Chapter 7 - STERLING TOWERSterling Tower rose above Manhattan like a black knife against the snow.

Julian stared through the windshield.
For twenty years, it had represented everything his family had built.
Now it felt like a tomb.
Daniel sat beside him.
Margaret was in the back.
Elena held Daniel.
Rebecca had survived the tunnel, but blood soaked her sleeve.
“There are seventeen floors,” Julian said.
“Forty-two,” Daniel corrected.
Julian looked at him.
“The public building has seventeen.”
Daniel pointed upward.
“The real tower is underground.”
Elena's eyes narrowed.
“How?”
“Private elevator.”
Julian frowned.
“I have worked there every day for ten years.”
“And you never knew.”
“That was the point.”
They entered through an abandoned parking structure.
Julian used an old access card.
The doors opened.
Nobody spoke.
The underground elevator descended.
Ten floors.
Twenty.
Thirty.
The number continued.
Then the elevator stopped at B42.
The doors opened.
A corridor stretched ahead.
White walls.
White lights.
No windows.
Every door had a number.
A child’s drawing hung on one wall.
A house.
Three people.
A sun.
Julian approached.
At the bottom was written:
ADRIAN, AGE 11.
His chest tightened.
“He was here.”
Daniel nodded.
“What did they do to him?”
“Tests.”
“What kind?”
“Memory. Blood. Fear response.”
Julian turned.
“Why?”
“Because your grandfather believed trauma could activate genetic traits.”
Elena held Daniel closer.
“This is where he was born.”
Julian looked at her.
“No.”
Daniel walked to a door.
He touched the glass.
“This is where Adrian was trained.”
The door opened.
Inside was a chair.
Straps.
Medical equipment.
A mirror.
Julian stared.
Then he saw the wall.
Thousands of handwritten lines.
Dates.
Names.
Numbers.
At the center:
SUBJECT A-01
Julian whispered:
“Adrian.”
A voice came from the darkness.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
A man stepped into the light.
Late thirties.
Scar across his jaw.
Cold eyes.
Adrian.
Margaret began crying.
“Adrian.”
He looked at her.
“You still say my name like I died.”
Julian stepped forward.
“I'm your brother.”
Adrian smiled.
“I know.”
“How long have you been here?”
“Fourteen years.”
“Why?”
“Because every time I escaped, they brought me back.”
“Who?”
Adrian looked toward Daniel.
“Your father.”
Julian turned.
“Dad?”
Daniel didn't deny it.
Julian's face twisted.
“You imprisoned him?”
“No.”
Adrian laughed.
“He did worse.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“I kept you alive.”
“You kept me useful.”
“Elijah…”
“Don't call me that.”
Adrian looked at Elena.
Then Daniel.
Then Julian.
“You have no idea what they want from your son.”
“Tell me.”
Adrian looked at the baby.
“Your grandfather's project failed.”
“Why?”
“Because the genetic key couldn't survive.”
Julian frowned.
“Until Daniel?”
“Until him.”
Adrian smiled.
“Your son is the first successful carrier.”
Elena stepped back.
“Carrier of what?”
“Access.”
“To what?”
Adrian looked at Julian.
“To the Sterling Vault.”
Julian blinked.
“What vault?”
“The original family archive.”
Adrian pointed toward the floor.
“Everything your grandfather stole.”
“Where?”
“Below us.”
Julian's stomach tightened.
“How do we open it?”
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“With blood.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Adrian's eyes darkened.
“You knew.”
“I didn't know he was born.”
“But you knew the vault required a Sterling descendant.”
Daniel said nothing.
Julian turned to his father.
“You brought us here because you need my son.”
“No.”
Adrian's voice was cold.
“They brought us here.”
Suddenly, the corridor lights changed.
Red.
A woman's voice came through the speakers.
“Family reunions are so touching.”
Chloe.
Julian looked upward.
Adrian reached for a weapon.
“She's inside.”
The elevator doors opened behind them.
Chloe stepped out.
She wore the wedding dress Julian had abandoned.
Blood was splattered across the hem.
In one hand, she held a pistol.
In the other, a piece of paper.
She looked at Julian.
“You should have married me.”
Julian stared.
“Why?”
Chloe smiled.
“Because then I would have had legal access to your son.”
Elena's face hardened.
“You're not getting him.”
Chloe lifted the paper.
“Actually…”
She smiled.
“I already did.”
Everyone looked at Elena.
May you like
She froze.
The baby was gone.
