Chapter 1 - Adrian stepped inside the house and froze. The first thing he heard was his daughter's scream.

Not the soft, irritated cry Emma usually made when she wanted milk.
This was different.
It was sharp.
Terrified.
It echoed through the marble foyer and seemed to stop Adrian's heart for one brutal second.
He dropped his keys.
"Emma?"
His eyes snapped toward the staircase.
Emma's white stroller was sitting less than a foot from the top step.
One wheel was already angled toward the edge.
The infant was screaming inside it.
Clara stood beside the stroller with her arms wrapped around Emma.
Her body was turned protectively between the baby and the staircase.
Vanessa stood several feet away.
Crying.
Not quietly.
She was sobbing so violently that her shoulders shook.
"Adrian!"
His wife pointed at Clara.
"She pushed the stroller!"
Adrian's mind went blank.
"What?"
"She pushed Emma!"
Vanessa's voice cracked.
"I saw her do it!"
Clara's face went pale.
"No."
She tightened her hold on Emma.
"Mr. Mercer, that's not what happened."
Vanessa rushed toward Adrian.
"She was standing behind the stroller. I came into the room and saw her shove it."
Adrian looked at Clara.
Then Emma.
Then the staircase.
His daughter's tiny hands were shaking.
He saw the red mark on her cheek from crying.
Something primal took control of him.
He crossed the room in seconds.
"Give me my daughter."
Clara immediately handed Emma over.
"I'm sorry. I tried to..."
Adrian barely heard her.
He pulled Emma against his chest.
Then turned.
"What did you do?"
Clara stared at him.
"I didn't push her."
"You were standing beside the stroller."
"I was trying to stop it."
Vanessa pointed at Clara again.
"She's lying!"
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"You've been around my daughter for weeks."
Clara took a step backward.
"And I've never hurt her."
"Then why was she beside the stairs?"
"I don't know."
Vanessa sobbed harder.
"Because she pushed her there!"
Clara's lips trembled.
"Please."
Adrian was furious.
Frightened.
Confused.
He saw only one thing.
His daughter had almost gone over the staircase.
He moved toward Clara.
"You could have killed her."
Clara raised her hands.
"Mr. Mercer, please listen to me."
"Don't."
"I didn't..."
Adrian struck her.
The sound echoed through the foyer.
Clara staggered sideways.
For several seconds nobody moved.
Emma cried against Adrian's chest.
Clara touched her cheek.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I was saving her."
Adrian's anger suddenly cracked.
But before he could say anything, a voice came from behind him.
"Dad."
Adrian turned.
Olivia was standing at the entrance.
His seventeen-year-old daughter held her phone in both hands.
Her expression was colder than he had ever seen it.
"Stop."
Adrian stared at her.
"What?"
Olivia walked toward the television.
"Watch this."
Vanessa's face changed.
Only for a fraction of a second.
But Olivia saw it.
So did Clara.
Olivia connected her phone to the giant television mounted above the fireplace.
The screen lit up.
A security camera angle appeared.
It showed the foyer.
Timestamped.
Twenty minutes earlier.
Vanessa was standing beside Emma's stroller.
Alone.
She looked toward the hallway.
Then toward the stairs.
Then she placed both hands on the stroller.
Adrian's face drained of color.
The footage continued.
Vanessa pushed.
Hard.
The stroller rolled toward the stairs.
Emma immediately began crying.
Clara entered the room from the opposite hallway.
She saw the stroller.
She ran.
She caught the handle just before the front wheel went over the edge.
She threw herself forward and grabbed Emma.
Then Vanessa turned.
She saw Clara holding the baby.
And deliberately collapsed onto the floor.
The video stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
She was no longer crying.
"Adrian..."
"Don't."
His voice was barely audible.
Vanessa swallowed.
"It wasn't what it looked like."
Adrian turned back toward the television.
"Play it again."
Olivia did.
Again.
Vanessa pushed the stroller.
Again.
Clara saved Emma.
Again.
Adrian watched every second.
His hands began to shake.
He looked at Clara.
The red imprint from his hand was visible on her cheek.
"You saved my daughter."
Clara looked down.
"I tried."
Adrian closed his eyes.
Then he heard something.
A tiny sound.
Emma.
She had stopped crying.
She was staring toward Vanessa.
Olivia noticed it too.
"Why would she do that?" Olivia whispered.
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
"I don't know."
Olivia stared at the screen.
"I think I do."
Adrian turned.
"What?"
Olivia's expression hardened.
"There was another camera."
Vanessa's face went white.
Adrian stepped toward his daughter.
"Another camera where?"
Olivia lifted her phone.
"The nursery."
Silence.
Then Vanessa whispered one word.
"No."
Olivia looked directly at her.
"Why not?"
Vanessa said nothing.
Olivia pressed play.
And on the screen, three hours earlier, Vanessa entered Emma's nursery carrying a small black case.
She locked the door behind her.
Adrian stared.
"What is that?"
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa reached inside the case.
And removed a tiny glass bottle.
Adrian's blood ran cold.
"What did you put in my daughter's room?"
Vanessa slowly backed away from the television.
"I can explain."
Adrian's voice became dangerously calm.
"You have thirty seconds."
Vanessa looked at him.
Then at the stairs.
Then at Emma.
And finally whispered:
"If you watch the rest of that video, Adrian, you'll understand why I had to do it."
Olivia pressed play.
May you like
The footage continued.
And Vanessa's secret became something far darker than anyone in the room had imagined.
