Chapter 10 - Samuel's ReturnDaniel called the police again.

They searched every floor.

Nothing.

No man.

No hidden exit.

No footprints beyond the basement.

But one detective discovered a strange detail.

The footprint belonged to a shoe size common in the 1980s.

Old-fashioned leather sole.

Daniel remembered his brother's favorite shoes.

Black leather.

Hard sole.

A ridiculous coincidence.

Or proof.

The next morning, Daniel received an envelope.

No stamp.

No address.

Inside was a photograph.

A man stood outside a train station.

Older.

Gray hair.

Scar along his jaw.

Daniel recognized him immediately.

Samuel.

On the back of the photo was a handwritten sentence.

Stop looking for the money. Find the person who owns the name.

Daniel showed Mara.

She sat down.

“That's him.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he had that scar before he disappeared.”

Victor, from police custody, had refused to speak.

Richard had disappeared from his holding cell during a transfer.

Thomas remained missing.

And somewhere in the middle of it all, Samuel was alive.

Daniel returned to the hidden room.

The family tree was still on the wall.

He studied the names.

Then he noticed something.

The names Eleanor and Lillian were connected by a red line.

Underneath was a date.

1979.

The year Daniel's parents supposedly married.

Daniel pulled another folder from the cabinet.

Inside was a marriage certificate.

The names were scratched out.

Only the signatures remained.

One belonged to Nathan Vale.

The other did not match Eleanor's signature.

It matched Lillian's.

Daniel sat down.

“Mom wasn't Eleanor.”

Mara whispered,

“She was Lillian.”

“And she married Dad under Eleanor's name.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Mara pulled out another letter.

Because this one answered the question.

Nathan discovered that Eleanor had been stealing from the family business before the trust existed. Lillian exposed her. Nathan promised to protect Lillian. They changed identities after Eleanor threatened to destroy them both.

Daniel read it twice.

Then a second page.

But Eleanor did not disappear. She made an arrangement with Thomas.

Daniel looked at Mara.

“What arrangement?”

“She sold information.”

“What information?”

“The family's assets.”

Daniel's mind raced.

The trust theft had begun long before Eleanor's death.

The person he had known as his mother might actually have been Lillian.

And the woman buried two weeks ago might have been someone else entirely.

Then Sophie entered the room.

She held a small red envelope.

“Daddy.”

“Where did you get that?”

“Under my pillow.”

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a note.

You found the wrong mother.

Daniel turned pale.

Another line appeared below.

The woman buried at the funeral was Eleanor.

Mara gasped.

Daniel read the final sentence.

Your mother is alive because she never died.

Then something fell from the envelope.

A hospital bracelet.

The name printed on it was:

LILLIAN VALE.

Daniel stared.

The admission date was three days after Eleanor's funeral.

And the hospital was only six miles away.
