Chapter 15 - The Person Beside HimThree hours later, Daniel stood inside the ruins of the airstrip.

No plane.
No doctor.
No Lily.
No Vanessa.
Evan was unconscious in an ambulance.
Police surrounded the property.
The Echo files had spread across the internet.
Governments were responding.
News channels were broadcasting the leaked documents.
But Daniel heard none of it.
His daughter was gone.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Daniel answered.
“Where is my daughter?”
A woman's voice replied.
“She is safe.”
“Who are you?”
“You've known me for years.”
Daniel froze.
The voice belonged to Lily's doctor.
“What do you want?”
“The final archive.”
“I don't have it.”
“You do.”
“What archive?”
“The one your father hid inside the family memory.”
Daniel remembered the old house.
His grandfather's clock.
The red room.
The drawings.
The photographs.
Then he understood.
The archive wasn't on a server.
It had been encoded into the family itself.
That was why they needed him.
Why they needed Adrian.
Why they needed Lily.
The three generations were not keys to Echo.
They were the archive.
The phone voice continued.
“Your grandfather built the system. Your father tried to destroy it. Adrian survived it. And you inherited the memory structure.”
“What about Lily?”
“She completed it.”
Daniel's heart pounded.
“Where is she?”
“Come alone.”
“To where?”
“The house.”
Daniel looked at the ruins around him.
“My house?”
“Yes.”
He returned to the Stellan residence.
The front door opened automatically.
Inside, everything was untouched.
Birthday decorations still hung from the walls.
A paper banner reading HAPPY BIRTHDAY LILY swayed gently in the hallway.
Daniel walked upstairs.
His daughter's bedroom door was open.
Her stuffed rabbit sat on the bed.
Beside it was one final drawing.
A house.
Three people.
A fourth figure standing outside.
Daniel picked it up.
On the back was handwriting.
Not Lily's.
LOOK BEHIND THE CLOCK.
Daniel returned downstairs.
The grandfather clock was still running backward.
He removed the panel.
Inside was a hidden recording.
Richard appeared.
His face was bruised.
But alive.
“Daniel.”
Daniel's eyes widened.
“Dad.”
“If you're watching this, then the archive is already exposed.”
Richard paused.
“There is one thing I never told you.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“You were not my only son.”
Daniel looked confused.
“I know about Adrian.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
Daniel went still.
“There is another.”
The recording continued.
“Your mother was pregnant with triplets.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
“Two survived.”
A pause.
“One was taken.”
Daniel looked toward the stairs.
Lily.
His daughter.
Richard's voice became faint.
“She was not born three years ago.”
Daniel's hands trembled.
“She was placed with you.”
“What?”
“To complete the family archive.”
Daniel stumbled backward.
The entire story collapsed again.
Vanessa had not married him solely to find the vault.
She had married him because she knew about the missing child.
Adrian had been kept alive because he was one key.
Daniel was another.
And Lily was the missing third.
But that meant someone else had arranged her birth.
Someone else had placed her into Daniel's life.
The phone rang again.
Daniel answered.
The doctor laughed.
“Now you know.”
Daniel's voice shook.
“Who is Lily?”
“She is the Stellan heir.”
“My daughter?”
“She is your daughter.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“But she is also the final archive.”
“Where is she?”
“Come to the old hospital.”
Daniel looked at the recording.
Richard's final message appeared.
TRUST NO ONE WHO TELLS YOU THE TRUTH TOO EASILY.
Daniel headed for the door.
Then stopped.
Vanessa stood behind him.
Alive.
Bruised.
Holding Lily.
Daniel stared.
“How?”
Vanessa smiled through tears.
“She was never on the plane.”
Daniel rushed forward and grabbed Lily.
She wrapped both arms around his neck.
“Daddy.”
Daniel held her tightly.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“Everything?”
“No.”
“Then what don't you know?”
Vanessa looked toward the clock.
“The person controlling all of this.”
Daniel frowned.
“The doctor?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“Elias?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Vanessa's eyes filled with fear.
“Your father.”
Daniel turned toward the recording.
Richard's face was still frozen on the screen.
Then the screen flickered.
The recording changed.
Richard looked directly into the camera.
But his expression was different now.
Cold.
Calculated.
And behind him stood the doctor.
Daniel stepped backward.
Richard smiled.
“Congratulations, Daniel.”
Daniel's blood ran cold.
“You finally found the truth.”
The doctor walked beside him.
“And now,” Richard continued, “you are ready to hear the real one.”
The screen went black.
Then a final message appeared.
ECHO PHASE TWO: ACTIVATED.
Daniel looked down at Lily.
She whispered:
“Daddy, why does Grandpa keep calling me by Mom's name?”
Daniel stared at her.
His entire face went white.
Because Daniel had never told Lily what her mother's real name was.
And Vanessa was standing right beside him.
For the first time that night, Vanessa looked genuinely terrified.
She whispered:
“Daniel…”
“What?”
“That's not Lily.”
The child in his arms slowly lifted her head.
She smiled.
But the smile wasn't Lily's.
Then she spoke in a woman's voice.
May you like
“Hello, Daniel.”
And somewhere inside the house, the locked basement door opened by itself.
