Chapter 10 - The Vault Beneath the DeadDaniel woke in complete darkness.

His head throbbed.

Lily was crying beside him.

He pulled her close.

“I'm here.”

A flashlight clicked on.

Evan.

“You're alive.”

“Where's Vanessa?”

“Above us.”

“Adrian?”

“Gone.”

Daniel looked around.

They were standing in an underground chamber.

Ancient concrete walls.

Metal doors.

A narrow staircase leading deeper.

“This isn't part of the facility.”

“No,” Evan said.

Daniel looked at Lily.

She was staring at the far wall.

“Daddy.”

“What?”

She pointed.

“There.”

A small symbol had been carved into the concrete.

The same symbol as the brass token.

Evan touched it.

The wall unlocked.

A hidden panel opened.

Inside was another recording.

Richard appeared.

“Daniel, if you've reached the second vault, then Adrian has failed.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

“Because he believes Echo is a weapon.”

Richard shook his head.

“It isn't.”

The recording changed.

An old laboratory appeared.

Researchers stood around a large machine.

A young Elias Stellan stood beside them.

Richard's father.

The machine displayed thousands of names.

Financial transactions.

Government accounts.

Private identities.

Daniel realized what it was.

“A database.”

Richard nodded.

“Echo was originally designed to expose corruption. A system that could identify hidden connections between people, companies, and institutions.”

Daniel stared.

“So why the genetic key?”

“Because Elias learned that data could be stolen.”

The recording showed Elias placing DNA samples into a machine.

“He created a biological lock.”

Daniel looked at Lily.

“Only family DNA could unlock it.”

Richard continued.

“Orpheus wanted control of Echo.”

“What did they want the system to do?”

“Erase evidence.”

Daniel looked at the endless files.

“All of this?”

“Yes.”

A second voice came from behind them.

“My father wanted the world clean.”

Daniel spun.

Adrian stood in the doorway.

A gun in his hand.

Daniel moved in front of Lily.

Adrian looked at him.

“You still don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

“I grew up inside this system.”

“You were tortured.”

“I was trained.”

“You were a child.”

“I became useful.”

His expression softened when he looked at Lily.

“She reminds me of who I was.”

Daniel stared.

“Then help me get her out.”

Adrian shook his head.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because Orpheus already has the activation sequence.”

“What sequence?”

Adrian pointed at Lily.

“Her voice.”

Daniel went cold.

“They designed it to respond to the original family cadence.”

“You need Lily to activate Echo.”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

“Then Orpheus gains access.”

“Who controls Orpheus?”

Adrian lowered the gun.

“I don't know.”

Daniel stared.

“You're afraid of them.”

Adrian laughed quietly.

“No.”

He looked at the ceiling.

“They're afraid of someone else.”

Daniel frowned.

“Who?”

Adrian turned.

Before answering, a gunshot exploded.

Adrian jerked backward.

Blood spread across his chest.

Daniel caught him.

“Adrian!”

Adrian grabbed Daniel's coat.

“It's not Orpheus.”

“What?”

“The person controlling everything…”

His eyes moved toward Lily.

“…is inside your family.”

Adrian collapsed.

Daniel looked into the dark corridor.

A figure stood at the far end.

The silhouette raised a gun.

Then the lights came on.

May you like

Daniel saw the face.

Vanessa.
