Chapter 10 - THE LAST DOORThe darkness lasted twelve seconds.

It felt like twelve years.

Emergency lights flickered on.

Thomas held Sarah tightly.

Evelyn stood beside him.

Rebecca looked toward the corridor.

Daniel whispered:

"She's here."

Thomas looked at him.

"Who?"

Emily.

The lost daughter.

The seventh subject.

The child Black Crown had hidden.

A sound echoed above them.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

One floor at a time.

Someone was descending.

Evelyn raised her weapon.

"Emily."

No answer.

The footsteps stopped.

A young woman appeared at the top of the stairs.

Sixteen years old.

Dark hair.

Pale skin.

Evelyn stared at her.

Neither spoke.

Then the girl said:

"Mother."

Evelyn lowered the weapon.

Her face broke.

"Emily."

The girl walked down.

She did not look afraid.

She looked angry.

"You left me."

Evelyn shook her head.

"I thought you were dead."

"They told you that."

"I searched."

"Not hard enough."

Evelyn began crying.

Emily looked at Thomas.

"You're Thomas."

"Yes."

"You're the one who raised Sarah."

Thomas nodded.

Emily looked at Sarah.

"We are sisters."

Sarah stared at her.

"Are you bad?"

Emily almost smiled.

"No."

"Are you scared?"

A pause.

"Always."

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

"Why is she here?"

Emily answered.

"Because Black Crown is ending."

David walked into the room.

His shoulder was bandaged.

Thomas turned.

"You."

David nodded.

"It's time."

Thomas looked around.

"Time for what?"

David walked to the center of the archive.

"For the truth to become public."

He held a data drive.

"Everything is here."

Black Crown.

The financial records.

The murders.

The experiments.

The political connections.

The names.

Thomas stared.

"Why didn't you release it?"

"Because the system was protected."

"Then why now?"

"Because you opened the vault."

Thomas understood.

The Miller Pattern was not a genetic superpower.

It was something simpler.

The ability to recognize patterns.

To connect information other people missed.

Thomas had done it his entire life.

He noticed the missing battery.

The wrong button.

The hidden door.

The contradictions.

His family didn't possess supernatural abilities.

They possessed a mind built for connections.

Black Crown had spent decades exploiting that trait.

David said:

"Your grandfather built the original archive."

Daniel nodded.

"Your mother protected it."

Rebecca stepped forward.

"I copied it."

"Evelyn?" Thomas asked.

She looked at him.

"I spent years trying to destroy it."

Julian had taken control.

But Julian wasn't finished.

A gunshot echoed.

David collapsed.

Emily screamed.

Julian appeared on the balcony.

He pointed his weapon at Evelyn.

"You should have stayed invisible."

Thomas looked up.

Julian smiled.

"You were always the problem."

Thomas saw the gun.

Then the emergency lights.

Then the sprinkler system.

Then the old security panel.

The same kind of pattern his mind had recognized all night.

He understood.

The fire suppression system was connected to the archive locks.

He ran to the panel.

Julian fired.

The bullet grazed Thomas's shoulder.

Sarah screamed.

Thomas pulled the lever.

Water exploded from the ceiling.

The electric panel sparked.

The security doors slammed shut.

Julian was trapped on the balcony.

Evelyn moved.

One shot.

Julian dropped his weapon.

Security officers stormed the room.

For once, Black Crown had nowhere left to hide.

Julian was arrested.

The files were released.

Politicians resigned.

Corporate executives disappeared.

Investigations spread across the country.

Apex Holdings collapsed in three days.

The world finally learned what Evelyn Croft had been fighting.

And Thomas Miller became the witness everyone wanted.

For the first time in his life, he was no longer invisible.

But the story wasn't over.

Six months later, Thomas stood outside a new building.

A modest office.

No marble.

No billionaire logos.

No private elevators.

Sarah was beside him.

Evelyn stood on the other side.

Rebecca was inside.

Daniel sat near the window.

Emily was doing homework.

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

"You really want to do this?"

She nodded.

"I promised."

"What?"

"No more secrets."

The new company was small.

A foundation.

It helped people who had been manipulated by powerful institutions.

Evelyn gave away most of her remaining fortune.

Rebecca testified.

Daniel disappeared from public life.

Emily went to school.

Sarah finally had a normal childhood.

And Thomas?

He stopped cleaning offices.

He became the foundation's head of investigations.

He still limped because his knee hurt.

He still forgot to buy milk.

He still checked his bank account too often.

But he wasn't invisible anymore.

One evening, Sarah ran into his office.

"Daddy."

Thomas smiled.

"What?"

"I found something."

She handed him a small envelope.

His smile disappeared.

There was no return address.

Only a black crown.

Thomas opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Seven children stood together.

He recognized six.

Sarah.

Emily.

And the other four subjects.

But there was one child in the middle he had never seen.

A boy.

Age about eight.

Underneath the photograph was a sentence.

Subject Eight survived.

Thomas turned the picture over.

Another message was written on the back.

Black Crown was only one branch.

Below it:

The Miller family was never the target.

Thomas's blood ran cold.

The final line was written in Rebecca's handwriting.

You were the target, Thomas.

He looked toward the hallway.

Evelyn stood there.

She had seen his face.

"What happened?"

Thomas handed her the photograph.

She read it.

Her expression changed.

"Where did this come from?"

"We need Rebecca."

They ran toward the archive room.

The door was open.

Rebecca was gone.

On the desk was another black crown button.

And beside it, a note.

Thomas picked it up.

His hands shook.

He read the words aloud.

"Thomas..."

Evelyn stared at him.

"What?"

He looked at her.

"The note says the last door is still closed."

"Where?"

Thomas looked toward the basement.

Then toward the old elevator.

His heart began pounding.

A symbol appeared on the elevator panel.

Not nine.

Not eight.

Not any number he recognized.

A black crown.

Thomas touched it.

The elevator doors opened.

A light came on below.

And from somewhere in the darkness, Rebecca's voice whispered:

"Thomas."

He froze.

Then another voice spoke.

A man's voice.

Deep.

Calm.

Familiar.

His father's.

"You finally understand."

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

Then at Sarah.

Then into the elevator.

The doors remained open.

Waiting.

Because beneath the world everyone knew was another world.

And this time, Thomas Miller wasn't being invited inside.

May you like

He was being summoned.

THE END... OR THE BEGINNING OF SOMETHING MUCH WORSE.
