
Victor whispered, “A hostile transfer.”
Eleanor looked directly at the camera.
“They need Daniel declared financially irresponsible.”
Daniel's face tightened.
“They want control through guardianship.”
Mara stepped closer.
Eleanor continued.
“And Sophie is the key.”
Daniel looked at his daughter.
“Why her?”
“Because the trust agreement contains a clause that activates when the beneficiary is a minor and the parent is declared incapable of managing assets.”
Daniel's stomach turned.
“Who activates it?”
Eleanor's voice dropped.
“The executor.”
Victor's face went white.
Daniel slowly turned.
“You.”
Victor didn't answer.
Eleanor continued.
“Victor Hale has controlled my legal documents for decades. I trusted him once. That was my mistake.”
Victor stepped backward.
“Daniel, listen to me.”
“Don't.”
The video froze.
Then the screen went black.
A new file appeared.
MARA-STATEMENT.
Mara stared.
“I didn't make that.”
Daniel clicked it.
Mara appeared on screen.
Her face was bruised.
She was sitting in an unknown room.
She spoke directly to the camera.
“My name is Mara Vale.”
Daniel looked at the real Mara.
“You have to understand,” the recording said, “I did not steal the trust money.”
The real Mara shook her head.
“I've never seen this.”
The video continued.
“I moved it under orders.”
“Whose orders?”
The recorded Mara looked terrified.
Then whispered,
“Victor Hale.”
Silence.
Victor went rigid.
“That isn't me.”
Daniel turned to him.
The recording continued.
“He told me Eleanor would lose everything if I didn't cooperate.”
Victor lunged toward the laptop.
Daniel pushed him back.
“What did you do?”
Victor's expression changed.
The calm lawyer disappeared.
For one second, Daniel saw something frightening behind his eyes.
Then Victor smiled.
“You really should have listened to me when I told you to leave this house.”
He reached into his coat.
Daniel reacted instantly.
He shoved Sophie behind him.
Mara grabbed Victor's wrist.
The gun fired.
The bullet struck the clock.
Glass exploded across the room.
Everyone froze.
Victor stared at the weapon in his hand.
Then another sound came from the hallway.
Police sirens.
Victor looked stunned.
Daniel stared at Mara.
“You called them?”
Mara nodded.
“I called before we came upstairs.”
Daniel looked at the shattered clock.
A tiny memory card had fallen from inside the broken mechanism.
Sophie picked it up.
“Daddy.”
Daniel took it.
On the label were four words.
FOR SOPHIE. WHEN SAFE.

Then the lights went out again.
And in the darkness, Victor laughed.
