Chapter 9 - THE LETTERJulian read the letter three times.

He still couldn't understand it.
A newborn was not a key.
He was a lock.
The phrase repeated in his mind.
Elena stood beside him.
“What does that mean?”
Julian looked at Daniel's photograph on the monitor.
“We find Adrian.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“We find my son.”
Julian nodded.
Rebecca checked her weapon.
“Chloe has the building locked down.”
Adrian's voice crackled through a hidden speaker.
“Not for long.”
Julian looked around.
“Where are you?”
“Beneath you.”
Julian found a floor hatch.
Opened it.
A metal ladder descended.
They climbed.
The passage ended at a massive vault.
A circular steel door occupied the entire wall.
In the center was a small indentation shaped like a baby's hand.
Julian stared.
“No.”
Daniel's symbol.
“The lock.”
Elena's voice shook.
“Where's Adrian?”
A voice came from behind them.
“Here.”
They turned.
Adrian stood in the darkness.
Daniel was in his arms.
Elena stepped forward.
“Give me my baby.”
Adrian didn't move.
Julian raised his gun.
“Now.”
Adrian looked at him.
“If I wanted to hurt him, you would already be dead.”
“Give him to her.”
Adrian slowly handed Daniel to Elena.
She pulled him against her chest.
Julian kept his gun trained on Adrian.
“Explain.”
Adrian pointed at the vault.
“This is what they wanted.”
“The archive?”
“Yes.”
“What is inside?”
“Everything.”
“Stop talking like a prophet.”
Adrian smiled.
“Fine.”
He pulled a thin device from his pocket.
“Your grandfather created an intelligence archive containing the identities, payments, crimes, and blackmail material of everyone involved in Sterling's rise.”
Julian looked at the vault.
“And the baby opens it.”
“No.”
Adrian shook his head.
“The baby allows the vault to recognize you.”
Julian frowned.
“Me?”
“You're the key.”
Elena looked at Julian.
“But you said the baby was the key.”
“They made us believe that.”
“Why?”
“Because they needed Julian to bring him here.”
Julian finally understood.
“My father.”
Adrian nodded.
“Daniel knew.”
Julian stared at his brother.
“Then why did he allow it?”
“Because the vault doesn't open for blood alone.”
“What does it need?”
Adrian looked at Elena.
“Choice.”
Julian frowned.
“What choice?”
“Your grandfather designed the system to open only when a Sterling heir willingly sacrifices something.”
Julian looked at the vault.
“What?”
“Everything.”
Suddenly, the room filled with a low mechanical hum.
The vault recognized them.
A screen appeared.
STERLING DESCENDANT DETECTED.
Then:
EMOTIONAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
Julian's breath caught.
A voice came through the speaker.
His father's.
“Julian.”
He turned.
Daniel Sterling appeared on the screen.
Older.
Wounded.
But alive.
“You have one choice.”
Julian stepped closer.
“What choice?”
“Open the vault and destroy your family.”
Julian waited.
“Or leave it closed and let them destroy your son.”
The screen changed.
A timer appeared.
10:00
Elena stared.
“What happens when it reaches zero?”
Daniel answered:
“Chloe starts the extraction.”
Julian's face hardened.
“No.”
He stepped toward the vault.
“Open it.”
Adrian grabbed him.
“You don't know what you're releasing.”
“I don't care.”
“You should.”
Julian pushed him away.
“I lost my wife.”
Elena looked at him.
“I lost my home.”
He touched Daniel's head.
“I just found my son.”
His voice became cold.
“And I am not losing him.”
He placed his hand inside the scanner.
Nothing happened.
The system flashed red.
EMOTIONAL AUTHORIZATION FAILED.
Julian froze.
Adrian whispered:
“You have to sacrifice something.”
“What?”
“Something you love.”
Julian looked at Elena.
She immediately shook her head.
“No.”
He looked at the ring on his finger.
His wedding ring.
The one he had planned to put on Chloe's hand.
He removed it.
Dropped it into the scanner.
Nothing.
He looked at Elena.
Then his son.
Then the vault.
“What else?”
Adrian whispered:
“Your name.”
Julian stared.
“What?”
“Your legal identity.”
Julian understood.
The Sterling name.
His inheritance.
His company.
His fortune.
Everything.
The system displayed:
SACRIFICE REQUIREMENT: STERLING HEIR
Julian took a breath.
Then spoke.
“I renounce Sterling Holdings.”
The lights flickered.
He continued.
“I renounce the family fortune.”
The machine hummed.
“I renounce the Sterling name.”
The vault unlocked.
One enormous mechanism moved.
The steel door opened.
Cold air rushed over them.
And inside was not money.
Not gold.
Not documents.
A woman sat chained to a chair.
Julian stared.
He knew her.
Elena gasped.
“My God.”
The woman lifted her head.
She was older.
Bruised.
But alive.
Julian's voice disappeared.
“Who is that?”
Adrian looked at him.
“Your mother.”
Julian turned.
Margaret was standing behind them.
But the woman in the chair was also Margaret.
Two mothers.
May you like
Two identical faces.
And one of them was smiling.
