Chapter 5 - DANIEL MILLERThomas couldn't speak.

His grandfather stood six feet away.

Older.

Thinner.

Gray-haired.

But unmistakably the same man from the photograph.

The man Thomas's family had buried in memory.

The man who had supposedly died thirty-one years ago.

Thomas tightened his grip around Sarah.

"You."

Daniel nodded.

"I know."

"You were dead."

"No."

"Your grave?"

"Fake."

"My mother said..."

"Your mother didn't know where I was."

Thomas's voice broke.

"Why?"

Daniel looked toward Evelyn.

"Because of her father."

Evelyn stepped forward.

"My father tried to kill you."

Daniel smiled bitterly.

"He tried to kill everyone."

Thomas shook his head.

"Why did you disappear?"

"Because I found Black Crown."

"You were part of it."

"I was assigned to protect Richard Croft."

"Then why betray him?"

"I didn't."

Daniel looked at Thomas.

"I betrayed the system."

He sat down.

"Thirty-one years ago, Richard discovered a way to manipulate corporate ownership through shell trusts. He built something bigger than a company."

"Black Crown."

Daniel nodded.

"It wasn't designed to make money."

Thomas waited.

"It was designed to control people."

Politicians.

Banks.

Judges.

Media companies.

Private security firms.

Every institution that could protect a wealthy man's interests.

Richard Croft built leverage.

Julian Cross inherited it.

And Evelyn was born into it.

"I tried to destroy it," Daniel said.

"What happened?"

"I failed."

He looked toward Evelyn.

"Your father threatened your mother."

Evelyn's face changed.

"My mother?"

"She tried to expose him."

"What happened to her?"

Daniel looked away.

"Car accident."

Evelyn's eyes hardened.

"That's what I was told."

"It wasn't."

Silence.

Thomas looked between them.

"Rebecca."

Daniel nodded.

"Rebecca found me five years ago."

Thomas felt his throat tighten.

"She knew you were alive?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't she tell me?"

"Because she was afraid you'd be killed."

"What did she find?"

Daniel's expression darkened.

"The Legacy Project."

Thomas remembered the files.

"What is it?"

Daniel stood.

"Something Richard started near the end of his life."

He opened a briefcase.

Inside were records.

Children.

Families.

DNA studies.

Financial profiles.

Behavioral evaluations.

Thomas saw his own name.

Sarah's.

He couldn't breathe.

Daniel pointed to a paragraph.

"Richard believed certain family lines produced people with specific traits."

"What traits?"

"Memory. Resistance to pressure. Pattern recognition. Loyalty."

Thomas almost laughed.

"You've got to be kidding."

"I wish."

Daniel opened a second file.

"Your grandfather was selected."

He opened a third.

"Your father was monitored."

Fourth.

"Your mother."

Fifth.

"Rebecca."

Thomas stepped back.

"You're saying my entire family was watched?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Richard believed your family possessed something he called the Miller Pattern."

Thomas shook his head.

"This is insane."

Evelyn spoke quietly.

"It explains why they kept you close."

Thomas turned.

"Who?"

"Black Crown."

She opened another document.

It showed Apex employee records.

Thomas had been hired through a subcontractor six years ago.

But his application had been flagged.

DO NOT REMOVE.

He stared.

"I didn't get this job by accident."

"No."

Evelyn looked at him.

"You were placed here."

Thomas felt betrayed by his entire life.

His career.

His apartment.

His workplace.

Maybe even the night shifts.

"Who placed me?"

Daniel answered.

"Julian Cross."

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

"Then why did you ask me to work for you?"

"Because I discovered the file."

"And?"

"I realized you were being positioned as a disposable asset."

Thomas clenched his fists.

"What does Black Crown want from me?"

Daniel looked at Sarah.

Her small face was pale.

"They want something your wife hid."

"What?"

"She didn't tell me."

Daniel walked toward Sarah.

"Your mother left something with you."

Thomas frowned.

"She never gave me anything."

Daniel looked at Sarah's backpack.

Thomas followed his eyes.

He opened it.

Inside was Sarah's drawing from school.

Two stick figures.

A yellow sun.

A red heart.

Thomas stared.

"That's nothing."

Daniel took the paper.

He held it against the light.

A faint pattern appeared beneath the ink.

A map.

Thomas's mouth fell open.

Rebecca had hidden a map inside Sarah's drawing.

Evelyn moved closer.

"This is an access code."

Daniel nodded.

"To the original Black Crown archive."

Thomas stared at the drawing.

"Where?"

Daniel pointed to the map.

"Under Apex Holdings."

Another alarm sounded.

Everyone froze.

Daniel's expression changed.

"We need to move."

Evelyn reached for her phone.

"Security?"

No answer.

She tried again.

Nothing.

Daniel whispered:

"Nobody came."

Thomas heard footsteps outside.

Slow.

Measured.

Approaching.

The lights went out.

Sarah grabbed Thomas's hand.

"Daddy."

Thomas pulled her close.

A voice came from the hallway.

Calm.

Almost friendly.

"Mr. Miller."

Thomas recognized it.

Julian Cross.

The billionaire CFO.

"Bring me the drawing."

Thomas stared into the darkness.

Julian spoke again.

"And I'll let your daughter live."

Evelyn raised her weapon.

Daniel shook his head.

"Don't."

Thomas whispered:

"Why?"

Daniel answered:

"Because Julian isn't alone."

A second voice spoke from behind them.

Female.

Soft.

Familiar.

Thomas turned.

And froze.

May you like

Rebecca's voice whispered:

"Thomas."
