Chapter 14 - Clara could barely breathe."My father."

Adrian stared at the speaker.

"Who is this?"

The voice answered:

"Someone you've all been searching for."

Daniel whispered:

"Gabriel Reyes."

Clara stepped closer.

"Dad?"

Silence.

Then:

"Yes."

Tears filled her eyes.

"You're alive."

"For now."

"Where are you?"

"Vault seven."

Adrian looked at Daniel.

"Can we reach him?"

Daniel nodded.

"There's a route."

"Then we're going."

Elias stopped them.

"No."

Adrian turned.

"Why?"

"Because he wants you to."

"What?"

Elias looked toward the speaker.

"Gabriel has the archive."

Clara shook her head.

"Why would he..."

"He needs you."

"For what?"

Elias stared at her.

"To unlock it."

The truth landed slowly.

Clara was not just another subject.

She was the key.

Adrian looked at the access chip.

"That's why they kept her alive."

Daniel nodded.

"And why they erased her memory."

Clara whispered:

"What happens if I refuse?"

Elias answered:

"Everyone dies."

The building shook again.

Emma cried.

Olivia looked at Adrian.

"We don't have time."

They entered the final tunnel.

It descended deeper than anything Adrian had seen.

The walls changed from concrete to steel.

Then stone.

Then ancient brick.

At the bottom stood a massive vault door.

Seven was carved into it.

Clara approached.

A scanner lit up.

"Place your hand."

She did.

The machine scanned her.

ACCESS GRANTED.

The door opened.

Inside was a massive archive.

Thousands of files.

Hard drives.

Medical records.

Photographs.

Research journals.

And in the center...

A man sat in a wheelchair.

Older.

Weak.

But alive.

Clara stopped.

"Dad."

Gabriel Reyes looked at her.

Tears filled his eyes.

"My little girl."

Clara ran toward him.

He embraced her.

Adrian stood back.

Something about the scene felt wrong.

Daniel noticed too.

"Where is the security team?"

Gabriel looked at him.

"Dead."

"Who killed them?"

Gabriel didn't answer.

Adrian stepped forward.

"Why did you call us here?"

Gabriel looked at Emma.

"Because she's the only one who can survive what comes next."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Explain."

Gabriel pointed toward a sealed chamber.

"Inside is the master treatment."

"The cure?"

"The beginning."

Adrian frowned.

"Beginning of what?"

Gabriel's eyes moved toward Olivia.

"Evolution."

Olivia recoiled.

"No."

Gabriel nodded.

"Your grandfather believed humans could be redesigned."

"And he succeeded?"

"Partially."

"What's the price?"

Gabriel looked at Clara.

"Your memories."

Clara stared.

"My memories?"

"You weren't just tested."

"You were the archive."

Adrian frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Gabriel explained:

"Every experimental procedure was encoded into your nervous system."

Adrian stared.

"Like a biological hard drive."

Gabriel nodded.

"Your brain stored information even after the memory suppression."

Clara looked horrified.

"They used me to hide the research."

"Yes."

Adrian looked toward the door.

"And Emma?"

"Emma can decode it."

"What about Olivia?"

Gabriel looked at her.

"She can control it."

Silence.

Clara stared at Adrian.

"So all three of us..."

"Are pieces of one experiment."

Suddenly the vault doors slammed shut.

Gabriel looked terrified.

"He's here."

Adrian raised his weapon.

"Who?"

Gabriel whispered:

"Elias."

The lights came on.

Elias stood on the other side of the glass.

Victor beside him.

And behind them were dozens of armed men.

Elias smiled.

"You finally opened the vault."

Adrian moved toward the door.

"You're not taking them."

Elias laughed.

"No."

He looked at Gabriel.

"I'm taking everything."

Then Victor raised a remote.

The vault began filling with gas.

Olivia covered her mouth.

Clara grabbed Emma.

Daniel shouted:

"Find the emergency oxygen!"

Adrian searched.

Nothing.

Gabriel wheeled himself toward the central computer.

"There is one way."

"What?"

"Complete the experiment."

Adrian stared.

"No."

Gabriel looked at Emma.

"Without it, we all die."

"What experiment?"

Gabriel pointed toward a machine.

"Emma must enter."

Adrian's face turned white.

"Absolutely not."

Gabriel whispered:

"Then your daughter will never survive the night."

May you like

Outside the vault, Elias smiled.

And started the countdown.
